  2. execellent reply toolebox, you certainly seem to know what your talking about, iknow it hit new zealand and australia, years ago, you will have experienced it big time, heard it jumped species into kangaroos wallabies, dont know if thats true though.lets hope we never see the rabbit gone forever.
  3. this rhd is a strange disease, a few years ago, it wiped out the majority of rabbits in my local area, these past few months the rabbits have been making a good come back, with no mxyi as yet, even got my self another ferret to have a go this season, but a mate of mine was on land only about 15 mls away, and tells me hes finding dead rabbits lying round, with no visible injurys, seen rabbits with it pissing blood from the nose, and in convulsive states, was told that once rabbits contact it they usually keel over and die within about 4hrs, but stand corrected.
  4. dont mess about mate, get him to the vets, better safe than sorry, could be atrapped nerve, or pulled muscles.
  5. now the seasons starting up again, couple of the local butchers, were asking me could i supply them with a few skinned rabbits, over the winter months, seems to be good numbers this year, prices werent to bad they were offering, but been told by a few lads that you can no longer sell them direct due to this track and trace movement in animals, think game is diffrent if your a licensed dealer buying from estates and shoots, mate told me he tried to selling woodpigeons, but got told b7y a butcher he wasnt allowed to take them, this is all new to me, as i havent sold rabbits for a few years now.
  6. this young hob ,i got here, is as mad as the day is long, handle it 3 times a day, alright once you get hold of it, buthas a fair old go at your hand and spits and barks when and you try to pick it up, very skulky and nippy, not like a nice easy going white ferret, these type are like the ones that abbot bros from norfolk used to breed in ferret courts years ago, still im going to perserve with it, can see their very lively and active never stays still, only when its fed achunk of rabbit.
  7. bloody hell, keeping hares like that, aint right, most lads keep ferrets in bigger hutches than those poor buggers are housed in, reckon they must be breeding them for the table, or releasing them for coursing, could be wrong, what nationality is the guy doing commentary sounds french to me,
  8. BRED AND KEPT ALBINO AND POLECATX FERRETS, FOR YEARS,HAVENT BOTHERED TO KEEP ANY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS SINCE RABBIT NUMBERS STARTED TO DECLINE, BUT THE OTHER DAY, MATE OF MINE OFFERED ME A EU POLECAT KIT,SO I TOOK HIS KIND OFFER ON,COMPLETELYNEW TYPE OF FERRET TO ME, ANY OF YOU LADS TELL ME WHAT TO EXPECT FROM IT WORKWISE, TEMPERAMENT, AND WHAT THERE LIKE WHEN FULLY MATURED, WOULD THEY BE ANY BETTER THAN THE TRADITIONAL FERRET,THE BLOKE I GOT IT OFF DOESNT WORK THE PARENTS, THINK THERE JUST PETS, BUT AM LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING HIM OUT LATER IN THE SEASON AND SEE HOW HE GOES.
  9. EXCELLENT WRITE UP BOSUN 11 SPOT ON WHAT YOU SAY, IN MY BOOK, IF YOUR DOGS HAVE GIVEN YOU THEIR ALL OVER LONG YEARS THEY STILL DESERVE GOOD FOOD, A WARM BED, AND DEVOTION FROM YOU,IF YOUR A TRUE DOGMAN, THEY DESERVE IT, TILL THE TIME COMES TO SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR LOYAL AND FAITHFUL COMPANION, MIGHT SOUND SOPPY TO SOME ON HERE, BUT TO ME MY DOGS ARE JUST NOTSOMETHING TO BE DISGARDED WHEN THEY GET TOO OLD TO WORK ANY LONGER, BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION.
  10. GOT TO AGREE WITH YOU GILBEY, IM NOT A CHOP AND CHANGE MERCHANT WITH MY DOGS AND NEVER HAVE BEEN, ALWAYS FOUND THAT BEDLINGTONXS AND WHIPPET TYPEXS WORKED WELL EVEN INTO OLD AGE, IF ENTERED CORRECTLY ANDW0RKED AND FED PROPERLY MOST LURCHERS WORK TIRELESSLY FOR YOU EVEN AT A GOOD AGE, MY OLDEST LURCHER IS A DEERHOUNDX AND IS 11 YRS OLD,STILL LAMPING HIM LAST WINTER AND HAD AFEW WITH HIM,CAUGHT A RABBIT ONLY YESTERDAY ON A GENTLE STROLL, OTHERDOG IS DEERHOUND X AGAIN AND IS 6YRS OLD AND TO ME IS IN HIS PRIME, WILL RUN HIM THIS WINTER, THE DEERHOUND DOES HAVE ONE OF THE SHORTEST WORKING LIVES OF

  12. HI DARBO, JUST BEEN LOOKING THROUGH MY COLLECTION OF BOOKS, FROM THAT ERA, IVE DEFINETLY GOT VOLUMES 1 AND 2 OF THE JOURNAL OF RUNNING DOGS, EDITED BY PHILL LLOYD BOTH STILL IN GOOD CONDITION, THE ONLY OTHER BOOK THAT I HAVE IS A 1991 RUNNING DOG YEAR, THINK IT WAS WRITTEN BY GARY HOSKER, A NICE LITTLE READ,CANT FIND ANY JOURNAL RELATING TO 1990, MAYBE THIS IS THE 3RD ONE YOUR THINKING OFF, WAS ALWAYS KEEN TO BUY THOSE SORT OF BOOKS IN THE DAY, THAT 3RD BOOK WAS PUBLISHED BY ARGENT BOOKS, WHERE PHILS WERE PUBLISHED BY FIELD FARE, SUPPOSE THEY COULD BE WORTH A FEW BOB ON EBAY, ATB.

