a good friend used to be a gun dealer in northern ireland a number of years ago, he told me a story about two mates coming into the store one friday evening after being out hunting. The shop was popular with Police men who would come in a stock up with cartridges etc. The shop was packed this evening and the two mates were having a heated discussion about the type of goose they had shot that afternoon. My friend asked them if they had it with them to which they added " its in the motor", so they fetched it in to settle the score, when they pulled the bird out of the bag ( in front of a few pol

thats exactly what i wa thinking dixy. my last batch cost £12.63 a box i normally pay £11.50 for federals but recently i got the hornady blue tips for £10 / 50 , there was a post recently where someone picked up some of the blue tips for £8 ish and found no difference. We normally pay a little more in northern ireland than UK mainland etc but £10 is a reasonably price for hornady rounds

what moderator do you recommend for this caliber, the gun is being sold with a shortened version of a t8 , the dealer wasnt able to recall the make over the phone but i am sure i can get it with a call back. keith

thanks Jamie i came across one advertised for £800 inc moderator, i have looked around a couple of firearms dealers and £950 seems to be the RRP, so it seems a good deal at the money. keith

hi i am thinking of buying a steyr .223 pro hunter mountain. Can someone tell me what the current mark / revision of this rifle, i spoke to a friend and he has the .243 MKII, i just want to check if this rifle is the current model, it is new. Also i would be keen to get a feel for peoples opions of this rifle especially the lighter 20" barrel. thanks in advance keith

i am also looking at getting a .223 for foxes. I looked at the steyr prohunter and it looked well engineered etc but a little pricy at £950. I dont want to pay more for a rifle than i need to as it means less £££ i can put into the scope etc. What are the views on heavy barrels and do they make much difference to the overall accuracy for field hunting. I also dont want to go down a similar route to the .17hmr where i bought a gun then had to buy a custom trigger and now am looking at extra £100+ to get it screw cut for a mod. So any information on triggers when recommending makes of

i normally clean mine after about 100 shots with a bore snake. I have only been shooting 17hmr for about 3 months so i would be interested in more experienced views.

golf course permissions
quicksilver replied to quicksilver's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Law change, i may be wrong but the law in northern ireland may differ slightly now, we used to have to specify on the FAC application the land we watned to shoot rifles over, recently the law was changed to be similar to shotguns, you can shoot your rifle on any land which you have the owners permission and which is suitable, the police now put the onus on you to make sure the land is suitable for rifle hunting. again this may not be the case but i will check it out. keith -
golf course permissions
quicksilver replied to quicksilver's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
we used to shoot very early in the mornings etc, the rabbits where easily spooked at that time, it was funny if you had a golf trolley they would stay put and you could practically kick them to death ( only joking) but if you looked out of place they were off. The owner of the course used to allow us to borrow one of their tractors that they used for ground keeping , the rabbits didnt pay any attention to it. We only shot air rifles on the course but often ran into the problem where a bit more range would have increased our bag considerably. keith -
just wondering if any of you guys shoot rabbits over golf courses, i used to shoot over a local golf course and the owner green keeper was only too happy to have someone try to keep the numbers down. We used to head out first light for a couple of hourse before the customers arrived and then again at dusk. There are normally plenty of natural back stops for safety. What is the law regarding discharging firearms early in the morning keeping in mind golf courses are often near residential areas. keith

thanks Ian, i have used a tasco 3-9x 56 for about 12yrs and i have never had a problem with it, albeit on an air rifle, which i use all year round ,day nad night.

the general consensus seems to be that without re proof £100 seems a but steep for just screw cutting, i am looking the details for engineering workshops that screw cut and i will see what prices i get quoted, postage may be a problem though

i love shooting the .17hmr cant wait for the summer nights to come in. I am on the look out for a good scope for my .17 and was wondering what scope you have fitted and what you think of it. thanks keith
-
doesnt include reproof as the guy said it wasnt a requirement , do you need to reproof the larger caliber rifles, if that is taken into account with Noels quote then my £100 is looking a little more expensive. what it includes is screw cut cap to protect threads dropping off the gun and collecting it again.

just wanting to keep them honest

can any one recommend an online store to buy additional mags for 17hmr marlin thanks in advance keith

i am looking to get a .17hmr screw cut and was wondering roughly how much i should expect to pay. I was given the price by a local RFD in n ireland which was quoted at approx £100, is this correct ? this does involve dropping the gun off in Drumfries to an engineering shop when the dealer is over. thanks in advance keith

i am going to have a good look around at the shooting show end of the month in nottingham, hopefully they will have some stalks to try the scopes on because holding them off a gun can make anything look ok. Are any of you guys heading to the show in nottingham keith

i guess when you look at the price of the scope and add up the features included in the price, the overall quality has to be reduced. Jack of all trades master of none springs to mind, lesson learned. keith

certificate and moderator
quicksilver replied to quicksilver's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Simple answer is NO, if a RFD knows the moderator is to be fitted on a FAC gun!! You MUST get a variation on your FAC. BUT, you can buy moderators for air rifles without a FAC, and some of these are suitable for rimfires, but if you put this mod on your FAC gun you are breaking the law....just get the variation, not difficult these days!! thanks for clearing that up keith -
when you apply for a rifle do you have to state on your FAC that it has a moderator, my rifle wasnt screw cut and i am going to send it off to get it cut for a mod but i was wondering if i then have to add a variation to my certificate. Will a dealer sell a moderator without it being on the FAC. keith

could you pick me 6 numbers for the lottery

i have bought the above scope to use on a .17hmr and so far i have had problems with visibility through the scope. When i mount the rifle i never seem to be able to get a clear picture through the scope not matter where i position my eye in relation to the scope. It seems that unless i take the shot as soon as i come onto the target the picture blurs and i loose the focus on the target. I shoot an air rifles fitted with a tasco scope and i know it is not my eyes that are the problem. any suggestions or opinions on this scope would be appreciated. keith
