[Thanks for the replys lads,,;but my question would be, what has made a dog hard mouthed to start off with ,, ;every pup is an open book ,to mould whichever you'd like, im sure not all bulls are hard mouthed either,
-
Does anyone know a surefire method of getting a softmouthed dog, i know there's a lot of theories out there about it, Has anyone got one that defo works after been put into practise, I used to think it was the look of the draw , some are and some are not , i've tried to keep pups softmouthed in the past , e g, starting them on rabbits , keeping them that way till they know the score on retrieving etc, it just hasn't worked out, i know taking an odd fox would'nt help matters,, Or has one had them on fox regular ;and still retrieved bunnys softmouthed ??any experiences most welcome , thanks,

Back in 1981, windy night , battery charged, the aul lad decided we'd head out and have a look round, we were just out the door when my brother , full to the gills , just back from the local , decided to tag along,,to cut a long story short, wasn't having much look , lamping from the road, stopped at this little field had to climb up a bank to get a look in, 2 pairs of eyes in the top left,, great , bitch gone on , wait ok flick back on the lamp, one pair of eyes left, anyway bitch is there now , still not much movement, then f**k me it started running,,8 pointer thundering down by the left h

Respect where respect is due, watched a vixen couple of times last year when out with the dogs, she was dug out by the hunt later on , watched her as i'd watch any wildlife, not love or hate , just interested, I'll probably try the up coming pup on one in time, just to test his mettle , to see what he's made off , but have no great need to work them any more, cant eat the f****r, cant sell it, cant feed the dogs on it, now if one was annoying me out lamping it becomes personal and all bets are off, apart from that , just cant be f*****g bothered anymore,,the rural fox has his place,,the urba

what to take when working lurcher
Casso replied to calum henderson's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
your thinking too far ahead bud, get the pup sorted first, good feeding , vacs ,etc ,after that, the best thing you can do is spend time with it , what kit you need will depend on what you plan doing with the pup, maybe lamp and battery,i dont know, only you know , what you intend doing with it ,,best of luck ,, -
I would prefare a lurcher bud, simply because i started with lurchers and lamping was my thing, got into ferreting after that ,still cant take ferreting seriously enough, shit maybe im not the right guy to answer this,,one thing i know ,, you will catch more with a running dog,,
-
i try to start a pup on rabbits simply because they dont bite back and there's less chance of any surprise or wont trigger any thing in the pups mind in mouthing live fur for the first time, first experiences for your pup are sometimes make or break, either would you start him on rats for the same reason, all your pup needs to learn to do is catch and retrieve and for it to be an enjoyable experience, thats just my theory on it,,

I dont get this one , some breed have been bred to take instruction from man, collies ,etc thats understood, they twig on quick,, bulls have not been bred in such a way, however given enough work , the right man and bull cross , there is very little that cannot be communicated between the two ,,but you need the work and the bond,,
-
this cross has its purpose depends what you do,as most should know speed aint everthing mine will catch just as much as any other cross It would probably kill as much ,but catching might be another matter,,
-
you'll have to get her on her own and do a bit lamping with her, just a question , what do ya want 2 lurchers for , your first dog will still be learing his trade and you should be still putting the work into him, your new pup is probably young still is she ? it'll come in time, i would rather have one good one than two average ones, the more work you give them , the more they learn,,
-
Good pics , Keen looking dogs there, good to see them out doing a bit,, best of luck with them
-
Sure......I have no doubt. But the c**ts were passionate ,too. What they lack are communication skills. You'd be amazed how more open to new ideas alot of people are after a good ass whipping. At the end of the day bud , it dont really matter what anybody thinks of your dogs, everyone is allowed voice their own opinion, in the land of the free , and all that,,

If i've got a choice on a litter , i go for the one that shows the most drive ,get them out on their own one at a time, somewhere neutral, garden or maybe a room in the house, and throw something soft, the pup who chases and retrieves back to the best of his ability is a likely candidate ,,you should be able to narrow it down to a couple of pups after that , after that its which ever one takes your fancy,, good luck with it,,
-
Sorry to hear bout that ,How does it effect him, he's got to that age with it , will you not get a few more years out of him,? when his heart beat rises he nearly chokes to death and he vomits i dont know much about the dog i rescued him a month ago cos he was covered in mange and underweight friends of mine that knows the dog says he never had any trouble when he was younger i think he developed it when he was being mistreated ive got a litter of pups here pal,and due to your bad luck i would have gave you one but im afraid they are definately not bull crosses atb with him anyway

Lurchers in general dont need to follow that many commands, the basic stuff is fine, if it runs, the dog will chase it ,so breaking to stock of all kinds is a must,, , good recall, good retrieve, and given enough work the dog should come good , not sure where making a racket comes into it, ? if its your first lurcher i would get a pup, i never trust a dog unless i know its history, as far as breeding goes, lurcher x lurcher works better than anything,,
-
Why do ya buy a pup and then start wondering about it after, belive it or not, a lot of what the pup achieves is down to you and you alone, just try and enjoy the dog for what it can physically do, after all it was you who decided on it not the other way round, dont matter what anyone else thinks,,

saluki cross what are pros and cons
Casso replied to Water Badger's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Good post, you seem to be someone who knows their stuff, something i always wondered about, if saluki lurchers are bred to each other over generations , can some of the unwanted traits be bred out, what im trying to say is, do they become more social and responsive without adding any other any other breeding ,eg collie, bull etc, Just saluki lurcher to saluki lurcher,, -
Lurchers respond the same to training as any other dog, but with a higher prey drive, there are plenty of dog training books out there, i've read some complete shite years ago about training in one of the lurcher books and never read another one, Whats work for your average mutt , will work for a lurcher because they tend to be smarter , due to the fact that their a hybrid,,
-
as long as she is responsive to the recall and not hunting too far in front of you, try to work on the retrieve and heel if you can,out in the field because thats where it counts, i dont let any of mine see game until i feel we have a good understanding ,and can get through , over or under anything ,time spent breaking her to stock is always a good investment , Start your pup when you think she ready , fit enough and mature enough, there's is no perfect age , every dog will be different ,a little on the lead will teach her control and, control of her liberty at times lets her know your in ch

The pup could turn out to be a good worker, but its a trait i completely avoid in a pup, they seems to take offence over the smallest matter, had a couple in the past just never took to them the same as a forward pup, i would rather have to hold a pup back , than to try to coax him on all the time,,
-
Have you worked with any others lurchers before you alsation x? Ask skycat off here, shes the columist in the countrymans weekly sold nationwide... she has owned them... If i recall she said they were fearless but not the best lurcher for any allround work, and not the quickest... Skycat is a columist in the countrymans weekly ,, is that true,?

For me it depends on what your going to do with him, before you do anything , have an understanding bond made with the dog,, if its a lamping dog i'd start him on the lamp, dont over tax him, keep an eye on him after a couple of runs, praise him when he comes back after knocking off the lamp,,,If its mostly for day work ,, bit of training in the field before entering ,what he will do at home may not happen when out, hunting is the ultimate distraction to running dogs, and trying to train in the field after entering is like trying to hold back the tide, many ways to start, ferreting, mooching,

What is peoples thoughts on this advert??
Casso replied to deanflute's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Just to throw the cat among the pidgeons here, but of all the pups that get spewed out every year , do you think they all end up having long careers in honest working homes, you dont need to steal dogs , look at the numbers chucked up for sale on this site alone every day, and most of them are meant to be 100% , what about the ones that dont make it , dog shelter or this muppet, at least there is a chance of getting off death row with yer man there,, -
