Had a few dogs in the past that might have been considered bad tempered, but if they,re able to let out some of the tension built up in them regular i found they settle, dogs with high drive need to be to ground that charge in them, its that pent up energy that leads to problems, the biting of the lead espically if the dog knows its getting out , and then prevented by you stopping on the walk, is the dog trying to ground the energy through biting because its in front of its face ,and its the same with your trouser leg, he's not trying too cause pain , he feels compelled to mouth something, its

It depends also of your definition of an all rounder, we prefared an rounded lurcher to be able to assist at the end of a dig , while not have had the pace for hare work , a bit of a jack of all trades, Depends on the work intended by its owner, which may not be the same as another lurcher man in a different area,,

Great fighter, RIP , Diego,,

Ok , first things first, scrap the dog bowl, put it away , Start feeding the dog out of your hands, Dont call the dog to you, at all , let her make all her own decisions to come to you for the time being, dont crowd her, she has to want to interact with you herself, and every time she comes, treat her, Keep the eye contact to a minumum, just a glance, not a stare, If you dont like her name, change it, it will have bad associations for her,and when she comes to you, call her her new name, while feeding her, good girl lass, or whatever .Do feck all with her until she trusts you, by that i mean t

<BR><Not sure what your afraid off by adding the wheaton, you certainly ;wont be losing any bottle, i would be looking for something with a bit more pace in the sire, but if ya know how he works and are happy with terrier crosses its a no brainer really,,

Yeah think thats a lot of the problem, its not just the training.. dogs with huge drive with no outlet for it, it has to come out somewhere, Dogs with huge drive who's owners can provide release from them , have some of the most friendly , quiet, bomb proof with kids animals out there,, the problem is lads just dont know how to chanel drive in a way that makes their canines happy campers,,

Does it need to be working , or would ya settle for a show type,,??

what do you carry when out walking??
Casso replied to stiggy's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Usually carry a long piece of grass , neatly placed between my teeth, best of luck bud,, -
The problem is, people take the whole thing too seriously,it becomes personel to lads if they think someone is not taking them or their dogs serious enough, and this whole thing of knowing more ,done more, been out with the dogs more, seems that everyone has too prove themselves to everyone else, why its like that i dont know, i honestly dont give a monkeys bout anyone else, dont know the big names in this game, Its not a competition its a pasttime , a partnership with the mutt and i,he feeds me and i feed him, Its something the anti's will never understand that bond between human and canine,

I think it does somersaults when it chasing , mind you i could be wrong, i have been before,,

Conditioning the dog to see the clipping as something positive works with the canine mind, if she was to associate the clipping of one nail with something really good for her , i dont know , going out ,or being taking for a walk, just one nail, not all at once , over a fortnight , everytime she gets one nail clipped, she gets something great for her, she might start coping on, thats its not such a bad thing,,its a lot easier when they're younger but best of luck with it rob,,

I've always hunted on my todd, and what i've found is, their are some really decent people in this game, very willing to help a fella out with a pup among other things, i detect a certain snobbery and a fear of having one pulled over you in some posts on this thread, Picking a pup from handcock also shows a little inexperience of the lurcher world ,and the hancock bought pup seems like one way of addressing that lack of knowledge, and dealing with lurchermen, The fact that people are still buying out of his yard, after all these years, probably says more about the state of the lurcher world r
-
Same as hancock then we can prove to [NO TEXT TALK] what we do, by invitation only. what exactly is it that you do that makes your honest opinion count for shit? your always trying to pull people down, who's it going to be next? If pulling a puppy farmer down like hancock so be it if it stops only one person not buying one of him its job done Do you honestly think that you will stop anyone going to his yard...why does no one comment on all the dumped dogs in RSPCA kennels...lost count of the lurchers in their pens hardly ever see a Hancock dog there. There's pedlars all over

You wont get away with saying , your only breeding for your own use on here, bud, 3 litters out of that bitch , i would think anyone who knocks 3 litters out of a bitch already has retired her from work and is only interested in breeding her,
-
If her nose is on the floor the whole time, interact with her , play with her out, let her chase you, a lot of dogs only see the inside of a field when hunting, they learn that once they get through that gate , they switch into hunt mode , try to get the pup responding to you in the field before entering her to game, it cuts out alot of bad habits from forming due to deaf ear syndrome,,best of luck with her bud,,

Thats an able looking animal that brindle, jono, like the look of it,

might sound silly wats a grew another one ive heard wats a ghd ghd, is something you use to straighten your hair with, dont have much call for it myself but the mutts look beautifull after it,,

Thats some generalization you've made there bud, anyone who works on site in good weather will pick up a bit of colour, dont mean they know feck all bout dogs, Different kinds of stamina , Over here i hunt i where the game is, didn't know i needed different kinds of stamina in the dogs for different areas, fit dog is a fit dog in anybodys book,,

Never heard that till i came on here, had my first at 16 and could not have been happier with her, she was a first cross, i believe beddys are much more forgiven of bad handling because they dont take offence as quick as other crosses, so i would say for a beginner they are perfect ,, Your going to get a lot of people on here telling you different, but thats down to their own ability and not the dog, If ya want something bud, thats going to jump through hoops for ya , get a collie cross, if ya want a dog that will respond to work with relish and is up there with the best of them when the goin

no wonder no kids take it up. !

Its funny, years ago you used to nearly have to serve an apprenticeship, carrying rabbits, spade , ferret box, took ages, learing bits and pieces, listening, reading , saving up your money for your first pup, My only gripe with some young lads is that the expect instant results without having put in the ground work and if the dog isnt perfect just get rid of it , or worse bred it, hoping the pup will be perfect, ;when at the end of the day the fault lies with them,, -
Look for drive in the pup, the pup that wants something more than the rest , it may not be the most friendly pup or the biggest, take your time watching them , never choose a pup in less than an hour, its time worth investing,,trying to pick out a pup with good feet at that age is like trying to pick the lotto numbers, the feet on the parents might give ya some idea but not always,,best of luck
