Thanks snap, I take on board what you are saying. I like the idea of a kit to get me started and the lee aniversory kit looks to offer everything for a good price. Can good consistant rounds be produced from this kit. I hunt mainly with a few range days so I won't be reloading massive numbers of rounds , will lee kits namely the presses start off ok or is the play present from day 1?

I am just about to start reloading 223 for foxes. I have my powder cert through and have dies that I can use in a friends press. Question is what presses do you recommend for ease of use, value for money. At this time 223 is probably the only caliber I will use. I have picked up 55gr hornady vmax bullets, federal primers and will use cases from federal rounds that have been through my rifle. I have been told vihtavuorI n130 powder will do my job. Does anyone else reload similar to the above, my rifle is 20" barrel with 1:9 twist

Help with rimfire ammo please
quicksilver replied to sibaldib's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not sure about the wind and moon effecting ferret effectiveness. I ferret regulary and the wind and moon are more relevant to lamping. From the sounds of your problem ferreting would be the safest option. -
it is a hard one to say for sure that it will engage, and again i can only talk from my experience with the DDB, i have seen them around other dogs and getting into tussles, they dont tend to have the staying power and are mainly only interested in a quick exchange. I also trained german shepherds years ago for proctection work and have seen dogs that look like they would kill people for fun not commiting to a bite. Until you tried you dogs at pigs i wouldnt bet money on them engaging boar.

if you have up to £400 to spend i would consider some of the mulit choke sporters, they are more flexible than a fixed side by side, this is just my opinion i never really got on with side by sides and always preferred o/u. For £400 you should find a good number of 2nd hand guns. keith

for my rifles i use a tactical gun slip, it opens out flat and doubles as a shooting mat when on the range or zeroing across the fields. it has a good level of padding, is long enough to take my rifle with moderator attached. I will have a look for the make of the slip but if i can remember correctly it was only about £45. keith

as far as i know the only requirement from a RFD persepctive is to make sure that you have the mod listed on your FAC for that caliber. I recently had to get a rifle screw cut, i was advised to get it proofed etc but as i wanted it for bunnies asap i opted to not get it proofed at this stage, the RFD has no legal obligation to make sure that the rifle and mod are proofed. This is my undertanding and i may be wrong keith

i shot two jackdaws with my rapid 7 in cut grass last year, i was waiting on the commotion settling and the birds returning when a buzzard landed on one of the dead birds. it had a couple of pecks and then lifted the bird and fly off. Not something you see every day keith

i was interested in the electronic fox call from the warrener, but i dont think it is available yet. Has anyone been in touch to get an release date for the callers. The remote control function appeals to me for locations where the wind direction is wrong with available shots, the fox may circle around downwind to sent the source of the call, with a remote unit you position the caller regardless of the wind direction and conceal yourself where a safe shot and wind direction work. i would be keen to hear from anyone who has used or had a demo of the new caller. keith

Cheap Batterys in the South Wales area
quicksilver replied to Hmr Hunter's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Agreed the firealarm guys will replace sealed batteries every year due to contracts , they will give you a couple so the batteries will last you a night -
Dave. this aint gonna help you mate ,but i remember my old mans first gun dog, lab,i was about 11 years old and the dog was not steady to fur,we was on a line walking a field with the gun club ,all the dogs in the line working cover, our dog had a rope on it ,tied to the old mans waist stopping it going to far ahead,a hare got up,the dog went for a full pelt chase, the old man laid his gun on the ground and immediately ran in the opposite direction, the whole line stopped to watch as the lab ran one way and old man ran the other, well as you can imagine the dog ,after this little incident was inst

mines going very slow, i seen more foxes in one night out with nightvision than i have all year on my permissions. since i bought my .223 i have only shot 3 foxes with it but i would say it has been a cheap season as far as ammo goes.

the matches wont work for what i want to do, i would like to construct a dummy nest in a particular area and decoy birds to that area, therefore i would like to use a recording in the immediate area of the nest. thanks keith

Anyone got a mp3 of a magpie call they could send me.

i used a hawk scope on a .17hmr when i first got it and found a similar problem, i couldnt quite get the positioning right and ended up selling it to a mate who liked it. possibly not suited for everyone, i even bought offset mounts for mine to bring the scope further back along the rail, made no difference. keith

i also shoot a steyr prohunter mountain, i dont have much experience with other 223 rifles but i find this a good rifle. I like the length of the barrel and the weight, it makes it easy to handle in the jeep etc. The set trigger is also a nice feature but takes a little getting used to. The twist rate is 1:9 so it will stabilise heavier rounds. hunter1 what ammo do you use in your steyr, i mainly shoot foxes and find my rifle likes 55gr federal, do you reload ?. keith

i use an old steel bin with a heavy duty bin liner, i clean the pens twice a day into the bin and then once a week when our bins are emptied i simply tie the bin liner and put it into the normal household rubbish bin, in our area the black wheelie bins are cleared for animal waste. i have used this method for up to 8 dogs without problems. keith

Good going , what's the night vision setup on your rifle. I have never used nv so I don't know about effective ranges etc but you're shot was 150m, are they clear at that range

i went out wednesday night despite the moon for a quick look at a new permission thinking it was a waste of time. i decided to go out alone and can honestly say that lamping, calling with an iphone and speaker and shooting at the same time is not easy, but a large dog cub came right in to about 30m before i got myself gathered to shoot him. Not quite in the same league as the 1011yrd rabbit being discussed but one less charlie all the same.

Having dogs stole is a terrible experience, I have had a total of three dogs stole on me over the years. I do hope the turn up safe and sound. Good luck

Normally you need to notify the airline in advance and the rifle must be in an approved airline case. The airline will normally have a section on their web site relating to firearms and ammo. If the details for the specific airline aren't available I would ask a travel agent to call them direct
