  1. Cheers SS..that was my undertanding too, but a certain FEO has told my pal he can't have HMR to shoot Canada Geese as the HMR has lead in the bullet. Now this particular FEO is a complete prat, and I have told him so several times, it would give me great pleasure to tell him again on this one, but, as I'm sure you can understand I want to be very confident in what I am saying!! Cheers
  2. This is not an area I'm big on or have a lot of involvement with so I could do with some help please... .... having a chat with a pal today who is after a 17HMR for Canada Geese...now PLEASE, lets not get into the suitability or not of the tool..the question is... Lead cannot be used on duck/goose/wildfowl as far as I'm aware but this is only shot..not bullets.... Someone please straighten me out with the use of lead and on what water birds etc, preferably quoting the appropriate Act and sections. I know there are variations for Scotland...I need to know the situation in ENGLAN

  4. For day to day general .22lr vermin control I'd say you will be hard pressed to beat the CZ! I would strongly suggest against a .222 today, nothing wrong with them and a fine calibre but times change and nothing stands still...I am fairly sure I am correct in saying that Remington Arms (the .222 Remington) only now chamber one gun in .222...and for how much longer???? Go for a .223, arguably better, much more choice of guns and ammo. The Manufacturer is difficult on this, but my choice would be between, Tikka, Remington and CZ, never been a fan of the Howa simply because I'm not keen on
  5. My lad let go his first 12g at 10, I was behind him and a pal to the right to catch him/the gun if required...aimed about 500" across a just ploughed field in the general direction of an obvious and very large Oak! He was hooked! He had fired plenty of air rifles/pistols and rimfires before but he loved the shotgun and still does. Difficult one this...410 perhaps or a 20, but a light load on a 12 is not necessarily going to be much use at stopping quarry! Perhaps an arguement in these circumstances to suggest coming back in a year or two!!
  6. I have NEVER been a member of any Clay Shooting club and NEVER listed any shooting permissions on my SGC Grant or renewals.
  7. There are without doubt times and reasons why a FAC shotgun would be useful, but think long and hard. The vast majority of pigeon shooters do a VERY adequate job with 2 barrels or a 3 shot semi! Getting one for rabbit shooting would probably be nearly as hard as finding Rocking Horse s**t! You will have to show serious justification for a multishot FAC shotgun! They are more expensive to buy new on the whole but are cheap as chips on the second hand market as there is VERY little demand...they devalue big time! I have O/U and 3 shot semis and have no need for a FAC shotgun mys
  8. There is no overall universal answer. Mods make a gun easier to shoot and quieter, but I have spent a fortune on guns making sure the balance isn't completely stuffed. It is an art and is not simply a matter of buying a mod and screwing it on, commonly that will cause grief in several areas and possibly a nightmare if you have a floating barrel. Are they necessary....well there is the H&S issue to consider and also consideration to the neighbours/neighbourhood has to be be a factor sometimes. It certainly does help with quarry in my experience, I have dropped deer on more than
  9. I rather think this has been done too death, many views have been expressed and we seem to be going round in circles covering the same ground again. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, that is the nature of sites such as this, a number have responded who obviously have never shot a deer in their lives and spend far to much time on the keyboard trying to score brownie points, and a number of people have responded who obviously have considerable experience...and about everything you can think of in between. It was never my intention to cause such a response as has occurred, I still strug
  10. No, Deker or whoever you are, you seem to miss the single fact that I don't want to communicate with you. IMHO you are an attention seeking brat who undoubtedly was picked on as a child and loves to have the whole group squabbling about you. No need to bring anything to my attention, as to me you are as important as the day before the day after yesterday, so If I seem to care, please tell me. I would hate to be giving the wrong impression Now trot along my good boy and continue with your happy existence, I have always been told that If I can't say anything nice, then at least have the decenc
  11. The CZ HMR is factory available with a 16" barrel, for most mere mortals you will not notice the difference between 16-20".

