  1. Taken sika stags with pure saluki dog and 3/4 saluki bitch, not fast enough they were bred for gazzel stamina and centuries of breeding proper deerhounds were lost two hundred years ago! im not saying saluki x's cant take them, all im saying is that they were bred for smaller, lighter quarry. the old type deerhound, much like todays staghound is rare in this country, but deerhounds still are imo the best dog for deer. they have changed in the last few centuries, but the fact remains, they are still purposefully bred as ideal deerdogs. matt
  2. depends on the situation, i have seen a mates collie/acd take a roe in a small fenced field, but then again, even my old deerhoundx would occaisionally miss one. by no means are roe easy to catch. matt
  3. there is a dog purpose bred for this quarry....try the scottish deerhound!! if the deer gets a good start on your saluki/grey, even that wont have the stamina of a good deer, saluki/grey will quit if it gets a good kick in the face. a deerhound or deerhound x is the ideal dog - size, strength, stamina, guts and determination. you cant argue with centuries of dedicated purpopsefull breeding!! matt
  4. huskyxdobermannxbullxrottie would have to be the oddest dog i ever seen
  5. saw what i thought was one about 2 yrs back, dart across the road and over a hedge. was fairly light in colour, so i dont think it was a puma or anything like that. maybe lynx?? going back to the beast of bodmin moor thing, i beleive they think its a puma. dont pumas normally live in jungles???
  6. she looks a tad heavy in this pic but she is carrying a bit of extra fat with the lack of work due to heat! Oh I don't know, pair of heels and them legs would look quite nice!!! :11: :11: :11: i think id agree
  7. ive done a fair bit of research on feeding pups - ive got 1 aged 4 months. either bring them slowly onto 1 pound mince meat per day, mixed with some cereal (pre soaked), milk and raw egg. up untill about 4 months of age this should be divided up into 4 consistent feeds. if your puppy is over 4 months, then i would slowly switch onto a high quality puppy performance dry food mixed with raw meat. follow what it says on the packet in terms of how much to give, and then substitute about a quarter and give that weight in meat. ive found the best dry foodds to be: james wellbeloved pedigree iams.
  8. i have had alsations and dobermann, wanting something of similar, or more protective temperment, but that can also hunt well. im still fairly inclined towards ridgebacks, anyone got other ideas that woull suit what i want? matt
  9. IM not trying to "reinvent the wheel", all im asking is how are these dogs in this country. so maybe these dogs aren't as fast as a whippet etc, and i appreciate your input, but i want some more info on these dogs, comments like that do sod all. matt
  10. im not trying to add anything to the lurcher world, this is the breed that i like, and would like some feedback is all. im not after a heavier breed, but i prefer these to more typical lurchers/hunting dogs. if anyone has seen these work, please share your experience. matt
  11. ive done a fair bit of research on them, and ive dealt with guarding breeds before, so i know what im up against - i helped train my works guard dogs. they seem like the ideal breed for me, but i wanna know how they do on british quarry - fox deer rabbit etc as ive barely seen em on are natives. gb hunter could you pm me those numbers? where r u based? im down in cornwall. xmas would be a good time for me to get 1 as im training my gundog pup at the mo. matt
  12. hey guys, just want your input on this breed of dog as a hunter in the uk. ive only ever seen 1 work, so im hardly an expert. how are they on all uk quarry? thanks in advance. matt
  13. Depends what you are hunting.....a ridgeback is never going to have the speed to catch deer, hare etc. The ones I have seen would surely struggle for speed and agility with rabbit and fox?? hmmm... i dunno. ive seen them run daytime bunnies easily enough, and im sure they could run down a fox. you could be right on deer though, depends what type though
  14. go for ridgebacks!! they are plenty fast enough, and i have seen them work. class dogs, real spirit, as good as most lurchers i wud say
  15. jameswellbeloved puppy performance for my 14 week old retriever
