  1. the little metal bit inside collar has came off, you would think it would be a simple case of glueing back in place and away you go but no, its still dead as a doornail, this must happen often enough, anyone any ideas ? thanks.
  2. i don't have much experience of taking fox with running dogs, think I've only had about half a dozen, all taken by a straight whippet, who even at 19 1/2inches and 26 pound , must outweigh the majority of foxes( what is the average weigh of an adult fox anyway ?) and therefore had the physical advantages, even a couple of pound would make a big difference , he seemed to have a knack for pinning them with a throat hold and not getting bitten, now I'm obviously not advocating whippets or whippets crosses as regular fox dogs but they can and do take them. how big does a dog have to be to take fox
  3. have to admit we rarely go into double figures, 8 or 9 seems to be the norm, like most we don't take it to seriously either, we'ld probably get more if we stopped nattering to each other, we're not the quietest of ferreters. Luke, i'm a Belfast man and theres still plenty of spots within walking distance were you can pick a couple of rabbits up.
  4. sound advice already given, just keep an eye on their feet, particularly if using the bike.
  5. ] for adult dogs once a day and at what ever time suits you best, i tend not to feed at all on Sundays. under no circumstances would i leave food out all day, i don't get the thinking behind that at all, why would you not want your dogs to eat a meal at one sitting, its the natural thing for them to do.
  6. smashing looking litter FH. i always thought heartbreak used a Granitor stud dog ( pure bred )? i'm having a pup rom FH, so the beddy/greyhound for me.
  7. just curious, why would you mince them ? whats the benefit of mincing them, as apposed to feeding them whole ?
  8. hows did yous come up with the 3 weeks theory for the time to freeze ? thanks.
  9. you could try adding small amounts of the proper stuff to the tinned crap, then increase the amounts over time. i've yet to see a pup refuse meat on the bone though.
  10. to be honest mate, i don't see what the problem is, its natural. personally i like a dog thats eats like that, beats being picky.
  11. about 25 years,, i kept bulls which always put up rabbits during excerise, so got myself a whippet and reading Plummer books i suppose, wasn't fortunate enough to have any history of keeping dogs in the family.
  12. if you go down the 3/4 whippet route, around half that litter will be indistinguishable from purebred whippets, you might as well just go for a whippet and you could do worse. i've opted for a bedlington/greyhound first cross myself, they level out 20" to 23" , working whippets these days tend to fall in between that, so not much difference in size, with the beddy cross you have the added benefit of being able to take fox. good luck with your search.
  13. i wish everyone on these forums could disagree like Sandymere and Rainmaker, fairplay lads. your info is a bit over my head though but like Rainmaker i prefer my pups to be lean and a good barf diet does the job for me. a fat pup is just that and for me thats not the way to rear a canine athlete.
  14. looks a good'un Willie, best of luck with him.
  15. Booth did mate Nailus to his patterdales, some were to big , some weren't, they couldn't have been up to much though as the line wasn't continued, so he told me anyway.
  16. in a word Yes, sound advice from my fellow Belfast man Nook/Anna. or with drontal tabs at a £1 a go , i suppose you could always feed the whole rabbit fresh and worm regular, couldn't see it doing the dog much harm.
  17. i freeze mine ( kills the tapeworm), then feed the whole thing , guts in all. best grub in the world for your dog. 4 week old pups will strip a rabbit to the bone, so a 6 month old pup will have no problem.
  18. sometimes a change of bedding can sort this out, change the straw for shredded newspaper and see it thats helps, sounds stupid i know but its worked for me in the past.
  19. mate your on a good website for info here, go to the first page of this section and start working your way through it, any questions you have, will have been asked before, good luck.
  20. in the same boat mate, crawling under hawthorn hedges every week, hands in tatters. the only ground setts are play setts, with rarely anything in them. better than nothing but eh !
  21. i'm hoping to pick one of these up myself soon, looking forward to it even more after seeing those snaps of yours, thats a smashing pup mate.
  22. i don't know how long the term Lurcher has been used to discribe running dogs, maybe it was used in a different context in the 1800's. if it was a dog fight, you can bet the dogs were bull bred, plenty of small bulls in that weight class in them days.
  23. a mate use these recently, smashing nets, delivered in a couple of days. http://www.jbsnets.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=325&products_id=4773&design=&dm=http://www.jbsnets.co.uk/shop/&d_num=&osCsid=7dee90ee5fe995025adaca3c3f4ffc6f
