  1. Tried it boiled up once........very bland and tasteless. If you can find giant puff-balls later in the season........they are fab sliced thinly and fried in bacon fat. Rolfe.
  2. I Walked by Night...........by Lilias Rider Haggard........about the self proclaimed King of the Norfolk Poachers. Fantastic read.............! Rolfe.
  3. No it's not a stupid question..........my advice would be to give it time in the place you have it now........this gets the fox used to seeing it in one place. If you keep moving it....it will take time to accept it in it's new location. If it is in a good location............i would give it a couple of weeks at least.........if it hasn't caught then.......then think about moving it. The trouble is...........most people are not patient enough to let the trap do it's work. From experience you will catch more by leaving the cage where it is than by moving it. (provided it is in the correct loc
  4. Welcome Kate! Enjoy the site.........they look cracking dogs by the way. Rolfe.
  5. My initial thought was a badger....looking at the print....albeit a small one........and they do love ripping open old stumps for grubs..........but it just looks too small for me........interesting though. Rolfe.
  6. Yeah..........one of the commonest scams around.........just delete the crap. Rolfe.
  7. Well i don't know enough about PM's to judge........but i can say with a fair degree of certainty that it's NOT a mink print. I have to deal with mink on a regular basis........and unless it has been double printed it is not like any mink print i have ever seen.........and i see an awful lot. Rolfe.
  8. Nothing to worry about mate........just let nature take its course now.......! Rolfe.
  9. Sometimes it is best to have the pull cord running down to a treadle plate on the floor as a door trip mechanism. They are easy to modify with a bit of wire mesh. Failing that, extend the cord so the bait actually lays on the floor slightly. No self respecting fox expects to see a rabbit hanging 2ft up at the back of a cage. As with all trapping, try to make everything as natural as you possibly can.....Good Luck. Rolfe.
  10. Yes...........a load of rubbish.........because if you had got the cage set...........you would have caught old foxy first night. I was never a fan of pre-baiting for fox or rabbit cages...........! My argument is ......if you entice them into the cage by pre-baiting........then you might as well let the door shut and catch em! Rolfe.
  11. I am assuming the trap wasn't set to "catch"........is that correct? If it wasn't.......................my next question would be "why not"? My advice would be to dig a hole underneath the trap at the treadle end and to put the bait in there....this sometimes entices wary foxes to find the source of the enticing aroma.......! It is hard enough to get a fox to enter a cage at the best of times ........but to let one walk in and then walk out again is a serious offence. Rolfe.
  12. Use an old rabbit cage trap with a wire funnel entrance hole at the opposite end to the door. Chuck some rabbit offal or a half opened tin of cat food in the cage, tie the door closed, and after securing it to a cord........chuck it in the water. If the crayfish are in great numbers..........the cage will be full in a couple of hours. Rolfe.
  13. It is very effective and very easy - use the snare conventionally set at about 12" high as he will have his head up and anchor using the earth anchors (pinned post at the top of this forum) OTC Just to add to OTC's instructions..........use a wire tealer and they become virtually invisible in standing crops! Rolfe.
  14. Remove the breast meat..........slice thinly..........stir fry with a little oil for a couple of minutes before adding the stir-fry vegetables.........splash of soy sauce.........heaven. Rolfe.
  15. I do think the older you get the softer you get yes.........might be something to do with your own looming mortality. As a full time "Pester" i have to remove animals and insects when and where required.......something i came to terms with years ago. BUT..........it still doesn't mean to say i dont enjoy seeing the young of any species (rats excluded) reared to maturity. I never want to see the last mole, fox, rabbit whatever........unless it is on a job i have been paid handsomely to remove them. I do find my attitude is more geared to........"Live and let Live" nowadays than it used to be
  16. Welcome to the Forum........enjoy your stay. Rolfe.
  17. I was out tonight setting a few fence wires in runs through some sheep netting and i was amazed to see so many rabbit rabbit stops that had been unearthed by Mr Fox. It just made me wonder just how many young rabbits never ever see the light of day? I would imagine there must be many more young rabbits killed by natural predation than ever reach adulthood.
  18. About 8-10 weeks is a good time to separate kits from the jill........! Rolfe.
  19. Welcome mate.........enjoy the site Rolfe.
  20. I treat over 350 wasp nests most seasons............often 3 or more nests to the same roof space........so i agree with ditch the presence of another nest would do little or nothing to deter wasps. Rolfe.
  21. Not common LLoydy............but not that rare either. I have seen many white " Varigated" blackbirds over the years.........some with a little white ....others with a lot. I have also had a white "Grey Squirrel"............but as yet...........not a white mole. Rolfe.
  22. Great pictures.........looks ideal ferreting ground.......well done! Rolfe.
  23. Probably liver fluke.......there was a topic a week or so back on the same subject.......try looking back in the forum.
