    Might seem contraversial,might seem that i know it all lol but im a pretty good judge of whats an easy earth and whats not .For years there was a place near me that people said was undiggable,was split level and a dog killer .ive dug it along with others on here between 25 and 30 times and no more than 1.2 deep .The piles of spoil are menacing but every tube levels out just inside ,a sure sign it aint dipping away .Knowing the local substrat is paramount .On the estate near us if there is shale kicked out no more than 1.6 but if theres lumps of sandstone then its an all dayer .Clay colours var

    Seen it twice before .Once when a rabbit rolled down a bank infront of us dead and again when one bounced from side to side on an old railway cutting .Both had been bitten base of neck by a stoat unseen .Very efficient predators

    I know it's not necessary to peg him out but when I was a kid and went digging with me dad he always pegged a pup the old man used to say ya cant teach em but ya can.educate em if its in him mate there willl be no educating

    Its not necessary for a dog to see another grafting mate ,not at all .if it wants the life you will be digging him sooner or later and you can both learn along the way .i cant stand the hole ending ,short dig some are so used to as it does nothing but you may be goaded into it with your dog tied nearby .Walk the land with him on a lead and try at a few easy places ,hopefully ,that he will ,may mark when hes ready .Pulling on the lead in the mouth of a hole is all i require from a young un to let him off into the darkness .

    Concern yourself with what the parents have done and not who bred it .Although borders are getting thin on the ground ,there are as with everything ,some that are the real deal .Every now and then someone will post about a day out with borders and its those lads you want to pester .Forget breeders ,the puppy churners as they do nothing for terrier work .

    To the OP ,take time to get your young dog to a standard before thinking about another mate,from experience.To the Plummer breeders .....Would any of you be interested in gifting a pup to a digging home with a bit of ratting .Not a wind up just wondered.
