Help. Just Found This Little Fella In The Garden.
J Darcy replied to trigger2's topic in General Talk
I always have a large stock of 1, 2 and 5 ml syringes in, as i do get handed quite a few fledglings over the course of a spring/summer. One little tip, is that the crop of a bird is slightly on its right hand side, that helps with fast feeding. -

Trigger you did your best matey, it's a shame people like to give advice without any knowledge of the subject in hand. Let's hope he makes it to Africa... I was handed a house martin just the same as your's a couple of years ago. He was superb, had him in the house a few days, getting his flight muscles going, building him up, having lots of flights around the front room. Quite an amazing experience it was. For me anyway. The next sunny day that came along he was taken back to the site where he'd been picked up and away he went.....It felt good, and even though I know that it was 'against nat -
Help. Just Found This Little Fella In The Garden.

Hi, the parents will NOT feed that chick. It has fledged some time ago. The bird is a house martin and I've reared one before. In this weather there's every chance he will now die....they cannot cope with wet weather well, especially as young birds. I'm sure he appreciated being warm and dry..... -
This is the size of the opening. Looks to be about 55mm. Where's the common sense? And the DOC 250 is also passed for rabbits, so there's not going to be many rabbits getting in that gap!

Although the trap is legal for mink, the opening to enter is so small only a female would eb able to fit i would say. Does anyone know if it is legal to increase the size of the entrance hole to allow such critters access or would this be contravening the law? What a crazy no-common-sense situation

Finally got my hands on a DOC, the 200, and first impressions are of a very powerful, well designed, well made trap. I have posted a few pics here just for those who haven't seen the trap before. However, for some reason the effective use of this trap is somewhat restricted by the crazy legal stipulation that the New Zealand designed tunnel is used only. This tunnel was designed to stop kiwi's getting caught. However, there are no kiwis in the Uk, so i cannot understand how this crazy 'box' has been allowed to become a legal stipulation. Surely you would think that as long as a tunnel to st

Its the same old same old, the place has been here 10 year, we've seen them come, we've seen them go... drama queens, bully boys, piss heads, idiots, braggers......... but then we have genuinely good members, who help others, are polite, respectful and no bother at all, ever.. I've lost count of the amount of topics like these that pop up , that are pretty pointless to be honest. If someone doesn't want to be on here anymore, even if all they have to do is not login again, let me know. I'll remove them, not a problem...This has happened countless times............guess what happens, they se

I'm so glad I'm no longer a Mod. After nearly nine years I asked Ian to take me off the Mod panel and it was a good choice. The thing is, that being a Mod is no fun, and you're constantly being asked to sort of playground fights, bickering and just fools being awkward in general. As well as a raft of people saying "Delete me", then a week later they're back on. And, here's the thing, if anyone, no matter how 'anti-mod' they were was made into a Mod they would do exactly the same as what the other Mod's do. I've been on here since it started, and there's always ups and downs, and I've seen a

Southern Hawker In Flight (Emperor)
J Darcy replied to PINNACLE's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
I suppose some people can, but there's no way i can tell the actual species by larval form. It's simply too detailed for a layman like myself. It is not luck they all emerge within a day or so of each other, it's something called Evolution. The larvae are triggered by the time of year, i believe linked to both water temperature and the length of day. they clamber up on verticle stems and then emerge. It's a great thing to see... -
I have since ordered from them and they are very good.

Southern Hawker In Flight (Emperor)
J Darcy replied to PINNACLE's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Tanks or ponds. I used to mix and match a bit, as i thought it was unfair to keep them in the tank for too long. Always trying to ensure they were returned into the garden pond before they emerge. Which they all did within a day of each other at the crack of dawn. A nice spectacle to witness, a true wonder of nature watching a dragonfly emerge..... -
Southern Hawker In Flight (Emperor)

Its a male Emperor matey. They are great, I've raised a good few of these over the years as well as a pile of Southerns..... The darter is a mature male Black darter, well, it's a bit difficult to be 100% from that pic, but thats where my money would go .... -
Yes...bricks and peanut butter.... :tongue2:
-
Don't go giving away all the Trade Secrets........... OOOps.....my bad.

Make a tunnel out of a few bricks ,and i bet you have him straight away. Peanut butter on the brick directly above the trap plate is pretty much deadly.

Best Dslr & Lens For Action Shots?
J Darcy replied to Terra Firma's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
What body are you using these days with the King Dongs of glass? I use a 7D. It is my choice of bodies. I have canon gear, but if i had t0 start again from scratch i would probably go with Nikon. -
I wouldn't be worrying about his feet. They are what they are and there's nothing you can do about it. I've seen a good few dogs with feet like that and there's nowt wrong with them. In fact, i 'd go as far as to say that those feet are maybe less likely to receive injury than the 'tight' greyhound types. All that 'tight' foot stuff is a load of bollocks made up back in the 1950's before that most durable of hounds was used in the lurcher- the saluki. i remember I once saw a dog course a hare in late summer up and down a road, then back onto rock hard baked ground, then onto the road again. t

He's hit 'teenager' stage. IMO don't do anything with him for a couple of weeks, only try to exersise him in places theres no other dogs. Go back to basics with the recall, leaving him hungry and feed him on the recall. he will soon snap out of it. Once you've got his recall bang on, do a few 'carries' with him on the lead. Avoid doing any of this in the sunshine. Good luck.

Very very nice find.

On mange, Advocate isn't 'all that'. I was speaking to a vet last week about it and there's been numerous cases where Advocate has been tried with mange and yet the mange was still present. Some vets don't have faith in Advocate. Don't overlook good old Stronghold.
