In fact, as if by coincidence the MoD have just handed out contracts for the concept phase of the astute replacement…

Comparisons are always complex but in terms of ability to project power the RN is second only to the USN. But paying for that capability has come at the expense of mass. We lack hulls, redundancy and have let certain replacement programs slide too far. There’s a fair argument to be had in favour of a less ambitious but hard hitting green water navy. Kim makes a fair point to this end, I just don’t agree with any of his examples.

All of the astute class are either in commission or under construction. Supporting ships? You mean RFA or escorts? There’s enough to support two independent CSGs in a low threat environment or one in a high threat. But no one runs a navy expecting all ships to be operational all of the time. Two carriers were ordered so we could have one available at all times. F35 procurement hasn’t finished. I believe by 2024 we’ll be able to deploy an air wing of 24, not including those dedicated for other duties. And that still won’t be the end of the procurement. Theres many things we can

He can’t honestly have believed they would go any other way. The Rafal is a great multi role fighter, but it’s outdated now, or at least soon will be. Everyone with any sort of sensible budget is going for the lightening or funding their own sovereign fifth/sixth gen projects.

To be fair though they are actually very good at making stuff. They’re unreliable partners in projects but they have produced some good kit. But when we’re talking nuclear subs, the UK/US are the worlds best. Though again the french are probably every bit as capable with the reactors.
  6. Funny you mention that, I was out with the heythrop last week and the covers were exploding with roe.
  7. People are free to boycott whoever they want. That could be instantaneous and wouldn’t be seen as an escalation in the same way that a legally mandated boycott would. I think this is semantic. I’ve been explicit about the threat that the rise of China is to world peace for some time. But we kill our ‘enemies’. They are a potential enemy, a serious concern, the enemy of some, but the west aren’t there yet. We’re in competition with them and how that competition plays out will determine how much we come to see each other as enemies. I think ‘adversary’ is the term.
  8. I think economic tactics have a place but if we just cut them off then not only does that hurt us but it very clearly says ‘we’re enemies and this is war’. I mean this is warming up to a second Cold War and a Cold War is only one bad decision from being a world war. Do we really want to be escalating to a full Cold War status? I think we need to remember that China aren’t our enemy. They’re a growing power with very different ethics and philosophies to the west and as such there will be areas of conflict but that doesn’t mean we can’t move forward carefully and peacefully. Cutting them of
  9. I really suspect that’s an over simplification but I’m not aware of the events you are referring too. My immediate suspicion is that it was a legitimate deescalation, not at all treason. But I don’t know and frankly I’m not willing to find out. The point is nuclear subs are a strategic game changing weapon. An additional allied fleet of them is like gaining another queen in a game of chess. Despite what you are claiming I very much doubt that this general would be tipping off China in a shooting war. You’re oversimplifying things IMO. But again, I don’t know what’s happened and not really
  10. All he really said there was that he believes in being educated on it and remaining open minded. Mate I’m not exactly a big fan of these modern liberalism but I’m not seeing anything particularly outrageous in that exert and tbh I don’t care for this sort of stuff. I honestly feel it’s just partisan tit for tat nonsense.
  11. I think that I’ve never heard of general milley in my life, lol. And I strongly suspect what’s being reported is in reality meaningless but is being delivered by those with strong bias and agenda. Much bigger news is the $50B tech sharing deal between UK/US/AUS to build the ozzies a fleet of 12 nuclear powered attack submarines amongst other stuff. This is not only a serious strategic move to counter China in the east but a bit of a f**k you to France who had a deal with the ozzies to build them diesel electric boats.
  12. Turning Point - 9/11 and the war on terror on Netflix Really worthwhile series on 911 and the events that followed.
  13. Believe it or not, under the original definition Ireland was in the ‘third world’. NATO being the first world, Warsaw Pact and co being second, impartials being third. And that’s all I have to add to this thread. Ha
  14. The bitter after taste of a country on furlough…
  15. Like cats with live, the men of Wales are born with spare fingers. All 11 of them. Its called evolution!
  16. I think that's a fundamental and false assumption. No doubt there will be a pile of SME's come to the fore who predicted this and we'll all be wondering why no one listened to them. But having worked in a few different tech industries and as someone who follows developments in other tech industries, as much as I'm fascinated by technology developments I'm also shocked by the gaping holes that joe bloggs would have just taken as granted.
  17. I think the situation destabilised much quicker than they expected. The ANA collapsed so quickly. I think the time allocated is still sufficient to get staff and soldiers out but finding all the Afghan interpreters etc probably isn’t considered essential in that equation.
  18. Apaches doing crowd control.... Not gonna lie, I bet there's a bit of a buzz being out there right now, amongst the chaos, seeing history unfold.
  19. Oh no, where will the investment bankers of the capital buy cheap houses now…..
  20. Just a quick point of caution to everyone really… talking about the effects of radiation, like it’s all the same, is like talking about the lethality of guns like they’re all the same. And I’d include cap guns in that analogy! Some electromagnetic radiation in high enough doses can be harmful. In lower doses it won’t be and may even be beneficial. Certain types are essential to our lives. And of course from a technology point of view it’s incredibly useful.
  21. I think the time for that was 10-15 years ago mate. I chose to walk a different path.
  22. Looking at the Orbat, signals squadron were based at divisional HQ so yeah that probably explains why the village is so strongly linked to the signals.
