  1. you done the right thing mate good on ya. did you give the pup back or you still got it?
  2. wouldnt really want a picking up and beating dog working on a driven shoot, reason being that a picking up dog should stay at heel at all times until told to retrieve and a beating dog should spread out fairly far to put the birds up. you could have one do both but i wouldnt reccomend it.
  3. looks like a crackin mornings work. them dogs look in great condition
  4. cheers mate found it. and what about the bull breeds?
  5. i just noticed that the boar hunting and bull breeds forum isnt there anymore....what happened? there may be others missing that i havent noticed, dunno. where they deleted or something???
  6. cant offer any advise other than get insurance quick!!! hope all goes well.
  7. i suppose it is just a fur colour, but noone i know will work them or even give them kennel space ~ i think the chocolate colour is a sign of dodgy genetics...someone smarter should be able to tell you. ive personally never seen a goodun. you want to beat AND pick up? is this for rough shooting or a driven shoot? if its driven and you want to do both, get two dogs.
  8. pics would help the sale and where are you fella?
  9. i done alot of fighting sports growing up ~ karate, boxing, thai boxing etc but mate the only way you're ever gonna win is not to fear em...or shoot the fuckers!!! on a serious note mate, have a scrap (everyone loves em) but dont get yourself banged up with GBH, ABH etc it really aint worth it
  10. usually 3-5 gv rollies a day. at worst i smoked about 10 a day.
  11. sittin here in my free fleece, got a bag ill be usin as a gamebag and some other bits n pieces are on the way. i phoned them up and they said there was a free-postcode address or something like that, but they didnt send an extra parcel for me to post back with ~ so i think ill be keeping!!!
  12. nah dont think shes had a bang last week she chewed her face up abit on barbed wire but hardly seemed to notice.. no cuts or owt ill give it a couple more days and then dig deep into me wallet
  13. my retriever bitch has recently started limping on her back right leg it started3/4 days ago and ive decided not to take her to the vet yet as they would charge a small fortune even if it was nothing! a week ago today i worked her at my shoot and she was fine. took her out for a long walk/run on tuesday and at the end she started limping but i couldnt find and reason. this morning she was sick and not interested in her food (dont know if its related?) anyone got any ideas what's wrong?
  14. i know what you mean fella, most that ive seen have been, but when mine seems headstrong ~ thinks she knows better its ususally because she does. like if i send her out to retrieve a downed bird and shes marked another one she'll still pick up the one i want.. so no she aint really headstrong like that.
  15. personally i think that other than looking nice on the paper and selling for a higher price, a dog with good names in dont mean shit except its ancestors are good... if the dog is worth its metal, steady as a rock, obedient, healthy in all ways and keen then go for it fella. best of luck mate, sorry if that sounds really critical but there are so many dogs with "good ancestory" in the gundog world that are sold for a mint but are in themselves not very good. matt
  16. other than natural instinct to hunt and retrieve a very key factor is steadiness, if the dog isnt steady in the field i wouldnt personally breed from him - names in a pedigree mean nothing in the field
  17. the majority of well bred gundogs will do this, some better than others. a lab or a retriever for example will do all these things and be good at them. it depends what you want to do most, ie picking up or blood trailing, if you want a picking up dog a spaniel, lab, retriever etc would be your best bet, but if its mostly blood trailing then look into weimaraners, pointersn and so on.
  18. Purely out of interest lads n ladies of THL are there any gamekeepers on here? and how do you become a gamekeeper ie, do you need qualifications etc>? cheers, LL
  19. mate ive been picking up at shoots for quite a while and have seen some of the best labs, retrievers etc work, all in top condition - and they're are quick dont get me wrong, but lets be honest here, they dont match a bedlington in speed. i have been thinking about what these crosses have to offer though.. if anyone has any pics that would be great to see.
  20. well done mate, good for you! tough challenge did you get to do the tarzan course?? my old staff seargent popped his bollocks fallin off the rope crawl i think it was... and told us just as we were about to do the course!!! cold, wet, knackered, hurting, starvin hungry but happy as larry when you get through eh?!
  21. a cornish flag would be nice ian... we are in fact our own country
  22. lads im a mong i know... so sorry i left the camera behind!!! ill take a pic of the dog with a brace of pheasants tomorra. day went well, 167 birds put down including 1 pigeon...the gun that shot it said he couldnt see clearly...maybe thats why there were no more birds put down!!! my little bitch did really well, steady as a rock but when i sent her out was brill, straight to the bird (most were runners) and then straight back to my side. a good day had by all. matt
  23. if your anywhere near cornwall you can have mine cheap if you fancy - 4 or 6 gun i think.
