Cautions of shooting birds with a rimmie
Deker replied to saxosportsaxo's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not a chance...your FAC "will" be granted for GROUND Game and vermin!! If you even hint at shooting up in trees at the interview your FAC is about 99.9% guaranteed to be refused! What you consider a safe shot after you get the certificate is down to you! -
Well done D...and .... Bugger the springers..he did well good on the big stuff down a Bisley with me a month or two back PS ..so did Charlie

If you use a subsonic cart (I've not seen any but I suspect someone makes them) you will not get a sonic boom, so the "hush" only has to moderate the propellant bang (which is all it can do anyway)....but then you end up with a tool with an arc like a rainbow and possibly the range to make it to the end of your garden May I suggest clubbing the prey to death, probably about as useful generally! If you use a high (normal) velocity cart then you will get a sonic boom..f**k all the "hush" can do about that!

Listen you big girlies...I thought I was the tart, I like light and easy rifles but my .308 really isn't painful (Remington SPS Stainless Synthetic) ..it weights nothing and is gentle on my shoulder (I use 150g almost all the time). However, you will need a scope that can take a bit of a pounding...and as for muzzle breaks..well ..they are fine as long as you are in the next county...they are painful for your pals and it's like an earthquake..just get a moderator!

N/V Waste of time? or a must buy?
Deker replied to saxosportsaxo's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
On an Air rifle it can be ok and "reasonably" cost effective. For higher power, especially centrefire you need a serious amount of money, a dedicated rifle, and night vision binos, check out the digital stuff....oh yes.... and it screws up your eyes when you look away!! But if I had the odd £5-7K available for very limited use I would invest! £100-200 worth of lamping kit with a dimmer can be a good alternative for us mere mortals! -
You may get lucky, usually with the cheaper scopes that all come out of the same factory but are branded differently, simple fact is most have size/thread issues...
-
6-9 Months for initial applications is not as unusual as you may think.....it's a pain and frustrating but you do not want to p**s off the firearms division....chill

This could easily end up with who has the biggest P***k...... POWER wise they both have plenty a long way off, by best with .22lr (sub sonic) is a baby bunny at 192 yards and with the HMR 258 yards (17g V-Max)...so far! Fact is we all like the long shots but someone will always do better, no sooner had I hit bunny at 258 and was talking to a pal, all pleased with myself, and he told me his best was 285 yards. The reality is that shots come along from time to time if you shoot enough. Simple fact is, even having made these shots, I suggest the .22lr can only be considered a 100

difficult to find yes - but it means you can fire LR power rounds in a 22mag gun. So less noise and meat damage making it a very useful all round gun Don't get me wrong, I love my WMR and it is a cracking calibre, but I also have a .22lr and HMR so I select as appropriate, I do not know any local dealers who stock WRF and it isn't a problem for me, but many others will struggle to find it as well...inevitable there must be some in the country (I guess)
-
Chap..lets not get into this HMR being SAFER than a .22lr as the rounds do not ricochet...that arguement is B******t!!! 16 or 20 inch makes little difference for the average shooter accuracy wise, but the longer barrel is cheaper and the shorter barrel "MAY" be more convenient in some situations. In simple terms it comes down to what you need and what you are comfortable with

Hi harrygrey382,are the lower power WRF/DYNAPOINTS subsonic if so that would make the WMR a very versatile gun, any feedback on the accuracy of this ammo?.Rgds Gerald. Hi Gerald, no these loads are not subsonic - yes that would make it one hell of a gun! The WMR dynapoints are more powerful still than high end LR rounds, the WRF are about on a par. From winchester: WRF f/s ft-lb Muzzle 1300 169 100y 1023 105 WMR Dynapoint Muzzle 1550 240 100y 1147 131 LR HP 37g Muzzle 1280 135 100y 1015 85 WMR JHP 40g Muzzle 1910 324 100y

does it say how long this mentoring has to last - or is it indefinte/until you apply for a change? There is NO FIXED detail on times or experience. Each region will put it's own interpretation on it. My region sort of suggests 6 months and 6 deer (MINIMUM) for deer mentoring, but, as long as the mentor and shooter present a good enough case then jobs a goodun !

It should only cost the time the letter and the stamp to get it opened up..if you ask for additional firearms at the same time it will cost money (£26).

Daystate Air Ranger Vs MK4?
Deker replied to jasper65's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Sounds like some good info Bedrock , Don't suppose anyone knows of any of these up for sale anywhere? Jasp I know an Air Ranger that will be on the market as soon as the owner gets his .22lr...problem is he is one of the guys who thinks it's too heavy, it also runs at 80ft lb, never fires 2 shots the same and you are lucky to get 8 shots per charge... Probably fired about 150 shots in it's life and like brand new, only sensible use is as a door stop, interesting waste of around £1000. Shame but true!!! -
Standard Police Clearance check.
Deker replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The FAC/SGC application asks for ALL criminal details, INCLUDING motoring offences. The PNC is far from perfect but it does contain an awful lot of info! If you lie you are likely to get shafted, if you tell the truth then appropriate consideration can be given! -

It is! Many people think they have... got away with it.... if they accept a caution, but it can have a habit of coming back and biting you!! ESPECIALLY where firearms are concerned! -
The BASC is a large organisation with over 100 years experience and they know their stuff. In this day and age where someone is likely to sue you for millions (and win) if you sneeze too close to them, then shooting insurance does really seem a necessity.

You will only find what works best on each site by trial and error, much DOES for ratty, chocolate is always a good starting point. They have NO taste buds but they do have a good nose, so generally best to keep it smelly!

Daystate Air Ranger Vs MK4?
Deker replied to jasper65's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Do you intend to f*** it or shoot it? And either way they are both heavy, think on if you intend carting it around the fields for a few hours! I know people with both and each complains about the weight, my Falcon and my .22lr is only a little over HALF the weight of these!... Neither work for me, but they do for some -
Unless you already have X-Ray vision forget any filters on "low powered" lamps, especially red, even for an air rifle, as it's like turning the switch off. Forget all the silly stuff and buying a lamp and scope mount and battery and belt pack and charger and filters, just get yourself a Deben Tracer Mini WITH dimmer (its all included). Job done, and you can even put a red filter on it and see nearly to the end of your garden with it fitted!

Falcon FN19 RAPTOR Light Hunter - deal or no deal?
Deker replied to Lee85's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Price wise it's impossible to tell without a bit more detail..especially about the scope...but Falcon make really accurate guns, they do not have the build quality of some manufacturers, but owners (including me) love them! -
Hi Guys To say I am P****d off is an understatement....I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of CCI 0073 .22WMR 30G V-Max ammo from GMK. I got fed up with the wait and have contacted GMK about the ammo, unfortunately they have lived up to their normal reputation, ..after a couple of emails and me telling them I was told on THEIR stand at the CLA Game Fair this year they had some on order, the following response has been recieved about this ammo...... Unfortunately you have been given incorrect information. No dealers have ordered this round via GMK, the only way you would

People can, and still do get Open Certificates from day one, this is becoming more and more rare though, particularly with larger calibres. There is little consistancy from region to region and I have known of people requiring a mentor even for a .22lr recently! Frustrating
-
.22WMR is a cracking close range fox tool but many regions simply will not consider rimfire for fox!...that being the case the scope is academic, but a 3-12 x 44 or there abouts would be fine! I love the WMR and rate it vastly better than the HMR on fox!
