    i use a 8.5-24x 50 leupold on my 17hmr, i bought it off a member on the forum. The reticle is the varmint hunter which is quite fine. For the hmr i dont think you need too many aim points on the cross hair due to the flat trajectory of the round. I like this scope and find it good for the rabbits. i agree with the argument around magnification but it is always good to have the option to wind it up a little if the need arises especially to check out the immediate ground at your target for stones etc, although mine is never off the 10 setting much. keith

    i recently got my hmr screw cut, you would be looking to pay around the £100 mark for the screw cutting and reproof more if you need to ship the rifle. keith

    with a 1:9 twist the rifle should be able to stabilise the heavier rounds but am i wrong in thinking that it should shoot the lighter bullets fine.

    Got my FAC back last week for the .223 and credit where credit is due i would like to mention R Macleouds for their service and help with purchasing the rifle. I got the rifle and T8 moderator for a good price and the shipping to n. ireland was only £15. I found Gregor Macleoud very easy to deal with and would recommend them to anyone.     thanks for the replies, i know that peoples opinions on breeds can be very personal and sometimes passionate . i have never really been drawn to labs or springers that is just my personal choice, i was enquiring to see if many members work weiraraners and if there are working lines available in ireland. I would agree totally with the comment that it is hard to find high % of working potentials as i have experienced this with working GSD's, i would be wary about investing time in a breed that would have a small % of working out.     last weekend we went out for a few rabbits with the 17HMR, out of 8 rabbits 6 were head shots and i was suprised to see a few of them kick and flip as though they had been hit with a bad shot.     i have a quick question regarding opinions on working weimaraners, i am after a breed suitable for rough shooting (rabbits and foxes) and retrieving pigeons and crows, the following would be my wish list when choosing a dog . good at working cover good retriever quiet in kennels obedient good around children possibly gaurd around the house I have kept working german shepherds, mastiffs and bull terriers for approx 10yrs and wont be put off by dominant dogs etc. in the winter months we hunt with hawks and a dog that is steady around the hawks and ferrets would be preferable.     i have bought a 223 in scotland from a RFD and i should get my FAC through next week with the rifle added to it. I live in n ireland and i will need to get a local RFD to accept the rifle from the scottish dealer. For my own benefit what is the process involved in this, i believe the standard charge for processing the paperwork is approx £40. I apologise if this is something that has been answered recently but a quick search didnt answer my question.

    i bought a leupold 8.5 - 24 x 50 off a forum member recently ( good scope) and i am currently using it on my 17hmr but i may transfer it onto the 223 if it finally comes through. I am keen to get a feel for the level of mag that shooters prefer for foxes, to be honest i dont imagine i will be shooting anything over 200m anytime soon.

    i had one of the first DDB in n. ireland about 10 years ago and i had wanted to try and get a workign strain again ( general gaurd work and hunting). I spent as much money looking at litters from smaller more agile parents than buying the pup (at that time bitches 2500 dogs 2000). I settled on a pup from a bitch that resembled a very large pitbull she had a lot of drive compared to most of the dogs i looked at, the pup was raised as a working prospect and not really solcialised with too many people because at that time they were rare and people would have made too much of a fuss of them.

    i have been shooting 17gr federals for a while with a marlin .17 hmr and found them to be ok. Recently got hornady 17gr rounds cheaper than the federals and i was impressed with them on the range and hunting. The hornady rounds have a blue tip on them. i would reccomend that you buy 50 rounds of a few different bullets and see what you think fire the best out of your gun.     i would apply for the cert with the make and number to follow, get a bill of sale from a RFD and put the application in. It would be easy for a firearms officer to simply say "dont bother" but possibly if you go ahead and make your application you might get lucky. A friend was telling me recently that he was thinking of applying for a FAC as his uncle had been given a FAC and he has a conviction for Armed robbery , my friend never applied for a shotgun as he thought it was waste of time given his record etc. I dont think there would be enough space on the form to detail his convictions.
