  1. As long as you have 2 nest boxes I cant see a problem, they should sort themselves out. One thing I would say is that you might want to look round for other homes for the kits because they can have a lot more than the 3 or 4 you want, and feeding growing kits is expensive..(I speak from experience here as once when I was a kid I ended up with 20)
  2. I found one like that 7 or 8 years ago, the dog made a put at her before realising what she was and she shot down a hole. I couldn't believe it when she came to me as I called her and then let me walk a mile back to the car with her in my arms. She was as thin as a lath and had an infection in one eye where it looked like she had been kicked by a rabbit, and she turned out to be the best ferret I've ever had, and the friendliest, it was a sad day last year when I had to have her put down.
  3. I've got a halfx beardie by him, coming up 4 now, and while he wouldn't be everyones cup of tea he suits me. (I'm 64 and want a quiet life). I was after a rabbiting dog and he has turned into a good ferreting dog but lacks a bit of pace for lamping. He's got a nose that would put some spaniels to shame and was ridiculously easy to train. He's taken some heavy knocks and hit wire at speed on occasion but so far has proved to be bulletproof, the only vets bill I've had was for stitching a pad He's very submissive to other dogs and although he chases things that bite back he makes sure
  4. I'd do a lot more at this particular place but nearly all the hedges need 2 people to work them and I haven't been able to get anyone who can come midweek to give me a hand. I never have that many, I think 7 is the most I've ever had, but I always catch and because I'm the only one working it and they are undisturbed there are always rabbits above ground, so the dog gets a few runs even though he doesn't catch many.
  5. Finally got out with the ferrets for only the fourth time this year today, and had a good time although I only had 4. As I walked the pathway along the first hedgerow the dog put one up that left him for dead then another that he caught, so I was off to the best start possible. He then put up another that I saw drop into what looked like a dead ender so I popped a ferret in expecting to hear a sqeal straight away, only to see the rabbit appear out of a pop up about 15 yards away in the field and dissapear. I switched the locater on and found the "dead ender" was actually a part of a
  6. Best advice I've ever had is never to lose your temper. There will be times when theres steam coming out of your ears but if you can control yourself you'll have a better dog in the end. I've been beating for the first time this year and am amazed at how some shooters treat their spaniels, if I did that to my 2 they wouldn't come near me.
  7. Mines 9 now and shows no sign of slowing up. I've noticed that his muscles aren't as defined as they used to be but I reckon he'll be good for at least a couple of years, hopefully more.
  8. I thought that. Unless the person holding him is a kid he looks as big as mine thats 25" tts. Nice looking dog all the same.
  9. Been giving mine a drop of milk mixed with warm water, they seem to like that.
  10. I lost my hob a few months ago and was struggling to replace him in time for breeding season. I was offered one that was "pretty big" that has turned into the biggest ferret I've ever seen, when he was snipped the vet weighed him at 4lb 12 oz His shoulders must be getting on for 4 inches across and it takes 2 hands to pick him up, I'd be constantly digging if I ever took him out. Luckily the 2 new jills are coming on really well, I've had them out a few times so far and they've each bolted at least one every time .
  11. Personally I wouldn't feed mine just one meat, I'd be worrying they were missing out on something. Mine get minced beef, tripe, chicken and lamb and seem to do well on it
  12. Almost certainly, and it will get worse as they come into breeding condition.
  13. I paid 65 quid a couple of months ago for my young hob at my local vet.
  14. Same as Gnipper I think you could have a problem after they have both mated. They seem to get very territorial after breeding so which ever hob you put back in the original pen will get knocked about by the other, you may end up having to let them live as pairs with the jills.
  15. I built mine whats basically a 9x6 aviary, open to the elements and with what was a lovely turfed base. 12 months later there's not a blade of grass left, it's like a swiss cheese and I'm thinking of slabbing it just to stop it looking so shite. The only thing stopping me is that the stinkers love it, and they are noticably fitter than they were.
  16. What is it that would stop you then Neil? I've got a Hancock half x too and am in the same boat, but if I ever have another dog it would definately be a collie x, maybe 3/4 grey, and I would take a punt on a Hancock if nothing else came up. is it the collie you dont get on with or just Hancocks stuff in general?
  17. Does the hawk ever make a mistake if the ferret pops up instead of a rabbit?
  18. +1, they insure all country sports and are way cheaper than a lot of the others. You get a discount if you mention thl as well
  19. I've only ever seen them on the head. Mine have had a few this year over the summer which was odd as they hadn't left the pen, I'm fairly sure they were in the hay I was using as bedding. I think one spot kills ticks too, but I've always just pulled them
  20. It always seemed a bit strange to me to split the section into 2 parts, it's not as if we have to wade through loads of posts each day
  21. Have you only got 1 jill? I've never needed to separate mine but I keep 3 jills so the hobs not constantly ragging on 1. If the hobs much bigger than the jill put a sleeping box in with an entrance only she can get in, then she can get some peace when she needs it.
  22. I'm guessing your ground is like mine, me and another member of the site spent over 3 hours crawling on our bellies last week trying to net under thorn bushes and nettles. We ended up with 3 and another 4 escaped from unnetted holes but thats expected I suppose. I'd love to go out and net a bury out in the open just once in a while and not come home with pins and needles in my hands from nettle stings..lol
  23. Well done mate, even just 1 is better than sitting at home.
  24. Off subject a bit but has anyone been to the parrot sanctuary in Leicester? All the birds are free flying and its a strange experience to see flocks of the things flying in and out of the place. I bet the areas bird tables are a sight to see.
