I'm confused, what's Grey about it? There is nothing specifically illegal about it, but if you can be shown to be causing undue pain and suffering you can be liable under the vast array of cruelty legislation in this country. Simple fact is 12ft lb air rifle are not the tool for the job on a day to day basis for Canada geese. That isn't regurgitated, it is based on many years of experience...here is one from yesterday, clean through the head with a HMR and on the table shortly. Only took the photo about 6pm last night having this thread in mind!

It's got be be down to you! What I prefer or anyone else doesn't matter! Like I said in #2, everyone has the best scope on their rifle, but they are all different!
-
If I want one for the table then it will be the HMR every time, take its head off and leave everything else clean. For general Pest Control the WMR wins hands down for me, shoot it pretty much anywhere you like with a 30g V-max and they fall down, no need for great precision, fast shooting, front/back or side, straight through the feathers and lots of damage, end of, and lots down!

Rabbits Pushing Under Fencing
Deker replied to Heyford moles Pest Control's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Never even consider them unless it's likely to be long term use...... and I'm not keen on the digging either! Amazing what you find in them sometimes too. -
ALWAYS anchor your Fenns (Magnums etc)!

Shooting Canada Geese under the terms of the GL is legal all year. Shooting a Canada with a 12ft lb air rifle is NOT a good idea. Possible Exceptions You are VERY close, you can shoot straight and you put one in its head, even then expect it to flap about a lot a spread claret everywhere, I would like to see anyone drop a Canada stone dead with one air rifle shot regularly, therefore it is not suitable. I deal with a lot of Canadas and frankly I would NEVER consider taking out a 12ft lb air rifle for them!

They are a run of the mill general scope and will do fine for a HMR. Simple fact is everyone will have an opinion on make, magnification, reticle, etc, etc, and of course everyone will be right!

GENERAL GUIDE ONLY Buying used....... Look for a well kept gun, not too many dinks or scratches, usually shows a careful owner. Ask about it, see what the RFD can tell you about it's background. Look down the barrel, hold it up to the window or a shop light, see if it is clean and in good order, check the crown, check the bolt action, etc. If possible see if you can try it. Check to see what warranty the RFD is offering. Know general prices and haggle. Buying New...... Get what you like, what feels ok, spending a fortune is rather pointless in many instances for field

Prey tell old chap, just what would you say was a better foxing rifle? bearing in mind a .243 with a 55 grain bullet will out perform even the esteemed .22-250,.220 swift, .204 ruger, collection, and will cost (with home loads) about the same to run, I agree on the deer part (large deer) although a .243 will kill any deer species in this country, and is still a favourite with many highland stalkers, but as a fox rifle, it has no peers, We all have our preferred tools and shooting situations vary a lot, I take loads of foxes in domestic type situations with my rimfres.....BUT.........

You have an interesting take on a Humane shot, and so do you on calibre choice, who is to chose what is ridiculous for rabbit/fox/whatever, why should a .223 be acceptable and a .5 not, after all you appear to suggest distributing body parts over several counties is acceptable and humane and therefore justifiable reason for a calibre! And I put safety first, I can never envisage a situation where I could suggest giving a bigger more powerful calibre to someone to make up for their shortcomings as a shooter! What on earth has mad men and single shot rifles got to do with this?

A true barrel PROPERLY cleaned will not require any zeroing shots as long as all else stays equal. My moderators also get stripped and cleaned after an outing and when everything is put back together the rifle still holds zero! There are various cleaning/breaking in procedures for NEW barrels, these require a LOT of cleaning. As regards zeroing work, you should only need to fire a few shots anyway, and do not allow the barrel to get hot. If you find the process is taking time then call it a day, especially if your shots are beginning to wonder. Zeroing can be surprisingly tiring,

I remember reading Elvis was alive and driving a bus on the moon!

After cleaning how many rounds do you need to fire through it to restore accracy ? NONE! If you clean it properly you don't need any shots to re zero it, at the most one to clear out any solvents/oils you may have left in the barrel, but if you clean it properly you don't even need that!

