DM80 on my .17 hornet
-
It's not a matter of "reading comics" you need to weigh up what you are going to use the rifle for in the main and make an educated choice based on that information. Decide what the likely quarry is going to be and the likely range. Decide what bullet weight you require then have a look at some ballistic tables which will give you a good idea of the amount of bullet drop you will encounter at your chosen ranges. Because .308 or .270 suits some random geezer on the interweb doesn't mean it will suit you for your application of it. The fact most folk at bisely have .308 means absolutely noth

That might be a difficult sell as in the UK it's falls within the remit of a big game calibre based on energy. Whereas I can see an outside chance against boar, I think you'd really struggle to get any grant in the UK against deer. That's not to say you definitely won't, just that it might not be easy and there's a high chance of refusal. I know several people who have them for deer in the uk.

.270 is a necked down 30/06 so a bigger cartridge than .308 it is bound to be a tad more lively. The .308 is the same cartridge as a .243 but with a much bigger heavier projectile thus nowhere near as flat shooting as .270. Depends on what ranges you are likely to encounter aswell.

.270 or 30/06 imo, i bought 30/06 as it will flatten anything i want flattened.

Well thats exactly what happened not far from here last year and that turned out not to be a random robbery aswell. The blokes wife turns up from the school run with the kids and enters the house. Minutes later four masked men burst in with knives and baseball bats. They proceed to threaten the kids with the knives demanding she open the gun cabinet. This cabinet was of the electronic lock type and she didn't know the code. Luckily for them after several guesses she stumbled on the code and the safe opened. They stole a large amount of cash and fourteen rifles and shotguns plus ammunit

As i have said on another forum, something just doesn't sit right with this. Why only take two guns? Why take some shooting trophies when they are pretty worthless, Why smash your way in when you could have broken in when the occupants are out and taken your time about the robbery? I think he has probably pissed someone off and this is a bit of payback.

I tried 53grn superformance in my Tikka T3 1 in 12" .223 when i had it. It didn't like them at all, some bullets hit the target sideways. I changed to federal premium 40grn vshock and they where bullet on bullet accurate.

I use a Berretta extrema2 and have done for a lot of years. It doesn't matter whether i am using 28grm on clays or remington 3 1/2" on the marsh it just works and works well.

The cheapest dedicated scope that will do your job is a yukon photon. None of the pulsars are any good in daylight i,ve had them. After the photon is the Drone pro x10 but is very expensive at £1700.

Tikka all day every day!

Just for balance, i saw a 3/4 grown cub shot in the centre of the bib at 100yds and run. On the same night a full grown fox was shot between the eyes at 70 yds and the bullet richocheted off. The fox was semi stunned but came too fairly quckly and ran off. Although in certain cicumstances you will kill fox with an hmr i personally won't use one i would wait till had something else in my hands. However it's not a problem i now have as i binned the hmr and bought a .17 hornet instead.

Probably Been Done Before But 223. Or 22-250 For Fox ?
ianm replied to Bigad's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ha ha. I guess that depends where you shoot them! It's all about mistakes and margins. While I agree in theory that more ft-lbs should be more forgiving if you do cock up the shot..... In reality, my opinion of that is, its simply not true! That is based on the fact that I've shot a 220 swift and .223 week in week out for over two years.... both using 40grn Nosler BTs.... There is a considerable speed difference between the two with the swift pushing over 4000fps (slightly faster than the 22-250).... But having seen hundreds of foxes shot with both calibres using the s -
Signed, thanks for that.

Simon Vann and BASC should suit each other admirably, they are both clueless! -
Howa 1500 Compared To Tikka T3 In 223
ianm replied to Marctitty's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
What a load of crap, Howa/Weatherby, are superb bits of Japanese engineering, made to very close tolerances,as is most Jap engineered stuff,if they were not good quality, lots and lots of rifle builders would not use the Howa action as a base for their custom rifles. You are obviously not an engineer or you would know the difference. Rifle builders use them because they are a cheap source of components which they are going to machine to tight tolerances. Most so called rifle building is no more than trueing up the faces and lugs. A chap i know is ceracoting Howa's by the load on -

Replacing A Silencer On Ticket?
ianm replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The best strippable reflex mods i reckon are DM80s. I am gradually changing all mine over to these. They are very well made, light, seriously quiet and about half the price of most of the others that don't work that well. -

Which is why i have black polymer stocks on mine, the two supervarmint ones i have are very good and tough as old boots.

Doesn't really matter what they choose to believe they "allow". The Police uphold the law, they do not make it! The fact they may not "condition" it on your ticket is neither here nor there. If you shoot a fox with a rimfire rifle it is legal. If they take you to court for shooting a fox with a rimfire (which they won't) they would look pretty stupid ignoring H.O guidelines which all Police forces claim to follow. Proving effective range limits for R/F would be a nightmare for them, otherwise they would stipulate them. I've shot plenty of fox with LR and HMR and if common sense is use

The bloke on ebay might be "pricey" but they are proper walnut as opposed to boyds polished plywood.

I have a .17 hornet as my rabbit gun, it is fox capable up to 200yds if you place the bullet properly, but i wouldn't reccomend one for you for what your intended purpose is. I would go .222 upwards but most likely .243 with a DM80 mod and using 55 or 58 grn rounds, nice and quiet with a very flat trajectory and plenty of energy.

For an end can i would go with an Ase Utra for an over barrel it would be DM80.
