Crashed my van this morning on the way to feed for the keeper, so day started bad but i was in a decent enough mood as everything was alright really and decided to take my pup out. Walked to the next village to see some very good freinds and after a chat take the pup (7 months in a week) round their garden to reinforce the stock steadiness to ther chickens. Now after getting it into her head a good few months ago that chickens are off the menu she has been fine around them, usually just watches them and stays away from them. However today one of the chickens got into a bit of a flap up aga

My pup aint eating any advice ?
Born Hunter replied to wila's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Obviously going to a completely new home is traumatic for any pup so this is probably the cause. Once she settles she should start eating enthusiastically. Have you tried fresh minced beef? Once the pups eating, get it on a good barf diet. -
Anyone Having Any Luck With Foxes?
Born Hunter replied to dave1372's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Plenty about on top round me, can only put it down to the hard weather. Beating on saturday and managed to take 3 foxes all off of one drive, worked perfect! Saw 3 different foxes on the 2 drives before that. The terriers should start to account for a few more now. -

Must be a very nice way to hunt, your a lucky man! Nice hounds and looks a cracking day for it, with or without a result. atb -
A march may make a difference, but the last one didnt so im not gonna hold my breath, ill be there mind you, garuntee that! But! Surely a HUGE hare coursing event would make a few more arses twitch! Land owner would be completely inocent as he 'obviously' would have no idea or control. And how the hell can the police lock up god knows how many thousand coursers and beaters? If we all made a stand like this and was willing to make the sacrifice then surely we would be recognised for who we really are and not just a minority of 'working class dog men'. Even if all we did was a mock up, no do

Dear Ben Thanks for your e-mail regarding 'Countryfile' as broadcast on 6 December. I understand you're annoyed as you feel the programme reflected badly on hare coursing and dog men and gave an inaccurate overview of the activity. We appreciate your feedback and I can assure you that it's been forwarded to the production team. We feel that as hare coursing is currently illegal, we presented it as such. That being said, it's not for Countryfile to make value judgements on what should or shouldn't be a crime. As you feel strongly on this matter I've registered your comment

Agree. If the hunting act is at all reviewed, chances are it will be for the worst for the average dogman. But i suppose we can all hope for a future where we can fill the pot and control vermin as legally as a shooting man, the way it should be.

THORN IN SIDE FOR COURSING AND TERRIER WORK
Born Hunter replied to andri's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
This is completely off topic, but i get the impression that whenever the subaru lads have been doing their thing its always dog lads getting blamed.......... Well can i just say that not only dog lads are driving scoobys all over farmers crops! Our local land has been done by them and it isnt dog lads, foxes with big f*****g holes in them left to rot by the tyre tracks arnt the result of the sharp end of a bull cross! Like i said, off topic but somthing that hasnt been mentioned on this site yet! As soon as poaching in 4x4s is mentioned its dog lads that are imediately blamed. -
So you want a dog that will take fox and rabbit........ Almost all types if bred right will do that to some extent. Obviously a safe bet is going with a terrier blooded lurcher. If i was you i would be asking myself what else i require of the dog? Hunt cover like a terrier or less energetically (like sighthoundy types), big dog or small (depending on the land etc), high endurance for run after run after run or speed merchant that cant take as many hard runs, even coat type and feet? loads more to consider in blood than just wheather it will be able to catch and kill fox and rabbit. Hope this h

I tend to use the words endurance and stamina, lamping dogs should have endurance, coursing dogs should have stamina, thats all a bit 'black n white' but you get the jist.

I remember the odd dog that catches my attention on here, and yours was one of them, big line bred beddy grey if i remember right. Im bringing on a 6 month old pup (wheatongrey x colliegrey) and shes shaping up well, very interested in beddy lurchers though hence me remembering. Keep up the trialing pal, and let us all know how you get on next time. Same goes with the lurcher work. atb BH

Heres a few picks not long after i got her; And heres one at 5 months old (photobucket is playing up and i cant seem to get anymore on); She was 21" tts about a week or 2 ago, i should imagine shes not far off of 22" now.

I think the pups are 6 months old on the 27th of November pal. Mines very fiesty and stubborn but also very inteligent. Picked up all my training no trouble, just a matter of getting past her stubborness. Shes broken to most stock (havn't done sheep yet because i cant find any that i have access to) and ferrets, infact just today she found me a hob ferret out on a walk and was completely steady with it (hes now in my yard and gonna get some condition back into him, poor sod). Retreives very well once it clicked and got her used to the long nets. She can spot a hare fukin miles away and is a so

Out of slickdickos (think thats his name) litter? Ive got a bitch pup from him. Shes everything i wanted from her so far. The collie shines through in her training but the wheaton in her attitude. I have very high hopes for her.

Well done, i know exactly what you mean whean you talk about pressure to make the shot. Was with you all the way through that, few shots, nerves calmed and then you could shoot confidently. Do you still run that big beddy lurcher? Remember a thread a long while back where you compared to a bull cross.

And the big question............................... IS SHE SINGLE? Feck it, if shes not, who do i have to kill??? lol Fair play to the girl

Ive seen birds 'dispatched' with them game dispatchers still blinking and moving their eyes, very much alive, i dont rate them. Personally i prefer to give them a good wack on the head with my stick, no need for a preist when youve got your beating stick. But somtimes guns and other beaters moan about the stick method so i will break their necks without ripping the skin/tissue simply by twisting the head in one hand and the body in the oposite direction with the other hand, the neck completely dislocates and they still hang well at the end of the day. Humane dispatch is more a priority than wh

Anyone take there lurcher on pheasant beat?
Born Hunter replied to Rory4's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
As has been said, ALWAYS ask the keeper first, and as with gundogs if you dont trust your dog 100% in a particular circumstance (ie just walking past a cover crop/wood thats to be beat later) then just stick it on the lead. Many of the DIY and non commercial type shoots will allow it especially if a lurchers particular 'talents' will come in use. Just be sensible about it as with a gun dog and remember if your dog does f**k it up abit, its not the end of the world as ive seen many 'well trained' spaniels do the same. Predjudice against lurchers in the shooting community are rife, especially at -
Just shy of 30 rabbits with ONE ferret!!! Thats fuking good going by my standards pal. That little fella has earnt his keep! WELL DONE
