  1. There are a few people working this cross, they seem every bit as good as the half bull/grey for their job, and to me they look a tad more robust, the deerhound compared to the grey is generally bigger, bit stronger, and better coat for harsh conditions...... just a few things buzzing round my head recently
  2. its easiest to use the normal sized fencing netting, and putting two layers on. the bottom layer dug well in with an outward facing flap of about 12''
  3. I know lads who have kept sealyhams for years, but they are struggling to keep bloodlines going, outcrossing to russel/sealyham types now and then (DABBER, that one looks like a russel blooded sealyham to me?) I hope the breed survives as a digging dog, as the ones ive seen have been decent dogs by any standards.
  4. bOn an estate I work on there were two dogs killed by adder bites in the same year. One was a labrador, which was bitten out wildfowling, taken to vets, but died few days later from liver failiour. The other a farm collie, was found dead in kennels in the morning, swollen face, it was assumed the wind pipe became swollen overnight. Ive had several close encounters between my dogs and adders, but they do have a natural fear or awareness that they are dangerous. My terriers have killed a few now, but they are unavoidable in my area. I am considering trying your methods of training with future
  5. look mate, im a keeper/pest controller and i want the fast result most of the time... but it just dont work like that all of the time. Anyway, its the bad ones, the real f**k ups, that stick in the mind and I for one enjoy hearing of such events.
  6. Because thats not the question bud. Im wanting to find out the latest time at night (once dark) people have finished digging. The game is completely different once it gets dark (you dont know if it has bolted, you forget where you put gear etc etc). I realise 3 hours is not a long time, i have dug far longer in the past than that, the earth was underestimated and looked like a kick of the turf. FTB i used to dig at night all the time, as I was busy with other jobs through the day. lost a fair bit of gear... had the torches die, but a good lurcher will help. I dont mind it, if the
  7. My old dog Scrumpy did 3 days in an old quarry. But the worst dig for the same terrier was a dawn till dusk one on the hill, in the rain, ive never seen a terrier so weak when lifted, as well as me and bftb's(cuz)the ground was super hard going. Bloody hard work, and a nightmare at the time, but one that will not be forgotten.

  11. Good luck watchman, ive spent the last season entering a bitch, mainly ferreting and daytime rabbit hunting, and she is now working like a veteran. Im so pleased. It seamed that I did very little in the way of training with my bitch, simply took her out plenty and she did the rest.
  12. Hi mate, another clear out... well done, and good numbers! Hows the wee pup doing? Any pics of her?
  13. In my patch, they travel right accross miles of fell ground, visiting the hill loughs for trout etc
  14. I tried it myself when i was young and foolish, bred my decent working jill with a wild hob and created utterly useless workers!!!
  15. I think your thinking on the right sort of lines mate, but be certain that you need to be careful and very wary when buying the new pup, make sure its from an honest source, and that it is bred from dogs that you would be happy to own yourself. Put the time in with the pup, and train it well, then enjoy the hunting
  16. If you do breed the cross, please keep us informed, il be keen to hear how it does in the field
  17. nice one..... looks 18 - 20 lbs to me but might be the photo lol great looking fish though

  19. Im always putting my arm into the tube, but luckily ive found just the ferret or rabbit but ive bolted stoats and foxes. Ive come accross some angry wasp nests, as i also ferret gardens etc through the summer.
  20. Ive stopped on most of my sporting permission... just pest control jobs now.
  21. insane price for a book lol, but if people pay that then go for it!
