  1. I never really bothered with foxes, but this border/beardie x greyhound half cross , like 'birds' was mad for hunting foxes and cats. He was a big strong dog. He enjoyed what he did and had no problems doing it. I bought him about 16 years ago from Hancock, but i forgot the name of his sire.
  2. Got to admit, i do have quite high morals in that area. If i make the decision of buying/rescuing a dog, i see it as my responsibility to keep it until nature takes it course. If it doesn't make a worker thats tough luck on my behalf, the bond i have with my dog is more important. Luckily, i must have really low standards as i have always managed to find a use in every dog ive owned. All had there strengths and weaknesses. I think dog law with regard to ownership is weak and as such is abused.
  3. Lovely looking dog. There's a gwp/greyhound cross on rabbitingman 2 vid at the start, sound dog pulls off some real good catches. Love dogs that hunt up well.
  4. Just thought id post a couple of pics of the collies i used to work with, excuse the quality of the pics as i have taken digital photos of the old photos to get them uploaded. This was the male, he was a good rabbiting dog, obviously not the speed of a lurcher, but good ferreting and lamping dog, quite fast and powerfull. Great stamina. This was the bitch, she was a rescue collie that was just locked in a stable all day. The first time i took her out rabbiting with the other dogs she just put her nose down got a scent and the rest was history. She was most most natural hunting d
  5. My whippet was very slow to strike and tended to want to chase over catching. I found him much slower to learn the skill compared to the lurchers ive had, but when he did learn, my god he pulled off some spectacular catches. Many people would have got rid, expecting too much too soon, but mine are much loved pets as well as working dogs and i have found most will do a good job given time and regular opportunity.
  6. I whippet or little lurcher would both do the job, just depends on personal preference as to what you prefer. Some whippets and bed/whippets can make cracking little ratters, i like personally like a lurcher with a dash of collie in it.
  7. Was out working the border collies to some rabbits quite a few years ago when suddenly the male collie started barking withing a dense holly hedgerow. I managed to squeeze my head through to have a peak only to discover he was having a stand-off with a big frog. Couldn't stop laughing.
  8. Plenty of love and patience. Not all dogs do come round, my mums whippet doesn't like men....and nothing going to change that. Main thing is getting it ok with you and your family. How long have you owned it for? I took a rescue terrier in and all it did for the first 2 weeks was hide in a little gap between the kitchen units, eventually it came up to me on its own accord and from that day things progressed slowly but good. Lets face it, it acting like that around people for a reason (who knows what its been through). Like i said give it time, dont rush.....just be nice...plenty of wa
  9. Loved mine. Very nice temperament......was so laid back at home...nice dog to live with.... and the best hunt em up dog ive had....excellent strike.....not a hare dog, but had a passion for hunting foxes (something ive never bothered with).... i didnt realise how good he was at the time, but you live and learn. Many fond memories.
  10. Is there any racing or simulated coursing? Cheers
  11. have you got whippets? Not anymore. I still go out with one though. I love both whippets and lurchers, but i like my whippets to be true to type (just a peronal thing) and there seems to be too many these days that are out of proportion. I prefer a lurcher for lamping rabbits, again personal preference.
  12. Of course MB whippets will do a good nights lamping just like most other breeds of whippets out there. But for the life of me i have never seen such variation in whippet size....so if you want a whippet with that hidden bit of extra added then go for it. But if you want a genuine whippet look else where.
  13. Ive got M14, takes 4 AA batteries. Very good beam, spot to flood. Ok in medium sized fields. Expensive though. I know some lads on here have a cheap alternative off ebay which sounds good. Some like them others don't. The beam is excellent, but not as good as a good lamp, still good enough depending on your expectations. Hve a look on youtube..some good demonstrations.
  14. Lovely looking bitch...its the type of lurcher that turns my head.
  15. well your giving out wrong advice there as mike brown doesnt breed or hasnt bred "laguna" whippets, dorit mckay and her dorit, lyla bond gunning (now lyla wainman) breed the "laguna,s" not mike brown, mike breeds working whippets, with laguna blood quite a long way back in there breeding/pedigree, they are not laguna,s the title of this thread is LAGUNA WHIPPETS It's nice that at least someone else knows this, as it seems that Mike brown has marketed his(puppy sales) dogs to be Laguna which is not correct. It seems every wannabe lurcher/working whippet owners seems to thnk hi
  16. Nice one. If you get chance keep us updated on how its going.
  17. Ive owned both beardie/border/greyhound and border/greyhound. The beardie/border was a much more natural hunter, more independant, had amazing nose, very rarely injured himself, was the most laid back house dog i have come across, ive never been a foxing man, but my god could this dog find foxes, very good on rabbits with excellent strike. My border collie greyhound has less interest in hunting, just as happy to fetch a stick. If for example i was to hunt the same field the beardie/border would put nose down and eyes up and work the field, my border collie/greyhound woould go 20 yards away from
  18. 15 1/2 years of good memories..keep ya head up pal.
  19. Once you form a good bond with a dog i find it hard to understand how you can get rid of one so flippantly (because its getting old!!). Mine stay for life and are a big part of my family.
  20. Took the lurcher to the vets due to having a lump under its eye which was getting bigger by the day. Turned out to be a abscess caused by a bad tooth, anyway he took that tooth out drained the abscess and took another tooth out while he was doing it.The thing is i asked when, if she can, start having some lamb bones again. He told me i really shouldn't feed my dogs bones because theres a good chance a piece will splinter sooner or later and cause serious problems, saying it does happen quite frequently. I have only started introducing bones (mainly raw lamb bones)to my dogs diet over the last
  21. I had a 1/2 greyhound 1/4 border collie 1/4 beardie collie. Best working hunting dog i have owned, was amazing at finding his quarry, very clever dog, very laid back at home, he lived to eat, sleep, hunt and have his belly rubbed. He wasn't fast enough for daytime a hare over a good course, but thats expected. So the 3/4 should have the edge speed wise. He rarely got injured, had very good skin and feet. Got him from hancock about 15/16 yrs ago.
  22. Tesco is one of the cheapest. Only problem with insurance is it increases a lot with the dogs age. Difference between age 2 and 9 was double the price on on the churchill link, but i think most are like this. I used to put some money aside each month just in case, but due to recent circumstances i have been considering getting it.
