  1. thanks everyone, i just didnt want to go spending mine or my mates money without making sure we would get what we wanted.
  2. Thanks for your reply, I use hemp and spun polyester when i make nets, but i thought that 6z would be alright for a long net as its not generally used in cover. I just really wanted to know if its more acceptable as a long net becuase theres not as much crap to tangle it away from the thick cover?
  3. Ive been ferreting with friends for a few years now, getting my first 2 jills this summer and make my own nets My question is i want to know what you more experienced folks rekon to 4z and 6z long nets? Me and my ferreting partener want to invest in a few 100 yard long nets for next season as we think they would be handy, dont really want to pay the full amount so was going to buy 200 yards of sheet netting for each net and make them that way (plus i just like making my gear if possible, but would be absolutely gutted if my hand nitted long net got knackered). Is there anything wrong wit
  4. genuine question from a novice do you think the quarter whippet will have much affect on the pup, ie ability etc other than bringing the size down a touch?
  5. 50% of the genes from each parent is passed onto the pup, so theoretically its always 50/50. but its not as simple as that, you have to take into account dominant and recesive genes, so if the the farther passes on more dominant genes then the pups will throw to his side of the arangement and vise versa. hope this helps
  6. im sure gypo joe can sort you out, i get my net making stuff off of him, top bloke
  7. just love the countryside, when im not able to go shooting or ferreting etc then im off walking or cycling looking around the whole time. do a bit of fishing in the summer, go and watch the dog race now and agen and i ocasionally spend a few hours on a clear night with the telescope having a look at the stars etc wich i find a nice change.
  8. really good seeing deerhounds coursing as opposed to the usual saluki crosses (not that im against them at all). ive never coursed before so forgive me if this is a dumb question . is there any difference in the way a deerhound will course its hare compared to a saluki x or a greyhound? keep the vid clips coming
  9. very true frank theres pest control and then theres sport. sometimes people forget theres a difference, there are those who kill at any oportunity just for the numbers and then there are those who feel everyone should be sporting even when clearing land of a pest at the land owners request. We must respect our quarry but at the same time pest control is not a sporting affair.
  10. Ive knitted plenty of nets with and i dont find it as stretchy as most spuns i use the same mesh board for all my nets and i aint lost anything out of them i can vouch for gypo joes spun poly, its good stuff, really easy to knit with and holds the knots well. top twine
  11. Well done Frank I was out with my brother and a mate with his ferrets on the shoot for the keeper on saturday. There was plenty of rabbits but we missed about 5 due to unseen bolt holes under thich blackthorns. great day to be out, clear sky, frosty morning, and we even saw the hunt.
  12. Im at University, studying Physics. Im not to bothered what job i get at the end of it all, im just here becuase i like to understand how everything works and why, i wouldnt mind a job in something to do with balistics, just an idea. Before starting uni i worked part time at a racing kennels
  13. Will anyone be breeding any ferrets in the Grantham/Newark Area? Im on the look out for a couple of jill kits this year, so if anyone is would you be able to pm me? Thanks
  14. its a joke really, how the hell are they ment to enforce the law when they dont even know it?
  15. Sounds to me like the copper was a bit confused, i rekon hes got it all round his neck, game shooting is not allowd on sundays but i have never heard of a law that states ferreting isnt allowd. You can shoot rabbits any day of the week, so why not ferret em? So what happened then, did he just say sling your hook, so to speak or what?
  16. if you put up the area you live in maybe somone would be kind enough to show you the ropes worth a try
  17. a trammel net is the same as a long net but it has a 9inch mesh net on both sides aswell. when a rabbit enters the net it takes the 4.25 mesh net through a large mesh and forms a small pouch, much like a purse net. Interesting, anyone got any pictures? sounds like it would be a right sod to set up but in theory effective.
  18. For those, like myself, who dont know what a trammel net is could some one explain?
  19. no, the bloke im on about rents his kennels but i think he rents them off of some other racing kennels next door. Im not really sure. just wondered becuase i used to work at his kennels on a saturday, small world, lol
  20. do you know the greyhound trainer at rainworth?
  21. my S410 is fitted with a harris 6-9 inch tilt bipod, does the job for me on rabbits. although i wish i had got the next size up (9-13 inch, i think) becuase somtimes the one ive got doesnt quite clear all the tussocks of grass. to fit one you need to have a quick detatch sling swivel stud screwed into the forend of the stock, then the bipod is simply attached to that by a small clamping device (best i can describe it). its all really simple, just get your local gun shop to fit the stud for ya if you dont feel confident enough to do it your self, then just put on or take off the bipod depen
  22. i think im right in saying that a tumbler is an old type of running dog that just used to use its force of impact to nock the quarry down, whereas obviously the lurcher strikes at its quarry. The tumbler was less popular due to its high chance of injuring intself during the collision with its quarry. well thats what i understand anyway born hunter, what sort of size are they? havnt the slightest, what i told ya is just what i read. I think im right in saying that they are pretty much the same as lurchers just they have a wider chest with more elasticated pectoral (spelling)
