  1. With a 12ft lb, 50 yards is always going to be on or past the limits of power, shooter, conditions, quarry. Most .22lr at between 100-200ft lb are zeroed at 50-60 yards. Best get as close as you can or move up the calibres!
  2. Things are different in a number of ways in Germany but I see no problem with .222 and Roe. BUT I would still avoid one and get a .223! These calibres are legal in Scotland, but not England/Wales (******* daft) I have no issues with Roe out to around the 200 yard mark with these, I have put them down a little further...and I mean put them down...not spent the rest of the day running after them!
  3. I'm a little confused about your comments on meat damage with the .223 and suggest ammo choice as the problem and not the calibre. I am also more than a little confused about your comment of some .222 not reaching 1000 joule, I'm not aware of any that get that high, (correct me if I'm wrong) most just manage a bit over 1000ft lb!
  4. Not read all this but apply for BOTH, and with moderators. That way you have 5 years to decide if/when you want to get a HMR and you don't have to pay another £26 and fill in all the forms again for a variation!
  5. Help me out here...what is all the season talk...I shoot them ALL year, do you have restrictions in Ireland?
  6. Chap..why not...and I think that was the point I was trying to make in some respects...the whole thing...please note my references to other animals...also...swatting a fly is fine ...killing a whole wasp nest is fine.....everyone draws the line somewhere. I am involved in Game and Vermin Control and ..for example, I love the fox...FAR more than the deer...but it NEVER stops me pulling the trigger. I am not a cold hearted killer, I act within the law and never have a problem with what I am asked to do..if by any chance a Specimen comes along I am MORE than happy trust me! If this de
  7. If you want a Cabinet take a look at these, if there is anything you fancy let me know and I'll give you the best price I can do...I'll need to know proximity you want it delivered so I can quote delivered price! http://www.djsproducts.com/
  8. Well, theres a few for you to consider already...but shooting off sticks or not, the Predator 8 COMPACT is better than the full length Predator...same baffles just a smaller, lighter mod which is fine on the .223 and will balance better even off sticks!
  9. Ok the story is Canada Goose in the 100-150 yard area. So forget shotgun here... Your choice of rifle calibre and bullet type and reasons please.....not interested in the food side, they just need to drop when hit... Cheers
  10. General comment not directed at any specific incident..... I struggle with many ill informed comments generally with deer. There are many who have an idealised/rose tinted view of deer and are dramatically removed from the real world. Probably never fired a rifle in their life and most certainly never shot a deer, what is it in this politically correct/tree hugging/I want to score some brownie points world that drives them. Specific comment With regards anyones opinion of the specific incident that started this thread, well, there will always be different views, but remember
  11. There are ongoing problems with "Blank" firers anyway...yours are NOT, they are black powder revolvers, only conditioned for use at the the range apparently. The chance of you being able to use them elseware for almost anything else is remote to say the least. My suggestion is you are acting outside the law and therefore potentially up for a lot of grief. As already suggested though, a phone call to you FEO or Firearms department should answer your question 100%. I would be interested to here the result when you get a definitive answer!
  12. 1. The principle of what you say is correct but ignores terminal ballistic effect and WASTED energy. Bringing energy to the target and imparting that energy into the target are 2 very different things 2. If we assume by .22rf you mean .22lr, you will be very hard pressed to make any round, fired at any angle, go much further than about 3km, a .22wmr on a good day will make it a little further but only to about 4km at very best with a strong tail wind ...and the .17hmr with 17g ammo, will only travel a little further than the .22lr, as it does not carry it's energy well over LONG distan
  13. In principle you want the scope mounted as close to the barrel as possible and in normal use use the moderator will not be a problem. Lamping may be a different matter, it is not uncommon to get glare off the mod!!

    Help

Everything I have found and been advised of points in the Shot/Shotgun direction quite clearly.
  15. Obvious care need to be taken when buying a cabinet. A shotgun cabinet is unlikely to be suitable for a rifle and ammunition, but the appropriate rifle cabinet is likely to be fine for a shotgun! If you need one let me know and I'll let you have best price..... http://www.djsproducts.com/
  16. V Bulls down the range at 1000 yards are reasonably common, but a rabbit in the field at 1000 yards is a VERY different thing.....
  17. As already reported Expanding ammo is allowed at Bisley. There may well be a ban on it for "some" competitions, and possibly at some other ranges, but for general shooting at Bisley it IS allowed!
  18. Talk to AGS when you have your FAC for the shotgun!
  19. Chap..I wish you all the best but I can't help thinking.................. What makes you think you will need a mentor? If you have so much experience and shot so frequently with your uncle and this ex policeman what have they said??? You only need 2 references! ....and if you have the reason/land and you already have SGC and this wealth of experience I'm struggling to see a problem or just what advice you want! ATB!
  20. Buying second hand is always a gamble if you do not know the full history of a rifle...I have known several people sell rifles because it was a dog...someone ended up buying it. Simple fact is a good RFD will take a gun back if you have a problem, but it can be hastle. Buy second hand and expect something not quite right...as long as it shoots straight most can live with that. Barrels on CF are a potential problem, not so much with rimfire. Just do your best to check everything and get assurances from the RFD he will take it back if it doesn't work...I have known several to hav
  21. Best I have dealt with is the Met, worst is Thames Valley (but only for about the last 5 or 6 years, they were ok before that!). Wilts seem to have their head up a cows arse somewhere! Real problem is there are no doubt good and bad in all area, seems I just run up against prats these days in Thames Valley!! Met have always been sensible, reasonable and helpful in my dealings with them!
  22. Get as many bags of silica gel as you can find..the little bags you often find packed with electrical/mechanical equipment. Put them and your scope in another plastic bag a seal it up..(after drying the scope as best you can of course) leave for a day or two at room temperature and the scope shoud be clear and dry internally! ATB! If by any chance it is a quality/expensive scope..send it back and complain!!!
  23. I would tend to on the HMR for the job anyway.... but lets leave that one alone. Good point on the Vermin side and the General Licence, so perhaps our FEO has got in wrong on 2 counts...wouldn't surprise me at all.......I'm sure you can guess who it is!!
  24. Out on new piece of land on Monday, and as many do, this had public footpaths all over the place. Only using the .22lr to clear some bunnies from an Arabian Horse Stud, turns out that 17 of the 19 we collected had mixxy and whilst the other 2 looked clear it's difficult to imagine they were not infected too... About an hour into the shoot as we walked the land with guns shouldered a disembodied cry came from behind the bushes covering the footpath..."Murderers" Never did see the culpret... Now ...we are all entitled to a view, but as it happens how wrong/misguided and uninforme