  13. Are you board coz no ones been speaking to you or what? Lime lights over that way .........and pick your teddy up on the way as well. John Is there any chance you can contribute to the thread instead of hurling personal abuse? You do seem to have some problem with comprehension..once again let me bring these 2 posts to your attention...... QUOTE (HUnter_zero @ Aug 23 2009, 02:11 PM) QUOTE (davyt63 @ Aug 23 2009, 12:04 PM) hi would it be ok to use subsonic ammo, in a rimfire for foxes.is it the right caliber for foxes regards davy As already said it's no
  14. I have another question, has anyone ever been prosecuted for killing a fox with a bow and arrow? One thing that we tend to forget is that the law is an "ass" and until a judge has ruled upon a bit of legislation that bit of legislation will always be open to debate. It is not the actual wording of the law that has to worry us, it's the path leading to the court and the judge that we have to be constantly aware of. We can all debate and fumble over the law, it means nothing. However all it would take, is for you to be out with your .22rf and wound a fox and for just one person who wished to
  15. The .243" may well out sell the 6.5 due to more professional pest controllers using the .243" as a tool for fox control. Not so long ago, we had no option to use the .243" for fox and believe me when I say that it wasn't very popular other than with Roe stalkers in the UK. I agree that the miss-guided and inexperienced will opt for the .243" as their first choice for deer with the illusion that it will be suitable for all UK deer and also for fox control but hey they soon learn and buy the right tool for the job John The other side of the story.... I am a qualified BPCA/RSPH
  16. Skip read..are you having a larf, Look in the mirror and read my post again in relation to what you have just said...meat damage and stalking is what I refered to. Just to make life easier for you I have repeated my entire post to answer your misguided skip reading! FFS ..its called comprehension, and stick to the point, don't wonder off with any of this personal crap!
  17. Hi Davy. This has been round before and is always a bit of a Hornets nest. First off a .22lr will not be most peoples first choice Fox round and many will not get it granted for fox anyway. This may sound odd to many but read twice if you need to... From my point of view the .22lr 40g Lead HP Sub is an excellent close range fox tool, the bullet expands a treat and punches a big hole, often imparting all its energy. That is the only way I would use it on fox, I would not use high velocity .22lr simply because it is not as accurate, will tend to pass right through at close range and
  18. As already said it's not a suitable calibre at all. The little .22rf will kill foxes but you need something a little bigger, as suggested the .22H is a great fox calibre but has mainly been replaced by the .222 & .223 (and unwisely (IMHO)the .17HMR). John Chap...you really do need to reign it in a bit...that is NOT true, I and MANY people have FOX specifically listed on our FAC next to .22LR. (and also on my HMR and my .22WMR..as well as the centrefires) This is for the simple reason there are times when it is not only suitable but the preferred calibre, so please hold back
  19. Never had accuracy problems with the CCI 40g HP Lead Subs in my Silhouette...but they really did chamber VERY tight. I use Magtech subs now almost exclusively, had a bad press a few years back but they seem to work well these days. Tested them against the Eley subs about 4 weeks back, difference in the groups wasn't worth talking about for bunny bashing, but the Magtech HP is much better than the Eley HP, it opens up better and is a better killing round!! 3 boxes of the Eley now sitting in my cabinet while I carry on with the Magtech.....
  20. They have..but watch out for the latest replacement.....
  21. Shotgun, not that I wish to come in at the last minute and try and change your mind. But you have read on this thread about people like Mr Logic who use 243 and go onto say that they are competent at taking neck shots at deer and even brag about shooting a 17 pointer at 200 yards neck shot - whats a 17 pointer got to do with it? Lets face it if it were legal your 22.250 would floor the beast. I regularly use my 22.250 on farmed red deer and a 17 pointer would be considered a midget. The problem with the 243 using the heavier bullets (95 gr upwards) is that many 243 will not stabilize them
  22. That is some shooting all round and especially in the wind ...I was out with a pal Friday, 9 days back, zeroing his .243 etc etc...all done and sorted we propped a golf ball on a tripod of 3 rotten old branches.....fortunately it went down with the first shot at 100 yards ......propped another golf ball on the branches, spotted a rabbit at 185 yards and that too went down with my .223........we moved on......over the valley I glanced back and could just see the golf ball, ranged it to 300 yards...what the hell......the .223 is zeroed for 200. First shot...not a clue...second shot I saw a
  23. You are an inspiration to us all.... ...And you must be right, I struggle to understand how this site ever survived and grew to the size and standing it has, without your vast knowledge and helpful advice! You always were VERY good at causing grief and winding people up, I salute you for this, that is certainly one area you really do excell at! but I struggle to understand what that has got to do with shooting, and what it adds to any thread! 24. Good to see your years of experience and helpful attitude to members showing through....if he uses this in Scotland he will get arrested and lose his FAC!!! I'm sure he appreciates you are only trying to help him! Deker i`m glad you can now see how silly that comment is, there nowt like having a good look in the mirror Shotgun if you decide on one gun go with the 6.5 you wont get a better more versatile round for every occasion. But like i have previously said you have a good fox/Roe gun all ready so i`d tend to lean towards a dedicated all round Deer calibre. I used a 243 for
