  1. A brilliant offer, not many would. TC
  2. Myxi is not a man made disease. Its a natural disease of the South American rabbit, an animal which interestingly also displays a level of immunity to the disease. European rabbits taken to South America lacked this immunity and died . This gave the boffins food for thought and ,yes, they did experiment with different strains and we all know the result. But, the spread of myxomatosis proved the old saying that "less is more". The first strains of the virus were simply too virulent and killed rabbits before they lived long enough to spread the disease. Milder strains were the answer th
  3. Wrong!! Mixomatosis is a disease found naturally in south America, it was imported from there and tested in France, where some rabbits escaped and so the virus was spread. As a virus it has the ability to mutate exactly the same as the common cold virus. So that is how you get different strains of the virus. I believe there are over 40 different strains of the virus recorded. TC
  4. I used to hate cricket, And he is running up to bowl the ball...................and........... he bowls the ball....thought it was the most boring game on earth. I was laid up for a while and started watching it out of boredom (the irony). Richie Beddows started explaining what the bowler was trying to do, it sort of came alive a bit for me then, the more I got into it the more I understood what was going on. Love it now. TC
  5. I get half a dozen duck eggs given to me every week. This week I made a mash with the yolks of the duck eggs. It was out of this world. I boiled the potatoes as normal added a little cream and rough mashed them with a fork then added the yolks of two lightly poached duck eggs, and just roughly stirred them in. Served it with runner beans and bacon. It was really, really nice I will be having that again, no problem. TC
  6. One of my mothers brothers was in Hiroshima after the bomb had dropped and he took some photo,s the devastation was unbelievable. TC

  10. The roots of legumes, beans and peas contain nodes that fix nitrogen in the soil. Leeks need more nitrogen that any other element as you do not want them to flower just grow leaves. Same with cabbage, but not broccoli or cauliflower. TC
  11. Get some leeks in, you can buy them ready to plant. Salad stuff, over winter cabbage. if you buy the variety Duncan they will give you cabbage for Xmas even sown now. A good idea would be to plant some green manure ready to dig in that will give you plenty of nitrogen for next year. decide now where you want to plant your leeks next year and sow some broad beans there at the end of October, Aquadulce are a good over winter bean, then when they have finished next year cut the tops off and leave the roots in the ground and plant your leeks there. 12. hahaha that worringly looks like my garden! is that a stack of creels i see? I tried answering you earlier but the wife's laptop kept crashing every time I started to type. That was the yard at the top of the garden where all my fishing gear was stored. Do you like my flaking bars? (the down pipes) Work a treat. spread them out about 3ft apart sheet underneath to catch the droppings, slowly pull the net over and the odd shake would clean most nets of seaweed. Even 2 week old crabs would drop out She was a 28ft double diagonal Teak on Oak displacement hull ex lifeboat. Before I b
  13. As with everywhere there are pockets, if you can find them. Drop into a pocket and you can do well. TC
  14. Looking at the spalting on the wood I would say it's beech. TC
  15. Thinking about it, it may have been a day I had no money for diesel for the big boat, so gone out in the punt and fished some shallow rocks with crab. Fished the tide in and ended up with about 8 to 10 fish between 4 and 9lb. If it is, those two would have been the two biggest, the largest would have been 9lb god knows what the other weighed. All I know it give me wages and diesel for the large boat. TC

  19. Fleas and mosquitoes both carry mixie, with the fleas they have to come into contact with another rabbit or pick them up from a warren. With the mosquitoes they do not, they can travel miles and no contact with any other rabbits is needed. TC
  20. fecking seals. I had been out one night, and decided to drift the flood in as it was a beautiful morning. So I shot all my nets out, turned the net bin upside down and lay across it holding the line to the net. I must have dozed off as I was woken by a seal that came up by the side of the boat and snorted, the water went all over my face and with the noise, water and opening my eyes to see a seal about 2ft from my face. I shat myself. TC
  21. I used to do a bit around Eardsley, as you say always have a few though out the Winter. The latest it has hit here recently was about 7 years ago when it did not hit till November. I managed odd rabbits that year from around me. Best year I have had local for about 20 years. I reckon the mixie kills at least % every year here, and it could be due any week from now on. I used to work in a large works and in the summer evenings when working afternoons I would take a walk around the grounds in my break, it was nothing to count 200+ rabbits. Same walk in September and I would be lucky to see
  22. Two years long netting. I lamped for years and got along fine, then when I started long netting I learned the truth. TC
