  1. If I’m not mistaken, they were denied a northern base by turkey but Kuwait allowed them a southern base, which for anyone who had a map will see is on the border, no thousands of miles away in the other side of a hostile state. And they launched a massive naval and amphibious assault from the sea in the gulf, also obviously right on Iraq’s border (maritime). There strategic bombers can probably fly mission from the homeland with tankers to refuel, never mind from closer bases in Europe etc. Their whole military is based around power projection and the logistics chain is absolutely essential to
  2. Iraq was something like the fourth largest military on the planet at the time I believe. They were expected to put up much more resistance than they did. They were a respectable force and they crumbled relatively easily. It doesn’t make any sense to go to the hassle of taking afghan to take Iraq. It might have been handy for Iran but that wasn’t the claim.
  3. The point non interventionists miss with all this is unfortunately there has to be a top dog. There has to be someone on the throne in geopolitical terms. And god forbid the day soon when that seat is contested. If the yanks weren’t trying to assert control of geostrategic regions then another would and will step in. It ain’t right or fair but it could be a damn sight less so.
  4. That’s the second time you’ve said Afghan was taken as a forward base for invading Iraq. Mate, have you looked at a map? Why base in Afghan which is the other side of Iran from Iraq when they already have bases on Iraq’s border, about 11 carrier strike groups that can sit in the eastern med and Persian gulf (much closer) and bases in Europe to fly air lift and strategic bombers from? It’s just nonsense.
  5. Look at the history of military action between Vietnam and the Iraq war and I think there was a lot of success. I'm not talking moral justifications and I'm certainly not meaning to sound like a fan/supporter, simply objectively looking at how successful the use of force was in achieving policy. Then come 2001/2003 and that all gets turned on it's head with successive policy failures, either due to action or even lack of action, but equally some smaller scale successes. I wonder what opinions there are on the factors that affect success and failure....
  6. I don’t think Afghanistan was just about the taliban. It was also about al-qaeda. And they’ve been leathering them anywhere they can find them. Which is arguably what should’ve been the limit of policy there and everywhere. Hindsight…. Go on, someone tell us all about opium trade and oil pipelines….
  7. I'm not getting into this thread because it's full of the usual. I just wanted to say that I think this belief is dangerous, and not for the reason you might think mate. It's not an uncommon view that the earth/nature will eventually 'set us straight' through some sort of doomsday event brought about by our greed and ignorance. It's shared by environmentalists as a genuine sort of spiritual belief as much as activists who think the only way to motivate joe bloggs into sustainability is through the threat of doom. The danger is that imo it doesn't motivate so much as act as a crutch, it en
  8. I agree. Politically I oppose certain levels of coercion and certainly mandatory vaccination of citizens.
  9. I honestly don’t care mate. I’m not getting into it with them. SC asked a fair question and presented his understanding and I’ve offered mine if it helps. I could quite happily have let half a million people die on ventilators if I’m perfectly honest. Most folk wouldn’t though and vaccination is realistically the best strategy to avoid that so I’m on board.
  10. Vaccination reduces transmission, it doesn’t eliminate it. The reason they have said that vaccinated individuals can still contract and transmit the virus is because they can, just not to the same degree. Until the data showed that vaccination had got the severe and fatal cases under control they weren’t willing to allow vaccinated people the freedom to contribute, albeit it to a lesser extent, to transmission. Also the risk comparison for covid vs vaccination seems wrong to me and oversimplified. Finally, in the history of vaccination, there has never been a side effect recorded tha
  11. f**k it off then and do upper/lower split. You've got to have some faith in your training or you're just adding another hurdle to sustaining it. And that seems to be one of the foundations to achieving anything, sustainability. Belief is a strong and enduring motivator.
  12. I think they predominantly fought the insurgency with firepower rather than cunning and ruthlessness. Though they did have notorious success with the Phoenix programme. Which reminds me of the true masters of counter insurgency and this scene…
  13. It’s called ‘intuitive eating’. Counting macros certainly isn’t pointless, but anyone that has been training consistently for some amount of time will gain a level of intuition and feeling rather than having to rely on quantifying everything. Even then people who are taking their training to the extreme will often still count to some extent. I personally just look in the mirror and adjust intuitively but my goals are fairly modest.
  14. Totally agree mate but there comes a point when I just had to wonder why I was wasting money. Ultimately the lessons were to gain confidence in the sea which it did but I’d liked to have actually succeeded in becoming a good swimmer too to add another aspect to my fitness.
  15. I’ve been able to swim since a kid, I’m just shit at it. I could manage two lengths maybe before I’m about to drown. Ha! I could go into detail about what technical problems I had and put right through lessons but for whatever reason I couldn’t get to the point where it was effortless, it always feels like I have to put 95% effort into it to keep some sort of semblance of technique and that is just not sustainable. I honestly think my biggest problem is that my buoyancy is just so low. My instructor literally had to scratch her head on how to get me to float on my back and be able to breath at
  16. I must say I found lessons very enjoyable. Hoping in the pool just after a toddler climbs out for my lesson with the instructor required a lot of humility I think and it’s really humbling. I’d love to go again but I’d take some convincing that I’m not just pissing into the wind. I’ve just given up with the idea tbh. I think my buoyancy suits me to snorkelling. Lol
  17. Heartfelt post. I tried swimming lessons again a few years ago and I felt like technically my stroke really improved. But it didn’t translate into a yard more in distance. I’d love to swim weekly but I suppose I’m just not cut out for it. Now I suppose this is stupid but I look forward to summer days finding quiet bays and coves for a solitary snorkel and spearfish at. Maybe one day I’ll drown and in those last moments be thinking how f***ing dumb I am or maybe fate is on my side and my judgement will be enough. I often wonder if it’s a skill I needed to perfect as a child?
  18. Clarkson ain’t daft. Yeah he can afford to f**k up and in fact it’s a profitable part of his brand but he clearly had respect for his whole teams expertise in all areas of farming. He was frank about hunting, badgers and the absolute monster the regulatory system has become. I personally think his show has done good. The best example of farming I’ve seen is an estate owned by a hedge fund manager type. The system might have its flaws but it’s not all industry abusing yuppies.
  19. Just FYI but he did turn a profit. And given how much of a f***ing hinderance he was that is amazing! LOL
  20. Very good. They all make for an entertaining team and he’s done farming justice and brought it to the public in a way that countryfile completely fails to.
  21. Swerrrrrrvvveeee! And round and round we go
  22. Another fantasy interpretation of reality! Easy enough to prove like... but then you’ll just play dumb again eh.
