what they are teaching our children in school about fox hunting
Aled replied to timjim's topic in General Talk
How times have changed! Many teachers in the rural area i was brought up in (and still live) are active shooters and fishers, as were/are our scout leaders and football/rugby coaches! My wife is a teacher and farmers daughter she would not teach that. Crikey keep us posted i'm interested. Cheers Aled -
Great news to start the weekend. Cheers Al

I'm a rugger bugger so i know quite a few of them who shoot and/or fish. Dean Richards, Sir Clive Woodward, Lawrence Dallalgio (England), Gareth Edwards, Scott Quinnell (Wales) Doddie Weir, Budge Poutney, Ian Smith (Scotland) Rob Wainwright has already been mentioned. With the exception of Ian Smith (although he may of as well) all have talked about their fieldsports in rugby, shooting or fishing magazines, on TV programmes, or pre match programmes. Finally one more cricketer Robert Croft, Glamorgan, England, and Wales enjoys both shooting and fishing. Give me time i'll probably

Its worth asking the question, why hasnt Horse & Country channel looked at re-running some of Jack Hargreves programmes or Hugh Falkus Self portrait of a happy man, great counrtyside programmes for people like us?? Cheers Aled

HI MC I started fly tying using a book called Fly Tying for Beginners by Geoffrey Bucknall, however the book was very old when i was given it! I would suggest that you get either books by Bob Church or Bob Carnill. The best place to look however is Coch y Bonddu bookshop. (They are on line put Coch y Bonddu Books into google) they will have a huge selection there. However i really learnt to tie flies at a class, the Fly Tiers Guild could possiby help you out with a class near you. Two things to remember, one is scruffy fies can and do catch fish (my surface lures are very scruffy but they'

Nice pike MC and good to see you back on the river. Best stress relief going imho is a bit of fishing. My season kicks off on April the 1st cant wait to get back at them sea trout. Got to sit at the vice and tie some flies first. My son is a little bit too young to take yet but in a year or two i cant wait to take him to the small streams in the Brecon Beacons where it all began for me, my Father and my Grandfather. Most Welsh rivers start on the 20th of March, for salmon and sea trout, and closes on the 17th of October, however the Tywi starts on the 1st of April. Brown trout usually starts the same time with one or two exceptions such as the upper Teif which opens on the 3rd of March. Brown trout season closes on the 30th of september. I think some English rivers open in February, and i do know that some Cornish rivers close for salmon on the 15th of December. There are regional variations. All salmon caught in England and Wales before the 16th of June must be returned to the water. Tight Lines A

I don't know where to put this so here's as good as anywhere! It was inspired by the stories i read about good working dogs being nicked. This is a true story! In the depths of wild Welsh Wales back in the late 40's there was a shortage of good quality working gundogs, because none of the local roughshooters could afford to buy one. They used a mottley crew of mongrels of different sorts. However there was one bloke, the squires gamekeeper who did have a good working labrador dog, he was given one as part of his job. The gamekeeper was a creature of habit, he worked hard 6 days a week, h

Similar subject, anybody read Chris Newtons biography of Hugh Falkus, called Life on the edge? Hugh was one of the first "angling stars with Salmo the leaper, and several fishing books. Turns out he was not quite the person we hoped he was. Cheers Aled

Managing a community regeneration project in a deprived area. Have been since i left Uni 11 years ago. Have enjoyed most of the work i've done but struggling a bit at the moment. Keeping my options open. Job has entailed working in some lovely rural areas marketing the counry walking and fishing, so its had its up side, also worked in Cardiff. On the whole its OK. Cheers Al

OK here's my pennies worth. I didnt like studying but did not mind school, somehow i got some GCSE's. After leaving school i went to college i got a HND and a degree. College was totally different to school, i studied a subject i enjoyed (Rural Management ideal for a countryboyo) passed exams, and got through. However to get a job after college was not easy, but i did. I now manage a regeneration project in Wales and my job is OK and the salary is OK. HOWEVER, the guys i know who are making the most money and living a good life are the brickies, carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc the guys

Nice one Rolfie, its difficult to hang up the gumshield....i do however plan to stay involved with the committee, and hopefully my son would like to play, he'll have the chance to if he wants to. Missie i've always played club rugby with local clubs and thoroughly enjoyed it, teams that win together sin together! Must say though, rugby and shooting dont always mix both very much winter sports so am looking forward to giving up rugby to some extent as i will then get more into shooting. Wife has said "no dog until you give up rugby!!" Fair enough i suppose. Forgot to mention my passionate

I saw one in Carmarthenshire about 5 years ago, had a real shock, went home and checked up in a book to make sure that i'd seen what i thought i'd see. Without a doubt a Roe. Havent seen one since. Cheers Aled

Its interesting that many of you have put fishing down as an other hobby, i do a lot of fishing and regard it as a fieldsport. Each to his own . Outside fieldsports i enjoy spending time with wife and son, i also play rugby for a local 2nd XV too old for the 1sts! Although in retiring at the end of this year...probably! Also on the club committee. Sing in a choir occasionally, and try and do a bit of mountain biking to keep fit. Cheers Aled

I'll tell whats wrong with you all, is you're all really jealous that these guys get paid a lot of money to fish cracking places and catch loads of fish and you all want to do the same........(OK guys put your claws back in i'm only joking! LOL) One thing i will say is its quite nice that some TV at the moment is of interest to me as there is alot of boring stuff out there. Secondly i've not met any of the charecters under discussion so i until i do i cant pass judgement on their personalities. Tight Lines All Aled
