  1. I saw, many years ago, a pit bull have its ears cropped in a pit village pub on a bar table with a Stanley knife ! Claret everywhere and a very angry dog. If I remember rightly, they used flour to stop the bleeding. Same as when dubbing fighting cocks. Cheers.
  2. Rab’s promised to give me a tour of Belfast, so we better have our day out before that or I might not be in a fit state ! Cheers.
  3. When I say I’ve been somewhere , done something or seen something it’s the truth. I can and have proven everything I say. When you say I’m wrong or contradict me , that’s the same as calling me a liar and mugging me off. You go out of your way to try and, for example, prove I’m wrong on desert thorn bushes, when I’ve actually hunted them and you haven’t been within a thousand miles of them. Same with “ you can’t drive the fields in winter, you’ll get stuck”; when I and others say we’ve drove the fields in winter, we are all liars according to you ! I quite like your naive ignora
  4. Where have I said Kurds are Bedouin ? I haven’t . Kurds, Iranians, Afghans arent Arabs. Beduin are Arabs Beduin derives from the Arabic word Bidu., meaning traveller or wanderer. Kurds, Iranians Afghans have their own languages and words for nomads All those countries had nomadic tribes. Saudi, Iraq, Jordan, modern Syria didn’t exist 100 odd years ago, they were all part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire until The Sykes Picot Agreement between Britain and France, after the First World War. British diplomats and soldiers bringing back Salukis or taking photos
  5. I’m learning all the time mate, and I hope to learn more when I come over. But when someone who doesn’t take his dogs out of his post code try’s to mug me off about something I have personal experience of and he can only Google, then I tend to try and correct them. Cheers.
  6. Mate, I know it’ll make me sound pretentious , but he’s trying to say I’m wrong about thing I know about, I spent 26 years in the Middle East , I speak Arabic, I have an Arab daughter in law and an English / Arabic grandson, I owned and worked salukis in Arabia, I regularly hunted and camped in the deserts, he can only Google about them, I’ve met and talked to Arabs as diverse as Saudi and Emirati princes and sheiks and Bedouin tribesmen, I spent a month with Hamed Guhmaim the Chairman of the World Saluki Society and owner of the saluki centre, my grandsons Saudi uncle wants to go and hunt and
  7. Arabian desert boxthorn, Exactly the same as the thorn bushes in the Saudi deserts that the hares shelter under and take refuge under , a completely different plant to desert cactus. Yes, I googled this but it’s the same terrain I hunted for years. Give it a test mate….. Cheers.
  8. I honestly don’t know what you are trying to prove ? Arabian hares rest up under thorn bushes, when you are out after them you have to beat the bushes with a stick to get them to move. I’m not talking Google, I used to do it every week end. As I’ve just said, you seem to think you’re the Middle East expert. I’ll let you get on with it. Cheers.
  9. What is wrong with you ? Desert hares will take refuge under thorn bushes when under pressure. Do our hares hit the rough when under pressure. Look, you want to believe this frostbite nonsense, fair enough. Cheers.
  10. “Dad, why did you cut my dogs ears off ?” “So they wouldn’t get frostbite, son !” ”Dad, why don’t you dress me in a parka and snow boots, instead of a thin dress and sandles ?” PMSL ! Cheers.
  11. PMSL ! I can go into my local halal butchers and talk to the Kurdish butcher , in Arabic, Kurds speak Kurdish dialect, but most know Arabic. if I asked him why they cut the ears off their dogs he’d chase me out with a meat cleaver ! LOL ! Cheers.
  12. How many Kurds do you know ? Yes of course it gets cold in those places , but you’re determined to prove your frostbite theory so I’ll leave it at that. As for your thorn bush comment, complete nonsense ! LOL! Unlike you, I’ve been in the Middle East deserts and there’s thorn bushes everywhere. I’ve said I don’t know why they crop their ears, but to prevent frost bite seems the least likely theory. Occums Razor…… Cheers.
  13. Karen Fisher and her dad imported Saudi and UAE dogs for their Ruwais kennel. I think she told me she got dogs from Hamad at the Saluki Center in Abu Dhabi. He told me if I couldn’t get one of his home without quarantine to get one of hers as they had the same lines. Cheers.
  14. I’ve seen Saudi and Emirati dogs with cropped ears. It’s mainly the Bedouins that do it, so it may be more of a traditional thing. Parts of the Iranian plateau get very cold ,but that’s at high altitudes , but in general , most of the Middle East doesn’t get below zero very often , it may do occasionally, but not to a point where frost bite would be a concern. If that were the case, why don’t the Afghans and other central Asian countries where it gets very cold crop their dogs ears ? No, I think there’s another explanation; Fens theory about the thorn bushes sounds plausible. Ch
  15. When we’re talking about Salukis I’d assume we are talking about ‘hot” deserts like the Middle East, and , in my experience, it never gets that cold. Yes , in parts of Iran, Iraq, Isreal it can get below zero , but the Arabian peninsula, well I’ve never seen or heard of it getting that cold. People may not realise but there’s “cold” deserts, like the Arctic and other very cold places, anywhere with a rainfall of less than a certain amount is classified as a “desert”. But for this discussion on Arabs cropping Salukis ears I’m assuming “hot” deserts. Running dog derivatives, such
  16. my missus, North of the Arctic Circle, -23 degrees. Cheers.
  17. That’s interesting as I’ve seen the thorn bushes in the desert and they are savage ! I don’t know why they do it, spaniels have big ears and work brambles , etc, granted our thorn bushes arent like the desert ones , but we don’t crop spaniels ears ! Who knows ? I’ll be going out there again , I’ll try and get more information. Cheers.
  18. I’ve never found out why the Bedouins cut the ears of Salukis, I’ve asked and got different answers; some say their feet catch the ears when coursing hares , others say it to prevent injury when on jackals or foxes. Cheers.
  19. Don’t think so , but I’ve heard people say there is. Maybe an expert on here will know ? Cheers.
  20. Henna, I doubt it but the Bedouin think it cools the blood, but there’s no proof of that . Cheers.
  21. Isn’t it just common sense ? Soak the foot in warm soapy water to soften and loosen the dirt, then brush it away with a soft brush ! Were not talking about scrubbing with a stiff brush and pushing the dirt up under the cuticle ! Any decent dog man, or woman, can look at a dogs nails and spot infection and decide on the treatment, to mock anyone for using a brush is beyond stupidity. Cheers.
  22. We’re talking about cleaning the nails with a soft brush, not scrubbing the front door step ! Cheers.