I've been out with someone with a .22 rimfire for a long time now and we've never had a runner (he shoots and I spot as I'm on a SC not FAC). He also shoots .223 although I've never walked around with him whilst he's had that. I posted that because I'd never seen anything opened up like that before from even a centrefire. Phenomenal power and resulting reaction. I've seen plenty of centfire exit wounds from expanding ammunition but never a head opened like a can opener and literally hinged into 2 halves. My side point about humane killing is I have heard of plenty of runners from other

Yeah I've never seen a head opened up like that before, actually spilt into two clean halves and opened like a clam, immense destruction. All I can say about it is its really humane, far more than many of the recommended calibres as there's no way the fox could ever have known anything about it. If anything to me in the UK this shows how far concerns about public safety go towards restricting humane killing because its hard to think of anything as humane as that and whereas most much smaller calibre kills than that are humane, there's alwasy the chance of something not being instant wh

You don't wait until a centrefire loses accuracy before you clean it!

.22 Allowed But .17Hmr Not Allowed
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Exactly, the Home Office GUIDE to the Police of 2002 (I have a Hard Copy) did not feature the HMR, as, during the period of its compilation the HMR did not in effect exist! Regardless...The Home Office book is "GUIDELINES", back in 2002 when .22lr and .22WMR (.22RF) were NOT listed as suitable for fox mine were specifically conditioned with the word Fox, as was my HMR (so were/are MANY other peoples, then and now), some years back all my Firearms acquired the condition AOLQ, so whatever the Guidelines say it is my call, and 100% legal to shoot fox with ALL my rimfires! .22 Allowed But .17Hmr Not Allowed
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I don't know what foxing has to do with .17HMR as to the best of my knowledge, the Home Office withdrew .17HMR as an approved calibre for fox use last year. Therefore, .17 HMR is left for the purposes of Good Reason as a small vermin round. Whereas I don't believe it stops you using it against foxes provided you make humane kills as there is no specified legal minimum calibre for fox control, it does mean that wanting to carry out fox control doesn't qualify as Good Reason any more for owning .17 HMR, which seems to be by implication their argument here, albeit in the opposite sense - -
Firearm Variation .17 Winchester Super Mag
Deker replied to hitman hilts's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Yeah definately and accuracy seems to be the .17 wsm's forte. In this video using test ammo and pre-production guns and a rucksac as a gun rest (!) the reporter says he's shooting 1/2 MOA groupings at both 100 & 200 yds. That's some accuracy especially with pre-production stuff! http://www.petersenshunting.com/2013/01/02/introducing-the-new-17-winchester-super-magnum/ Alsone You need to calm down a bit, you are getting carried away with promotion spiel. Invited/selected guests have had their hands on a 17WSM When did you ever hear of a new calibre being slated -
E.u. Firearms Poll - Response Needed
Deker replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Yes, my BASC email arrived, done it. This cannot possibly work in the EU anyway, the variation and use and firearm crime is very different in so many of the countries. As usual the Federal Republic of Europe is trying to extend its powers with no right or need! The sooner we have the Referendum the better! -
Firearm Variation .17 Winchester Super Mag
Deker replied to hitman hilts's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Apologies, I misread that chart, the far column is 250 not 400yds. Still 150 ft lbs @ 250 yds isn't bad. Its around the same as .22LR at the muzzle (depending on the ammo choice of course)! Energy retention at looooong distances in the field isn't a problem with many calibres, many carry plenty of energy way after their "usable range", the problem comes with actually calling the shot and delivering the energy accurately to the right part of the quarry at loooong distance. A .22lr Sub has plenty of energy to knock down a rabbit past 300 yards, the problem is delivering that ene -

A report I read at the announcement of this calibre suggested it would be in the UK "later this year", frankly I don't believe that, I will be surprised if any turn up before Spring 2014! Time will tell!
