I think they’re a long long way from being communist. Liberal maybe but further from being commy than the uk.

I agree in that who the f**k wants to be stuck in steel pipe with a load of blokes for four months but the work they do is cool as shit.

Tbf he’s right… the Argentine military of today couldn’t invade a football pitch never mind the falklands!

First and only time a nuclear powered boat has engaged and killed an enemy warship in combat. And they did it with WWII era unguided torpedoes in favour of guided ones. The Royal Navy has quite an edge when it comes to real deal combat experience, in an age where very little happens.

Until they take delivery of their SSNs….
-
Astutes kinetic weapons are the TLAM cruise missile and the spearfish torpedo. Neither are nuclear and if you then say well they could fit nuclear warheads to them then I’d say well they could fit nuclear warheads to anything really. Only our vanguard boats carry nuclear weapons. We’re talking purely nuclear propulsion here. This is strategically important because SSNs have the advantage in blue water compared to SSKs which specialise in the littorals really. The Aussies aren’t buying ballistic missile boats. They want hunter killers.
-
Five eyes? The RCN only run SSKs and the kiwis outright ban nuclear propulsion and weapons. They’re left out because they don’t want part of it. I’ll guarantee all involved would love to have Canada and NZ want in at some level. Canada especially.
-
I think AUS would’ve been up for that anyway but for sure this strengthens that and fits right in with uk strategy of forward deployment. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is the kiwis stance on all of this. They have a less than minimum military force, are heavily dependent on trade with China and they’ve reminded the Aussies and the world that they’ve banned nuclear anything, in this case nuclear propulsion, in their territories. Now I love NZ but they’re clearly taking a policy of appeasement…

The french are antagonistic b*****ds but I do hope they find their feet. They’re a serious player in the Europe and indeed globally. There are states that make better allies and industry partners to the uk but few who have the same full spectrum capability. And the West needs that.
-
Make no doubt about it, this is very blatantly and clearly a reaction to China’s actions. This wouldn’t be happening if China weren’t a concern to AUS. It’s the only reason in fact. AUS are really signalling to the world they are going to stand their ground.
-
I think where you fall with the effect on the likeliness of conflict with China is weighted heavily by your politics. Does more stick hold adversary at bay or encourage them to attack? One of the concerns that I read was that it will encourage a regional arms race, with others now wanting SSNs and so further proliferation of high grade nuclear fuel. I’m don’t buy it if I’m honest. I’d imagine this deal adds weight to the UK brand in such circles as NATO.

In fact, as if by coincidence the MoD have just handed out contracts for the concept phase of the astute replacement…
-
Comparisons are always complex but in terms of ability to project power the RN is second only to the USN. But paying for that capability has come at the expense of mass. We lack hulls, redundancy and have let certain replacement programs slide too far. There’s a fair argument to be had in favour of a less ambitious but hard hitting green water navy. Kim makes a fair point to this end, I just don’t agree with any of his examples.
-
All of the astute class are either in commission or under construction. Supporting ships? You mean RFA or escorts? There’s enough to support two independent CSGs in a low threat environment or one in a high threat. But no one runs a navy expecting all ships to be operational all of the time. Two carriers were ordered so we could have one available at all times. F35 procurement hasn’t finished. I believe by 2024 we’ll be able to deploy an air wing of 24, not including those dedicated for other duties. And that still won’t be the end of the procurement. Theres many things we can

He can’t honestly have believed they would go any other way. The Rafal is a great multi role fighter, but it’s outdated now, or at least soon will be. Everyone with any sort of sensible budget is going for the lightening or funding their own sovereign fifth/sixth gen projects.
-
To be fair though they are actually very good at making stuff. They’re unreliable partners in projects but they have produced some good kit. But when we’re talking nuclear subs, the UK/US are the worlds best. Though again the french are probably every bit as capable with the reactors.

Funny you mention that, I was out with the heythrop last week and the covers were exploding with roe.

People are free to boycott whoever they want. That could be instantaneous and wouldn’t be seen as an escalation in the same way that a legally mandated boycott would. I think this is semantic. I’ve been explicit about the threat that the rise of China is to world peace for some time. But we kill our ‘enemies’. They are a potential enemy, a serious concern, the enemy of some, but the west aren’t there yet. We’re in competition with them and how that competition plays out will determine how much we come to see each other as enemies. I think ‘adversary’ is the term.
-
I think economic tactics have a place but if we just cut them off then not only does that hurt us but it very clearly says ‘we’re enemies and this is war’. I mean this is warming up to a second Cold War and a Cold War is only one bad decision from being a world war. Do we really want to be escalating to a full Cold War status? I think we need to remember that China aren’t our enemy. They’re a growing power with very different ethics and philosophies to the west and as such there will be areas of conflict but that doesn’t mean we can’t move forward carefully and peacefully. Cutting them of

I really suspect that’s an over simplification but I’m not aware of the events you are referring too. My immediate suspicion is that it was a legitimate deescalation, not at all treason. But I don’t know and frankly I’m not willing to find out. The point is nuclear subs are a strategic game changing weapon. An additional allied fleet of them is like gaining another queen in a game of chess. Despite what you are claiming I very much doubt that this general would be tipping off China in a shooting war. You’re oversimplifying things IMO. But again, I don’t know what’s happened and not really
