  1. Well done! cubs can cause havoc around poultry, i know from bitter experience.
  2. I can buy .17 hornet rounds for £16.95 for 25, however reloading for it is on a par with .22 hornet. The factory .17 hornet rounds are very good aswell. I had my barrel shortened to 20.5" and the factory stuff still does 3,600fps in it, home loads a bit more.
  3. Good shooting! you gotta love the .17 hornet, so versatile.
  4. Agree but it, the 17rem may be based on the long forgotten sadly 222 rem magnum. The .17 rem is indeed based on the .222 rem magnum as is the .204. It's realistic effective range according to three people i know who own one is 250 yds on fox and up to 400yds on crows etc.The .17 hornet is a realistic 200yd fox gun and up to 300yds on rabbits crows etc, i have the .17 hornet instead of the hmr i used to have.
  5. 212 paces with a wmr off hand is some shooting, when you paced it out did you have your shoe laces tied together.
  6. That's an interesting theory but I'm not sure it's supported by evidence. If that is correct then a moderated 300winmag should be quieter than a moderated 308win? My own suspicions are that most mods are not designed to perform optimally with the 17hmr. They are either designed to perform optimally for 17 centerfire rounds or for 22 rimfire. The 300 win mag may be as quiet as 308 IF the moderator manufacturer did his job properly and dialled out all the muzzle blast, It would be an interesting experiment to undertake. DM80 makes all his mods calibre specific, nothing generic
  7. The best mod i have seen on a hmr is an over barrel DM80, however my .17 hornet is quieter with a DM80 mod. I think the problem lies with the bullet speed. At 2,400fps ish it is a relatively fast rimfire round but slow in comparison to c/f bullets of the same calibre ( 3,600fps upwards). As such i think the extra time the bullet takes to reach it's target is the reason it produces a prolonged sonic crack.
  8. Nice rifle but .22 hornet?zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  9. Can't wait, which side are you on?
  10. Elliot, hornets are "so very last month" now, we have moved on to 6.5 x 55 v 25/06, do try to keep up!
  11. Motor cars kill a lot of deer every year but i wouldn't buy one with killing deer in mind!
  12. I know someone who bought a 6.5x55 on the advice of an "expert", he is now sick as a chip and looking to go back to 25/06. Hardly surprising is it Not surprising at all when you actually think about it. The bloke in question was buying a new merkel rifle and wanted it in the same calibre as his sako 25/06 but they didn't do that calibre. Anyhow the "expert" suggested 6.5x55 as a suitable alternative as they are very similar according to him. So the said rifle was ordered and subsequently delivered. He soon found out it was nothing like his 25/06 and was mortified to see ho

  14. Your local rfd can order them now through Edgar Bros. You look on Boyds website for the stock of your choice and note the product code. Give the code to your rfd and he can order from Edgars, takes approx six weeks to come, my mate has just done this.
  15. I would imagine the op has a rifle by now, this thread was last year.
  16. I hope it turns out well for you, i would just worry about what i would do if it didn't like factory ammo.
  17. Hell of a good shot for a .22 lr with subs, well done!
  18. Is that Dave mercer on this forum?? What sort of price do the mods come out at?? You have a pm
  19. Your choice of rifle is a good one also the optilocks are a good idea on a Tikka. I would however think again about an ase utra mod. They are efficient but unbalance a rifle too much for my liking. I get Dave Mercer DM80 to make all my mods as he makes them calibre specific, over barrel and can be stripped to clean. I always have them made so that they come back to virtually touch the end of the stock. They weigh the same as a jet z cqb but the weight is dissapated over a longer area. They are very well made and cheaper than ase utra.
  20. Yeah it goes down to experience when you don't have the land and I don't have enough so far even with paid days they say you can use the estate rifle. More bullshit from a licensing authority, don't stand for it. You only need show good reason and you have, it isn't their decision that you use an "estate rifle". You need your own rifle so that you can become familiar with it. You need to practise with it so that you are confident in despatching the intended quarry confidently. You aren't going to get that with a rifle you have just got hold of that morning, infact using a rifle that d
  21. Say it again and close the thread walshie, job done! Mind you don't keep bumping into furniture with them blinkers on Dobbin!
