    Very good thread .Lads that that work the soil places will have no conception of rocks me included .Tbh would scare the crap out of me entering a dog into any place with rock over the top .Hats off to those doing it .

    Breed standards and kc aside,if the dog aint worked its the owners fault and no one elses .If a dog becomes too valuable to work it is a mere shadow of its ancestry .No reason whatsoever why conformation cannot go hand in hand with work .To value a dog for its looks only is what ruined the Dinmont .Work has its own conformation .

    Best of luck in whatever you choose mate .Many on here and across the country will have endured the same but come through it .My gripe is that youngsters in general these days are quitters and i labelled you as such .Again good luck.

    Not the unscrewing to worry about mate,if damp gets in thats game over as the connection relies on the battery touching that copper piece in the body of it .Damp shorts it out ,tape water proofs it in theory but tape well.I still use one of these on occasion .

    Seen it twice before .Once when a rabbit rolled down a bank infront of us dead and again when one bounced from side to side on an old railway cutting .Both had been bitten base of neck by a stoat unseen .Very efficient predators

    Personally ,my pet hate is the dog that wants out when the light floods in ,has been the end of a few otherwise useful dogs .

    I know it's not necessary to peg him out but when I was a kid and went digging with me dad he always pegged a pup the old man used to say ya cant teach em but ya can.educate em if its in him mate there willl be no educating

    Its not necessary for a dog to see another grafting mate ,not at all .if it wants the life you will be digging him sooner or later and you can both learn along the way .i cant stand the hole ending ,short dig some are so used to as it does nothing but you may be goaded into it with your dog tied nearby .Walk the land with him on a lead and try at a few easy places ,hopefully ,that he will ,may mark when hes ready .Pulling on the lead in the mouth of a hole is all i require from a young un to let him off into the darkness .

    Concern yourself with what the parents have done and not who bred it .Although borders are getting thin on the ground ,there are as with everything ,some that are the real deal .Every now and then someone will post about a day out with borders and its those lads you want to pester .Forget breeders ,the puppy churners as they do nothing for terrier work .
