  1. Depends how cheap you can get the spray paint, but you will get about 2 cages to a can.
  2. I Like the can of fosters..............a classic that Rolfe.
  3. If you are there to remove rabbits.......then what difference does it make if they are little-uns or big-uns as long as they are culled humanely. I take many hundreds if not thousands of young rabbits every year from my contracts without the slightest hesitation. Rolfe.
  4. The hob shows little interest because he doesn't percieve the kit as a threat ..........the jills are just following their natural instincts and mothering the little fella..........just keep an eye on them for a while they should be fine but be prepared to move the kit out at the first signs of distress. Rolfe.
  5. Under section 161 of the highways act 1980 in England and Wales it is an offence without lawful authority or excuse to discharge any firearm within 50 feet of the centre of the highway and in consequence of which a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered. ( What the law is in Scotland i don't know) In Scotland, it is a crime at common law to discharge a firearm anywhere in a culpable and reckless manner even though no actual injury is caused. The essence of this crime is the wanton disregard for the saftey of others. Rolfe.
  6. SHEEP DOG PASSING by Alan Chesterfield He said "You needn't wait if you'd rather." and called the nurse. "It's for the best." he said. Whose best I'd like to know. It's all very well for him, all glass and stainless steel. "It will be very quick." he said and filled the syringe. "There will be no pain." he said. and clipped the hair above the vein. Holding her, she licked my hand and understood: anything would be a piece of cake after nights of blizzards on the moors, to pinpoint buried sheep, and rescue lambs. Or, to a whi
  7. Excellent job Rolfe, but have you used the Vauxhall leaf green Glenn uses, it's a great colour. It annoys me terribly when people nick stuff, snares, moletraps, anything, and it'll just hang in some shed gathering dust, yet if you were to kill them, it would be you that went to jail, sad really. Too be honest Ian..........I used some green i had left over in the shed........but the green Glenn uses is just about the right shade.
  8. I am just about to start a grey squirrel control contract........i't an annual visit.......but last time i trapped here some cages went missing. I can only use cages on this job for reasons i won't go into but.......i have sprayed up a few cages to help hide them from the view of the general public that also have access to the site.......! Plain galvanised cages will catch just the same.... but by colouring them green it helps them blend in better to the surrounding area. The same principle as the wire tealers on rabbit snares, these can be left galvanised and they will still catch......but d
  9. My lurcher bitch is an absolute natural for jumping hedges........she once cleared a similar hedge much to the amusement of STORK off the THL............he's 6 ft 5 ins and she cleared him and the hedge as well Haven't got a picture of that particular jump........but here's one of her clearing some railings. Any one got any good tips for taking pictures of dogs jumping?........my digi-camera has a 2 second delay and i always miss the shot
  10. The rough coated dog jumping the fence is a dead ringer for one of my rabbiting dogs....
  11. If you enjoy the carpentry then good luck to ya Donks..........But really you just need a three sided tunnel with restricted access at the ends designed to take a Mk 4 or MK 6 Fenn for most situations. I use them with Mk 4's at the base of favourite trees (oak usually) unbaited for foraging squirrels. Simply bed the Fenn into the ground and sit the tunnel on top........I try and disguise mine from two legged thieves also with a few twigs and branches.

    up this morning

Can't beat being out and about first thing in the morning........i was out at 5.30 the other morning and it was spectacular, birds singing and really warm..........shame i was working checking rabbit wires or i could have appreciated it more.....! you need to get out more Tracey, Rolfe
  13. You don't want to set them too close to the buries........you want the rabbits to hit them at speed really.....but sometimes you have no choice but to set them near. So you must judge each situation on its merits. But as a general rule i would set them a little way out if you can 10-15 yards or more is ideal. If you set them too far out you will have a lot of running about to do. Rolfe.
  14. PM Geordie............he'll sort you out.
  15. I set 25 breakaways last night (unmodified as yet).......was due to set 100 + wires but some prats were enjoying the evening sunshine and having a barbeque......which f**ked it up completely I had 11 rabbits.......one chewed twine escapee...... and one breakaway opened up......I am certain this was pulled open by a fox looking at the evidence..........the remaining wires were untouched.
  16. Checking the wires this morning and came across this.......Many people will tell you rabbits can't chew through snare ties.........Oh yes the can.
  17. Yes RIP Fred.............I met him a few times and he was always the perfect gentleman..........always had time for youngsters as well............he and his writings will be sadly missed. Rolfe.
  18. If you had allready caught a rabbit in the trap, how did the fox get in there aswell???? The door to the cage can push inwards.........but has two lugs on the bottom to stop it being pushed outwards......as is common with most rabbit cages of this type. Badgers are another frequent catch also.
  19. Nice pic Rolfe, I had a rabbit in a cage trap last week, and something had been tumbling the trap about to the extent that the rabbit's nose was bleeding, the trap was upside down when I got there, and the bale twine it was tied to a bush by was stretched like a guitar string. I find metal T bars are really effective in pinning cages to the ground........about 18 inches long is OK for most cage trapping situations.
  20. Always expect the unexpected when checking rabbit cage traps.......this fella simply couldn't resist the rabbit caught in the cage. It is a common problem when cage trapping rabbits, this is a fairly old picture and i now pin all my cages to the ground using a metal T bar to prevent them being rolled around or carried off by foraging foxes.
  21. Ditch.......you must adopt the old red indian trick and get down on your knees and smell the damn thing. It will often identify the culprit. If it is in a place that also catches the sun......my gut instinct would say fox.....if you have any in the vicinity. Many many times i have happened upon a fox layed up in just such a place soaking up the sun. You can discount badger deffinately........never lay up during the day outside.....and too busy at night foraging. Cat? possibly it could be.......but i'll take a stab at old Charlie......! So........nose to the ground next time.......and if i
  22. Just a quick picture i took yesterday of a fox run just out from the fence line. She has just started running the fence line to check for snared rabbits and also to drink from the water trough at the end of the hedge. I have watched her go that way about three times now. Note the almost dead straight line and narrowness of run with distinct lack of beats.......that is one of the difference between a rabbit run and a fox run for anybody who is unsure. Thats my old Lurcher working in the background
  23. I agree the single handed run-out-and-pegging of a long net is not too difficult with a bit of practice.......but why make things more awkward and complicated than they need be. I rarely get out at night with the long nets now.....but when we did and if i do........we work in teams of three. One runs out the net, one pegs up, one carries the nets draped over his arms ready for the next linked drop. Long netting at night should never be carried out by one man alone in my opinion, the main reason being whilst the single man is driving the field towards the nets.........rabbits already in the net
  24. Really nice pictures Missie..........i don't mind the snakes.........i'd be a bit wary of the Skunk though. The Otters looked fantastic.....so nice to see them close up. Rolfe.
  25. Well done.........yes left back foot print........i had just watched a stoat chase it across a bunker of sand at the golf course. I tried to get the stoats prints in the shot as well but they were sadly indistinct.
