As a matter of interest WHY are you bedding? Were you getting problems or is this just an exercise? Edit Which stock is it? -
.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Same as Stalker, although only put 1000 ish rounds through my hmr. Never had/noticed a split case. But yours is a fair point Deker, i don't examine every case....Never really thought about getting a little brush and cleaner into the extractor lug seatings. Will do it when cleaning from now. Can only be a positive! You would be surprised what comes out of them, or perhaps its just mine with split cases. I tend to use a flat headed jewellers screwdriver to dig out the muck, they are not easy to access and care is needed. -

Odds are people just miss them, if you fire enough there are plenty...... -
.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There is no getting away from the fact the tiny .17 bore is fiddly and tricky to clean, doing the job properly and CAREFULLY is essential. And don't forget chamber and extractor lug seatings, the HMR is well known to split cases and potentially this causes lots of muck issues in these areas. Edit Oh yes, strip and clean the bolt as well from time to time, only takes a few minutes but well worth it. -
.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?

Tried using the snake last night ,bloody mare of a job ,ended up throwing it in the bin. Maybe i was too hasty chucking it. Maybe you could instruct me on the correct way of using it ,if would be so kind You seem to have worked it out, that is the correct place for it! -
I never knew that. It's on the BASC website but there's no mention of it in The Deer Act that I can see. Maybe it was a later Act that amdended the provisions in respect of cwd and muntjac. Same here. I thought, in England it's .243 for deer, regardless of species. Nope, all changed in the Deer Act Amendment 2007....keep up! Edit Applies to England and Wales, Scotland has their own version and I'm not sure about NI.

That is exactly your problem, its legal BUT you may have a job on your hands proving it was humane if several witnesses saw your Canada dancing all over the place spreading claret everywhere, which is 99% what they will almost certainly do with a 12ft lb in the head. I would like to see the man who can stop them in their tracks on a regular basis with a 12 ft lb. Edit Lets be clear here, the mere act of using a 12 ft lb on a Canada is NOT illegal. If that action leads to an act of cruelty then other legislation may come into play.
-
Many things that are legal are not written. Ask the BASC/CA whoever, the answer will be the same, it's not illegal but definitely not recommended! The fact is you will not find it written in any legislation that it is illegal to shoot a Canada with an air rifle, so it is very simple, if there is no legislation banning it, then its legal, BUT, as I said in #23, make sure you do it right or you will risk grief under various cruelty legislation. Just like fox, there is no law banning air rifle for fox either, and there is no law allowing it, but you would have a job to argue it is the right
-
I'm confused, what's Grey about it? There is nothing specifically illegal about it, but if you can be shown to be causing undue pain and suffering you can be liable under the vast array of cruelty legislation in this country. Simple fact is 12ft lb air rifle are not the tool for the job on a day to day basis for Canada geese. That isn't regurgitated, it is based on many years of experience...here is one from yesterday, clean through the head with a HMR and on the table shortly. Only took the photo about 6pm last night having this thread in mind!

It's got be be down to you! What I prefer or anyone else doesn't matter! Like I said in #2, everyone has the best scope on their rifle, but they are all different!
-
If I want one for the table then it will be the HMR every time, take its head off and leave everything else clean. For general Pest Control the WMR wins hands down for me, shoot it pretty much anywhere you like with a 30g V-max and they fall down, no need for great precision, fast shooting, front/back or side, straight through the feathers and lots of damage, end of, and lots down!

Never even consider them unless it's likely to be long term use...... and I'm not keen on the digging either! Amazing what you find in them sometimes too. -
ALWAYS anchor your Fenns (Magnums etc)!

Shooting Canada Geese under the terms of the GL is legal all year. Shooting a Canada with a 12ft lb air rifle is NOT a good idea. Possible Exceptions You are VERY close, you can shoot straight and you put one in its head, even then expect it to flap about a lot a spread claret everywhere, I would like to see anyone drop a Canada stone dead with one air rifle shot regularly, therefore it is not suitable. I deal with a lot of Canadas and frankly I would NEVER consider taking out a 12ft lb air rifle for them!
-
They are a run of the mill general scope and will do fine for a HMR. Simple fact is everyone will have an opinion on make, magnification, reticle, etc, etc, and of course everyone will be right!

GENERAL GUIDE ONLY Buying used....... Look for a well kept gun, not too many dinks or scratches, usually shows a careful owner. Ask about it, see what the RFD can tell you about it's background. Look down the barrel, hold it up to the window or a shop light, see if it is clean and in good order, check the crown, check the bolt action, etc. If possible see if you can try it. Check to see what warranty the RFD is offering. Know general prices and haggle. Buying New...... Get what you like, what feels ok, spending a fortune is rather pointless in many instances for field

Prey tell old chap, just what would you say was a better foxing rifle? bearing in mind a .243 with a 55 grain bullet will out perform even the esteemed .22-250,.220 swift, .204 ruger, collection, and will cost (with home loads) about the same to run, I agree on the deer part (large deer) although a .243 will kill any deer species in this country, and is still a favourite with many highland stalkers, but as a fox rifle, it has no peers, We all have our preferred tools and shooting situations vary a lot, I take loads of foxes in domestic type situations with my rimfres.....BUT.........

You have an interesting take on a Humane shot, and so do you on calibre choice, who is to chose what is ridiculous for rabbit/fox/whatever, why should a .223 be acceptable and a .5 not, after all you appear to suggest distributing body parts over several counties is acceptable and humane and therefore justifiable reason for a calibre! And I put safety first, I can never envisage a situation where I could suggest giving a bigger more powerful calibre to someone to make up for their shortcomings as a shooter! What on earth has mad men and single shot rifles got to do with this?

A true barrel PROPERLY cleaned will not require any zeroing shots as long as all else stays equal. My moderators also get stripped and cleaned after an outing and when everything is put back together the rifle still holds zero! There are various cleaning/breaking in procedures for NEW barrels, these require a LOT of cleaning. As regards zeroing work, you should only need to fire a few shots anyway, and do not allow the barrel to get hot. If you find the process is taking time then call it a day, especially if your shots are beginning to wonder. Zeroing can be surprisingly tiring,

I remember reading Elvis was alive and driving a bus on the moon!

After cleaning how many rounds do you need to fire through it to restore accracy ? NONE! If you clean it properly you don't need any shots to re zero it, at the most one to clear out any solvents/oils you may have left in the barrel, but if you clean it properly you don't even need that!
