  1. rabbits are very thin on the ground round my area, got to work hard to find them these past few years, mxy and rhd hit them hard a while back, out lamping when storm barra was at its peak, caught 4 clean healthy bucks, worked 20 large fields, and seen the grand total of 7 rabbits, same run about 5 yrs ago would have seen a catch of 20-30, dont think rabbits will ever get back to good numbers, due to all the diseases, predators, and over hunting, sad day when the humble rabbit is not seen on the english countryside
  2. what you lads using for bait, tried all sorts in multiple catch trap, having some sucess with peanut butter, also using fens and single catch cage traps, like the look of these black cats, but as yet never tried them, wheres best place to buy them.
  3. anybody fixing these locators, these days, i know that jim chick used to do them, before he sadly passed away, there was another chap mick dadd, but ive heard he packed up doing them, if you guys know of anybody else doing them, it would be most helpful, havent gone on fb as i dont do it. cheers.
  4. been saying the same for years now, and said it on this forum before now, the last bedlington lurcher i had with genuine working bedlington blood in it, was in the early 90s, got him from les robinson in brigg, bred out of newcombes blue, also in the blood was amy, norman, venus, andj the late john piggins lena, les used to be agood friend of george newcombe, dont know if les still works bedlingtons, these days or not.
  5. theres an old boy lives close to one of my perms, farmer lets him run a few fields, where theres no stock, hes got a young english pointer, totally out of control, comes back when its ready, too much dog for him, but boy has it got some stamina in it,neverstops and can fair shift, watched it the other day winding and flushing pheasants, on good sized fields, thought to myself that bred to a lurcher might produce a good daytime sort of dog, just my way of thinking, damn shame this dog is wasted, in knowlegible hands would be a good enough worker.
  6. have you seen this first hand gnipper, and what were the symptoms, know it happens with merles, with deafness and blindness, but never heard of it occuring with ferrets.
  7. am i missing something here about the breeding of silver jills to silver hobs, and silvers to bew, can someone enlighten me, as to what problems will and can arise from this breeding, let me just say ive bred, worked, and kept ferrets of all types and strains for 60 yrs, never heard this stated before, look forward to any replies, iwill live and learn, asi in the past always produced good stock, from any type of ferrets used, but some were a lot better than others, never had any health problems.
  8. going to have a shine out tonight, perfect conditionswith the storm raging ,and moon well down, hoping to get a few decent runs, and get some dog and ferret food, for freezer, just going local and hope there is a few lying tight in this wind, atb to any of you lads that are going to venture out,go safe.
  9. dont think he is in the best of health these days, he packed up doing ed\rd magazine a while back, heard nothing of him since, shame i miss the magazine, just finished reading cadno book of his written a few years ago, didnt find it too bad a story.
  10. nobody mentioned old phils books yet, in my opinion some of the best writtenand photographed by a man that has truly been there and done it for years, long before a lot of the lads on here were even born, an execellent writer.
  11. maybe read some of plummmers books, but have a goood handful of salt, and not just a pinch, whilst reading them, but like most lurchermen just starting out years ago, they were all that there was at the time.but a lot of jackanory stories written by him.
  12. just a question, but at what age would you guys reckon a dog is past his best to line bitches, iknow that if the dog has produced good stock, you get get straws from him to use at a later date,ie when stud has passed on or is very old, would a dog of 10 or 11 yrs old still be up to the job, just asking.
  13. good to see that your fortunate enough to catch numbers like that, a great days sport, way rabbit numbers are round me at the minute,id be lucky to catch that amount all season.
  14. like yourself tats, reckon it going to be a hard winter, while walking dogs these past few weeks, the holly bushes in my area i absolutely laden with berries, never seen such flocks of fieldfares in years must be in the hundreds, absolutely hammering the hawthorn berries, seeing more woodcock than in past years, and plenty of greylags, whooper swans and woodpidgeons round the wetland areas, wild life and nature signs will tell you plenty aboutthe weather if you take time out to observe it,but lets just wait and see do these predictions come true, were due a good hard snap, might kill some of the v
  15. its the outer toe front right,by from what you lads are saying its about £500 mark, doesnt seem too bad, but most vets are just rip off merchants, whether it be working dogs or just household pets, suppose i might be better taking some sort of insurance out .
  16. what prices our vets charging to amputate toes on running dogs these days, got a 5yr old lurcher here that has a reoccuring toe injury, each time he runs then goes lame, told the last vet to take toe of completly, but charged me a wedge of money, and only strapped it up, and arsed about for months, dont know would it be worth getting dog insured and job done, or just paying for it from the hip, what you guys reckon the best way to go. atb
  17. such a wise, sensible, and true statement, spoken by you sir,my sentiments exactly ,as you have stated the rest of us were hung out to dry, atb.
  18. theres firmness when dealing with animals, and theres brutality, my uncle used to break horses for driving and i learnt a lot from him,and that knowledge is still with me today, lots of so called dog men and i know numerous, used to train with the boot and a metal bar,i let the animal know who the boss is, but beat it severely and you will lose all trust,no bad dogs just bad owners, seen the actions and the results off this type of training over the years, lots of broken spirited animals .
  19. in my opinion a lot of the hunting brigade always classed themselves as a cut above ordinary working dog lads, the class divide, them and us,they came out on top after the ban despite all the marches and rallies hyde park, and where did it get the coursing lads, nowhere.
  20. just seen video footage on bbc news, didnthear what it was all about, but it shows a loose horse, belonging to a woman member of the hunt, being badly mistreated by this woman whogets hold of it, and promptly proceeds to start laying the boot in on it, and lashing it round the face and head with the reins, no need for that sort of treatment to an animal, more fuel for the antis and rspca, all types of hunting in a very serious state at the moment, with out this kind of behaviour, from people who didnt give a toss about the dog lads when the hunting ban came in.
  21. often thought about getting one, for bushing and doing a bit of ferreting with, not had any experience of seeing them at work first hand though, talking to a few lads who have worked them, been told they are excellent at the job they were bred for ratting, but for bushing they told me, that plummers will shy away from real heavy cover, sustain lots of bleedin from ears and skin is not great on them tears easy, would they be steady enough to train to work with ferrets and maybe a bit of gun work.
  22. like you jok,it would be in the early 60s, when as ayoung man, ifirst seen rabbits with this horrible disease, they would be thin as rakes, deaf , blind, and puss discharging from their eyes, and the sores on their bodies, when you first seen them you would think that they were cow pats lying in the fields, they were that bad with it that the dogs wouldnt mouth them, seemed a more virulent strain in those days, rabbits over the years have got abetter resistance to it , but its taken along time, this shite that is now vhd or rhd, is having a devastating effect, far worse than mxy ever was or ever
  23. you want to get that stitched, or stapled up, depending on when injury a occured, looks like a barbed wire gash, nasty, keep it well cleaned and rest the dog, probably take a while to heal. atb
  24. if any ones intrested in a jeff burrell tumbler lurcher, theres an ad for them in this weeks cmw, price tag £500-£600, might satisfy some of your doubts, about what he breeds.