  14. WAS WATCHING HIM SUMMERTIME FERRETING,ON ADE IN BRITAIN SERIES, NEVER CAUGHT A RABBIT, BUT ENTERTAINMENT VALUE, WAS SPOT ON, NOT,HE USED TO PUT ARTICLES IN EDRD, USED TO HAVE A PURE SALUKI STUD CALLED BRIGHORN, AND RAN ABITCH CALLED KEIRA, IF MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT, DIDNT HE GO OVER TO WHIPPETS AND USED TO DO WRITE UPS IN CMW, THOUGHT HE JACKED IT ALL IN ON HEALTH GROUNDS YEARS AGO, BUT PROVEN WRONG.
  15. I WISH YOU ATB CHARTS, WITH YOUR NEW PUP, ITS SO REFRESHING THAT MEN LIKE YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE DEERHOUNDX GREYHOUND, AS A TRADITIONAL WORKING DOG,AND LIKE ME YOU HAVE A REACHED AN AGE WHEN LOTS OF LURCHERMEN HAVE THROWN THE TOWEL IN, IWAS IN TOUCH WITH THE LAD, WHO BRED YOUR PUP WITH HONEST INTENTIONS OF SECURING A DOG PUP, BUT ALAS IT HASNT WORKED OUT FOR ME THIS TIME, AS THE TRAVELLING,BOAT FARES, AND OVERNIGHT STAY WOULD HAVE BEENQUITE COSTLY,ALSO TRIED VARIOUSCONTACTS TO GET PUP TO FERRY FOR ME, BUT SADLY TO NO AVAIL, THE LADS I SPOKE TO ABOUT THE PUP WERE GENUINE BLOKES, AND POS
  16. , like you say baker boy,how the hell can theyget planning permission for building on a site with eighty mine shafts on it,planning all over the place is corrupt, case of who you know, who you drink with and brown envelopes, seen developers, building on flood plains, old disused town tips, places where ordinary folk have been knocked back, even on appeal, but housesbeing built on same land a few years later, farmer friend of mine, wanted to build small retirement bungalow in a corner of his field, wasnt allowed, few years later thers a massive housing estate there now, certain parts of britain now un
  17. thanks for the reply. intresting to hear what your experience with this type was, sounds like the type of dog i would certainly have a go with, have you got any pics of him, do you know if mark is still breeding or has he moved onto summat else, strange you never got another from him, or did you go for another type of lurcher, atb.
  18. beautiful pup, coud certainly find room in my kennel, for such a fine example of the breed, youre a lucky man, bred the right way. atb
  19. this cross , i reckon is one of the most popular peddled lurchers going for crazy prices, and most bred from crap parents, very popular with the horsey parade, get the right type excellent little dogs for ferreting and mooching, used to be a lad called flatcap that bred them a while back, think he may have packed up now, mate of mine had one of his breeding, made a good ferreting dog and busher, fraid you will have to dig deep in your pocket, and take your chance if you decide to buy one these days, atb in your search.
  20. worked and drank with lots of the irish boys over the years, from the north and the south of ireland, still great friends with lots of them, worked hard and played hard with them on road works, scrap and tarmac game, even in the fishing industry when we used to barrell herring, but even today, sometimes i encounter lads especially from the south and i cant understand a word they speak, lots of them still use the gaelic lanuage, but saying that all the boys ihad privilege to rub shoulders with would have helped you out to the end of the earth , and would have given you the shirt of their backs,
  21. Great photo phil, just like i remember them, and how they should be, never starved back then in 70s and 80s, running that type of deerhoundx, thanks for the memories never to be forgotten.
  22. Heres hoping i may get this thread back on track, at a loose end and lo and behold, i came across an article penned by old phil in theold shooting news feb 1987, price 65p, the article by phil was entitled THE DEERHOUND INFLUENCE, and what a great write up it was on the true working deerhound x, and thetribute and debt thatphil owed to his old straiin of greyhound/deerhoundx sheepdog hybrids, and especially his old bitch lucy, as old phil said she seved him well and deserved her retirement,if phil reads this he may kindly post the pic of himself and the brace of these hybrids that accompanied
  23. lovely, strong looking animal, did you breed him your self, whats the deerhound blood in him, and how old, certainly my type of dog, love em,job to find good decent working lines these days, think most of the decent breeding of doxhope and ardinglass are now well and truly diluted, used to be a lad on here stonewall, who had the genuine doxhope blood in his dogs, the deerx grey has sadly declined these last few years, not world beaters, but always served me well, and the type of terrain that i ran them on, atb.
  24. tom burns, now that is certainly a name from the past, must be a damn good age now, must be as old as hancock, used to breed deerx greys under the name of alba long dogs, if memory serves me right, surely he wont be still breeding these days, went of the scene like your self years ago, another lad that was breeding this cross afew years ago but didnt reign too long, was andy barron from gisburn, some of his stock didnt make too bad a dogs.
  25. love that pup very nice indeed, think i seen that litter on pets 4 homes, afew weeks ago, roudabout £450 price,if id been abit closer, would have jumped at the chance of one, always a breeding i had alot of time for,atb with it.
