If you decide its not for you do the dog a favour and pts. I had one i wasted 6 months with,it fell into the type skycat mentioned, there was no helping it,every thing i tried seem to work untill the dog learned what was going on and he would then fight that, went weeks without being able to touch him at all, food in kennel walk away, run up and close the gate.Couple of times i had to grab him any one thats ever handled fox hounds at injection time will know the score,he wouldnt stop untill you where able to clip the lead on. Then one day he wouldnt jump in van to go a walk so i left him home cam

Will A Pure Grey Be Any Good In The Field ?
weasle replied to Kemperz21's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Always fancied a pup myself, bring it up like a lurcher get it out a lot as a pup old head on young shoulders and all that, never have though because it's highly likely it would end in tears. -
Catching More Than One Rabbit Off A Single Slip?
weasle replied to squab's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Seen a dog drop one to catch another, I've had a dog that wouldn't retrieve didn't like it much, always go out of my way to have dogs with a decent retrieve now. Also had a dog that would make rabbits squeal carrying them back, was handy back in the day, would spook some rabbits but others would just freeze, and if there was a fox around it would fly in. -
I have also heard that if your dog is chipped they can ping it, even make your dog jack. But seriously while I ain't doubting the tec is there, how many lads have been done like this? Would have thought finding your car ect would be a lot easier cheaper maybe I'm out of touch hunting the bunnys.

If I could make one rule with dogs it would be if you don't want it,YOU personally have to put it down. People would think much harder about there choices, and there would be a lot less dogs being passed from home to home.

Lamping rabbits you could do it with any old dog and should be catching decent numbers. The dog I had catch the most rabbits with both in a night and just numbers.I don't think I ever really got excited about, watching her was dull. Slow and careful but because of that she could go out night after night. Wasn't worth taking her out for a mooch in the day because even if a good chance came up it would be missed, when you get to the stage of being bored at night and not worth the effort during the day, your partnership is in trouble. So while a decent catch rate is important so is that excitement

Where Are Hare Coursing Events Held In Ireland ?
weasle replied to Kemperz21's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Don't rate it much myself,it's all about the run up,gets boring after2 courses for want of a better word. But when if it goes it will be the thin edge of the wedge. -
I knew a lad around nm in 90-00 got out a bit never had any trouble, walking places run or two of,on he's own sprinting dog so he could know he wasn't going to slip a dog and it end up in next parish.Trouble is and always was lads going mob handed with a f??k it attitude.

Saw a story on the net few years ago where they put out mixie and vhd on some plague of rabbits in oz or New Zealand, it was 99. Something fatal ( been a long time since I read it). Since I've seen plenty of very similar rabbits that get mild mixie every year ,suddenly get a dose that wipes them out,you see a few with mixie but most disappear ,a few survivors seem to be traveling from bury to bury,as though lonely, probably stunk out by the smell of all the dead, seen a few rabbits sat by the hedge hop in ,when you get there dead in hedge, head stretched up over there back looking in the sky.
-
Think you will find it's being mixed with mixie, I have permission well spread about and what wasn't wiped out last year has been this year,as Johnny said it wipes them out and they never seem to come back. Seen places hit 5,6 year ago still not a rabbit you see the odd couple and think they might come back then they seem to die of it's not good.

Mine in second season started killing rabbits dropping them in way in,walking around for 10 minutes trying to find a rabbit is dam frustrating. She might retrieve first, basically always looking for the easy option, catch rate was alright on lamp,I had loads of easy rabbits. Could have been very average but her head wasn't in it. Many a windy night I have thought to myself I ain't going out tonight,go out side dog bouncing at gate, ended up going any way. This one you would have to call her out of kennel. I've had worse, that would never think of quitting in any way. Some just ain't got it m

Two good posts there. Always amazed when people claim never had a dog fail them. I had one similar to you spent her second season treating her like a pup one good catch and home, kind of worked but truth was for a long time I was working a dog I had no faith in,caught her share on lamp but there was always something missing. Many a mooch or ferreting trip was ruined by a golden opportunity(one of those you could walk for a year to get again) where missed. No matter how much you try and pat your dog they sense what you are really thinking IMO . Any way your along way from that get the dog c

Slightly different but seen em get excited going towards certain places when they have killed something there before even if it was the first and last time there. Back in the day had a dog that loved foxes the sound of a magpie chattering would have her flat out to see what it had seen. Truth is they take it all in and probably know us better than we know our selves.

Mine do daytime,if your ferreting and rabbit slips net you cannot tell the dog not to chase it cause grounds to hard. Find dogs that are used to it know when to let there selves down or take it easy.

Caucasian Ovtcharka Aka Russian Bear Dog Cross Greyhound?
weasle replied to yeoldhunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The dog ain't trying very hard to get to the other or the lad holding it is very strong. Back to a whippet could be handy -
You said you got paid who pays you? What dogs do you use beside Airedales ? Are you not snowed in through the winter? Same dogs good for a bear ,=good for cats? Sorry lol.
-
Pmul any chance you have any pictures accounts of Genuine hunting for big cats bears you would share make the thread worth while?
-
So the guys not keen on Airedales then? Lol ......I like the 'Stonehenge' excerpt......he got through 14 Airedales before coming to the conclusion that they were no good lol.....different time, different class......fascinating read . you cannot say he didn't give them a fair chance or generalising lol. Good read though as you say. A few good points in it,feeding a dog that you could get something quarter the size to do the same job. Personally couldn't live with a dog so big and strong if I saw it skipping around a fox no matter how good it was at bushing. But each to there

You cannot have it all ways go on about gameness one minute, Then it ain't important the next. Not obsessed with gameness my self,Gamest thing I have is a ferret. I have never seen a picture of one yet put up by the proud American owner of one any where near a animal that could defend its self.Yet they fly over here and become Rambo.lol http://airedalesareafailure.wordpress.com/about/
-
I picked up all that from reading bits about them on net (I'm not as stupid as I sound). As I say all great in America but maybe not so good in uk. Must be better for pups to go to homes that know that, than passed around as a jacker.imo
-
That's fair enough,as long as you know what your getting, but reading this and other threads you would think your getting a monster used to hunt bears ect ect, thing is though a brave bear dog wouldn't last long I would think.so on one hand your being told about the mighty American Airedale on the other you have Americans breeding to stay out of harms way.Different country's different jobs. Solution same one that's been used for years to save a breed ad a bit of bull lol

No one can guarantee that's the point I was making. Dog in pic was driven but wouldn't commit if it meant getting bit or hurt, seen her pull up on rabbits if they ran under electric fence even though it was one strand 3 ft high.more than capable of killing a fox,BUT only if with another dog OR she could get a perfect hold straight away. Totally different dog if out with others. Any American site there will be plenty of people outside the Airedale lovers who will say they wouldn't give one house room because they lack that (stupidity) if you like to get hurt.(maybe coincidence.) Yet on here

Go on any american website see pictures of the same even racoons, useful if you are using them to shoot a bear or couger not so useful in the middle of a field in the middle of the night.
