  1. When he's ready is the simple answer, it depends how well you know dogs as well, is he showing sign of maturity, fancies himself a bit, past experiences with him will tell you a lot, even if he's first is not a great sucess , dont panic, because if he's made of the right stuff for fox work , he make the second one pay big time,,and if its not to be its not to be,,
  2. you give a dog enough work and he'll wise up to his job,,
  3. I cant imagine any circumstances where you would lose a dog lamping, if trained , If someone did lose one i would put it down to bad training by the owner and not try to blame the breed of dog,,
  4. Your not getting much responce there Dan, the only thing i can tell you is, had a beddy cross years ago, one the the gamest lurchers ive kept, she threw to the sire , short tail, feet were not great,, not huge speed ,the reason i mention her flaws are that without the gameness of the sire she would probably have been f*****g useless, i'll give ya an example , went out one day to dig a fox with a few lads who were supposed to have working terriers, ended up using her, letting her in, digging down and letting her on up again, But i wouldn't touch the same cross today unless i was 100% sure
  5. What do ya mean by , spurts of speed, fm,,
  6. Not sure why you see it as a set back, dont know why every bloody house in some areas needs a cat, this time of year with so many young birds and mammals about , f*****g cats take a huge toll on them, with numbers of song bird dropping every year but everyone one is been told to encourage wildlife into their gardens , but nothing is been done abouts cats, for every one rabbit taken by lurchers i would think that 20 are taken by moggies, Watched a she cat years ago with a litter in the barn, clear a long hedgerow of young rabbits until the kittens were weaned, very effective killers on small pr
  7. Not all dogs are motivated by food, get him used to working on the tug toys with you, it may take a while to get him going, he sounds like a very low drive pup, use a certain phrase when your taking out the toy at home and get him very excited bout it, give him only a few seconds at the start, gradually building it up to longer, but always leave him wanting more, then when he's ape shit bout the toy on a daily basis, take it out with you when your out with him in the field, using that certain phrase to call him up and give him a play with it, service dog will work for f*****g hours just to pl
  8. Rest,,if you had 7 good years with him and thats his only complaint i think he's serve ya well
  9. Had a first x beddy hound bitch in the past, very usefull on all game, never came across a ferret till she was about 4,was out with a few lads ferreting one day not really my thing at the time so i was holding her well back, at one stage the bloody ferret came flying out of a hole and she lunged at it, i thought it was a goner, but she didn't touch it, looking back on it after , i think she had made an assocation between the ferret and us ,She had been shown a lot of work at that stage, and could pick up on my emotions in a given situation very quick, not sure what would have happened if she was
  10. Yes she comes back everytime i call her inside the home or garden or in a confined field where there is no distraction. It'll take over a month to form any sort of bond with her, if you let her off before she thinks its in her best interest to come to you , she's gone, she needs working with but not somewhere infested with bunnys at the minute and not in the garden, you need to create some sort of motivation for her to come back when called, i'd use a long line with her for the minute, and make it worth her while coming back, i wouldn't advise force , where the bond is not formed bet
  11. What's he like on something that wants to mix it with him,,
  12. The fact that she is a rescue, is probably down to her taking off when she gets into a field, lurchers, well trained wont do it, training pups doesn't seem to be a big issue with some owners ,they seem to be more interested in entering early before a good bond is made between dog and owner, the dog not finding the owner very interesting and maybe a little confusing will find its own interests when it comes of age, and in this case its hunting rabbits on its own, the recall is good at home because there are no distractions, best of luck ,,
  13. What circumstances is your dog in , is he in the house or outside, is he well exercised, have there been any changes that occured round the time he started scratching, have you changed his food recently, the reason i ask this is because as you already said, he hasn't got fleas etc, so it must be a reaction to something in his envoirment, food , bored, bedding, etc, have a good think about, im sure you,ll find the answer,, best of luck with him bud,,
  14. Are they a dog and bitch, you'd sell the pups liks hot cakes on here, 2 Dogs, they can't even get that right....!

  16. Had a bitch years ago, she wasnt the fastest dog, ugly as sin , bad feet and breath , short tail, but she had a real good attitude to work and the harder the better, she really opened my eyes to hunting and how the right attitude in a lurcher could surpass its physical limitations, she could draw with the best of them, lock on and hold big sika till the troops arrived, you could throw her over a ditch and she'd land running then straight back in the the van, lived to work ,did'nt want affection of any sort, game as they come, great with kids and sadly missed,, she was first cross beddy greyho

    Cute Foxes

BOY O BOY, a lot of head scratching going on this morning, animals that have been encouraged into a lot of urban garden's , have now bitten the hand that feed them, Pesty's stand by your phones..
  18. a few lads mentioned that for those that dont hunt in summer months for the sake of not wanting to run their dogs on hard ground is one of the reason i have never lure coursed mine.the other reason is i would get no thrill watching my dog run in a race trying to catch a plastic bag. ok for some that treat it as something to do on the off season but there are many that do nothing else and treat it as a very serious affair and have bred lurchers for such a purpose which for me is the same as showing and it will be the downfall for alot of lurcher breeds. lurchers for me are born to work and lo
  19. Anything that helps to show lurchers in a good light , having spent the last few years under the media hammer, is a good thing for us hunting folk in general, a little fun for the watching public, and is badly needed PR,,
  20. Funny age for a pup, he's into his teenage era at 8 months, dogs are well known for throwing the deaf ear at that stage, whatever you do ,dont lose it with him, he'll pick up on you very quick, Try different treats, eg, dont give the same treat twice in a row, in the same session, bit of cheese first, chicken , meat, its a lot of hassle but it gets the dog interest in you, because he dont know whats coming next. Food is not every dogs motivator but you know your dog better than anyone, the old bill use play treats with their animals, and it works, very well, you could try that and see how
  21. i try to get pups at 6 weeks , simply because i want to put my own stamp on them, i like to handle them well from the word go ,a pup confident with people is so much easier to work with, also the bitch can leave lasting imprinted behaviors on pups if she's a little nervous and scatty, saying that i completely understand what ideation has mentioned on here, and it will need to be well socialised with other dogs as it grows,,but you also find at that age that you get to see all the pups, because lads are looking for them later, so there's a good chance of getting your pick of the litter, in s
