I had lads from the AREG in my house for dinner and drinks in Jeddah, they gave me a patch but I wouldn’t be so gauche as to wear it but it’s in a frame in my man cave . When I heard of the downing and mixed with American whiskey, it just brought back memories. Maybe I’m getting old ……. Cheers.

KC135 just went down in the Gulf. They are usually air refuelling planes, I was seconded to an AREG during the Gulf War when I was on Jeddah Airbase. I doubt very much it’ll be anyone I met , far to long ago , but it makes me sad .Cheers.

Or you can hedge your bets; I keep a fairly small portfolio of shares, cash in hand, (various currencies), cash in bank and a small collection of precious metals and stones. The worst transaction I’ve ever done, and I’ve mentioned it on here before , was to buy some shares in a bank, after all, what’s a safer investment than a bank ? Well they had a high of £11 but now have languished at around 60p for years ! I’ll just keep them and hope they make a recovery when my grandson gets them in my will Cheers.

I was listening to Jacob Rees-Mogg talking to an economist the other day and he said in the early 40’s you could take a pound note into the Bank of England and they would honour the promise to “pay the bearer on demand” as paper money was just a promissory note, and you would get a gold sovereign in return . This is an absolutely true story, I swear on my bank managers life ! At the build up to the Falklands war, I took leave from my job and flew home from the Middle East and went to the Royal Navy Recruiting office in Newcastle and applied to join as a Direct Entry Technician on the premise I had once worked on RFA ships.
