The font of all knowledge seems to have dried up...is there anyone out there who can help at all, even with some of the answers? Cheers

fair point, but i would say VERY different in a good way why do I get the feeling you like SBS

Now I'm getting confused, I was under the impression you have already applied, that being the case I personally would suggest phoning and changing the application asap to .223! Simply because it has the edge on power, and the ammo choice is vast compared with .222 and much easier to get! Your chances of getting it are down to your background, experience and NEED! If you can demonstrate appropriate need they will have a job refusing you, although they may well try. If you can't present a compelling case you won't get it, simply as!

Go for whatever suits the shooting you want to do and what feels/fits you best, a SBS tends to have a VERY different feel to a O/U. MUCH wider choice of O/U these days, but it's use and personal preference you need to consider!

I find any set of circumstances difficult to understand where you may get a .222 but not a .223! The Home Office Firearms Guidelines 2002 (basically the Bible the forces use) makes it very clear that Rimfire is generally NOT suitable for fox and MANY regions will not consider them for fox at all. Who knows what your region will do, but a long shot I'd say on the whole, especially for a first grant! Not heard anything about a law coming in on fox, what is that all about and where did you hear about it?

Well, that's your calibres sorted out then! What do you intend to shoot with them? Expanding ammo is what you will ideally want to use to most efficiently stop pretty much all quarry, even though it is only a legal requirement on deer! But if you only intend to punch paper then no problem! If you are unsure about expanding ammo I suspect you are not going to reload, changing the .222 to a .223 asap may therefore be to your advantage as the ammo choice and availability is MUCH better! If you need a cabinet I can help, look here and let me know if anything suits and I'll give you be

You're going to get your feet wet..and/or have a long job! Doing a similar job on a Golf course with 5 lakes totaling about 60 acres of water (main one is 55 acres), the Canada (predominantly) Greylag (loads) and Egyptian are causing grief. Couldn't get the appropriate permission for the Egyptian but the Greylag are cleared! But this course stubbornly refuse to clear the deer, they are almost tame, although they are not at all confined to the Golf course! Have fun and remember those feathers take some getting through! ATB!

Errrrrr!!!! "Calibre"...you will have needed to state that on the FAC application, they are not usually happy with an application that says "rimfire/centrefire" ...and did you apply for expanding ammunition and a sound moderator? I was going to ask what calibre you have applied for and what you intend to do with it, probably a good starting point to get some helpful responses!

V-max can and do crater on deer, so for a humane kill you are right, there is no need to take risks, stay away from v-max. "idiots replying who have never shot a deer in their lives but know it all, and get all pompous and riotous because they read something somewhere and are simply trying to score Brownie points." if a lot of people disagree with you, that does not necessarily make them inexperienced, you should really understand you are not the only person in the world who shoots deer or does a lot of rifle shooting, indeed there are plenty around. John Chap, please read i

Ric This is a Hornets nest, mainly because you are likely to get a lot of idiots replying who have never shot a deer in their lives but know it all, and get all pompous and riotous because they read something somewhere and are simply trying to score Brownie points. Muntjac and CWD are Deer AND come under the 1991 Deer Act and 2007 Amendment, but are also classed as vermin, not so much the CWD now, as for some peculiar reason we have given a Non indigenous species protection, which, in effect, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act should actually be removed from this country altogether

The curious case of the exploding rabbit
Deker replied to JohnGalway's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
This is the best I can remember, hit it with a .223 Ballistic Tip back in May, I seem to recall it was about 160-180 yards, this was all that was left! Just like you we watched the explosion! -
Love it, painted a great picture Think I worked it out that it was the caller, but I can't imagine walking around the countryside for hours with that thing So again, does this work and ...what are the practical AND cost issues? Cheers

What do you want to put it on and what do you want to shoot with it? There are lots to look at here http://www.deben.com/ (lights & lamping) If any seem appropriate then just search the web for the best deals!

...and isn't it amazing how everyone hates them but the BNP is leading this poll.... Lets get real, they are not going to Govern in the forseable future but I agree with SOME (can I stress SOME) of their sentiments, the British public are obviously sick to death with bleeding heart liberals running the country! ATB, enjoy the debate!

The Free Range Organic Fair Trade Green National Shooting Party! That was a lovely bit of Venison!

Call me cynical if you like and I'm not having a go, I'm just curious, does it work, is this repeatable time and time again, and what is the crack walking around with a Ghetto Blaster?? I have tried a number of calls over the years and found all to have their uses but nothing "works", plenty of times they take off in the opposite direction whatever, and yes, sometimes they charge at you, just as often as when I squeak them myself!! So, is this really the messiah or is it just as hit and miss as everything else?? Cheers

Ok, I thought I had a pretty good understanding and knowledge of electrics but this new stuff is doing my head! Background, Tracer Mini 12v 30w lamp. These lamps are hard to find and expensive so some simply use the 12v 35w equivalent, the Tracer has a smallish enclosure so heat is an issue but with a dimmer unit fitted this is manageable. NOW....I have just found the LOW POWER SUPER EFFICIENT version of the 12v 35w lamp for under £2.00. This is 12v 25w rated as equivalent to the 35w version. Questions 1. will this lamp work with the dimmer? 2. will it use less power and th

You will also need a decent lamp for 200 yard night shooting, and, as has been said, the scope needs to be clear at whatever mag suits the occasion. My Tracer Max Lamp is meant to be good for 400yards, and whilst it is certainly OK for the VAST amount of shots I want to take at night I would not trust it much past 200 yards (and MUCH less with a Red Filter)! Many less expensive scopes are great in Daylight, Terrible in twilight and acceptable under the lamp (a good lamp that is). Difficult to tell this in the shop usually! I wouldn't be arguing with anything Jamie has said!

For an ALL round .243 ammo I would suggest the 90g. (England/Wales) But a better option would be two, 58 V-Max for fox and a 90-100g SP for deer, pretty much as Sounder suggested! Problem is they do fly differently! My .223 is my primary fox tool and I use 50g Blitzkings generally these days for Charlie etc., and 90g SP almost exclusively in the .243!

100g is the rule for Scotland, not so England/Wales! Other slight differences as well!

Burris vs Leupold VX-I vs MTC etc.
Deker replied to harrygrey382's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Nikon make some great scopes and I think they are a little underated in the UK, very popular in the US apparently, nevertheless... What he said above! -
I'll go with that , these tables are never accurate as there are so many other variable , but I always find them useful, they give you comparisons and put you in the ball park! Cheers!
-
'harrygrey382' Have you ever used the WRF in a WMR, I've never owned a WRF but understood you could! Just been doing some checking for other ammo and the very clear instruction is..... .22WRF and .22WMR are NOT interchangeable!

Which Centerfire caliber to choose?
Deker replied to Groach's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You may not be granted any CF rifle for open/flat ground with little or no safe back stops, period. A safe shot is a safe shot no matter what calibre of rifle you have in your hands. In safety terms a back stop is either safe or not and that would be for any calibre, in real terms this may no be so but at any rate and with out seeing your patch of land I would suggest you think about installing a few high seats which will provide a good safe back stop. If the rifle is only for use on Roe & Fox then a .243" with a suitable twist rate will do the job superbly and would be the one and only c
