  1. If i was just getting one for the red lad pre ban,i would opt for a 3/4 bred animal,,with foxy you must put him under pressure fast, if he gets a head of steam up your dog is going to run out of field space and your fox will be gone All the gameness in the world wont catch him if your dog dont have the legs,,,
  2. He's going through the same learning curve most young lurchers go through ,,it will take time,, Give a "Get Ready" command when you've spotted a bunny and knocked the lamp off,, This will alert him if done enough times that a rabbit is about to be run It will also get his head out of his ass and looking, and in time he will figure out the best place to look is down the beam,, Best of luck,,
  3. I've never heard of anything like that before fella, but its a pain having to deal with vets in situations like that,,lost a fine dog pup 8 months earlier this year, knew something wasn't right with him , brought him in , vet checked him, few tablets, sent home, back in few days later, sent home again, and on the third visit , they decided to scan him, scanned him, opened him up, but it was too f*****g late, the gut was twisted for too long and blood supply had been cut off, ,,after that , having to pay for the scan and operation , both of which were performed nearly a week too late,,how the
  4. Seems to be lads out there, who cant turn down a pup either, may have a couple of dogs already,,hear bout pups for sale, breeding seems right, and just go for it, not understanding how much you need to put into a pup to get him to a high standard,,,lads spread themselves too lightly over too many dogs
  5. She sounds like a girl i used to know, all legs and no brains,,great combination,,,,,only kidding bud
  6. Its not used much in the lurcher world, i get the dogs responding to tug play, from an early age it focuses them on you, its part of their prey drive and nothing has a stronger pull for a dog then its drive, i've used food and praise in the past, but felt it can be hit and miss with some dogs, if you can get a dog switched on to it, there is nothing that cant trained, within reason,,i use 2 tug items for retrieve,,get him nuts for play for afew days,,when you play tug, Always let him win, let him run off with it,,then produce the second one , run backwards and call him up, if he's mad for pla
  7. As the man said,,sounds like your doing fine, i like to walk up on squatters with the lamp on with pups,,and if the bunny bolts try to give a command as soon as the rabbit moves,,that way he associates your command with the rabbit running, and him running,, it helps to be able to send him down the beam on squatters later on that command,,ps Id offload the not so keen pup and just pump all the work into the keen one, he'll be twice the dog he is now by the end of the season with all the work,,Best of luck pete,, Dogs mature at different ages, I've seen dogs not clicking until they are 18

  9. canine genetics,,is a thread in itself,,smooth coat from 2 rough parents and rough coats from 2 smooth parent, never surprised anymore ,what will be thrown up,,,
  10. thats an interesting one,,sometimes the only thing that seperates the good from the not so good,,is a personality trait,,on say a litter of 8 you'll get 8 different personalities, some full on some laid back,,it dont mean the laid back pup can throw a cracker,,,or does it..?? At what point does quality of training become an issue? For a lamping dog , which is what i mostly do, i try to achieve an understanding with the mutt,he must trust you,, recall , retrieve and generally good manners,,the rest is up to the dog and his natural ability,,the more work you give him ,the better
  11. Well I suppose carrying toilet roll saves using the back of my hand, but I never carry any...... you could use the permission slip coz thats all its good for He uses nettle leaves, he so fecking tough,,eh tough man

  14. A little tip that works for me is, when im training the recall i teach the dog to come right in and touch his nose to the palm of my left hand, that way he has a point of contact that he knows,,so when he retrieves he comes right in ,when you pull your left hand back , instead of just coming in front of you and maybe shying away from your out reaching hand,,best of luck,,
  15. You will still have to make it worth his while in the long run, i found a lot of lads call their dog up a lot, for no reason, i rarely call the dog up, and when i do , i give him praise or whatever, but then again i don't give him attention unless he's doing something i want him to do , if the dog get's use to getting attention when he wants it, he's not going to work for it, is he ?? ,the line is just there to reinforce the fact that he's still under your control and within range to train properly,, also found it very good help for stock breaking,,Best of luck
  16. The only bloke you need to justify your deeds to ,,is yourself,,the rest of it , is cyber bullshit land,,best of luck,,
  17. I wouldn't get rid of her,,you could pull her round,,can i ask ya,has she been out much this year, or was it one of her first times out this season,,
  18. Well i think the answer lies with you,,if you're willing to let them on to do a bit, maybe lamping but not anywhere there is stock, or ferretting,,your a member of a hunting site, and must have noticed what problems lads have getting permission, i'm sure if you made contact with them , you'd find they're probably not bad lads,,,
  19. What do you think separates a good dog from a great one , given that they have both done the same amount of work , both have good owners, and get the same amount of exercise, one will always have the edge on the other,,What do you think it is , pace, heart , agility, stamina,,used to hunt with mostly terrier blooded dogs with plenty of heart, but have come round to thinking that , there are some breeds of lurcher out there, who are just naturally more flexible and agile and make the job look so much easier than others,,, any thoughts most welcome,,
  20. Does it not depend on what hunting you do , what mutt you chose , Failure rate and how the dog turns out , i would put down to owner, , Are you talking bout a pup or a full grown dog,,
  21. In evolutionary terms , the hares that sits and waits will be coursed and maybe caught, whereas the timid , nervous hare will f**k off as soon as it hears or feels something is just not right, weak or strong wont come into it,,
  22. thats not a true terrier just a over hyped dog thats not been trained properly!!! a proper terriers knows his job and sticks to it not a liabilty like yours argee 100%,, A high drive dog can be a real handfull with the wrong owner, but in the right hands can make a outstanding worker, The thing bout drive is, if you dont focus the dogs drive onto you first and what you want it to do, it will find its own outlet for it, and thats where people run into trouble,,A dog with drive is actually a lot easier to train and very responsive , Alot of lads spend hours trying to focus a pups
  23. Pups will respond to any friendly tone in your voice, but associate its name with grub , and their all ears,,
