American Eagle Hollow Points Not Dropping Foxs ¿
Deker replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Make of this what you will..................... AE223G, American Eagle .223 50g HP. I have a few boxes but can't remember the last time I used them, favouring SP or Ballistic tips generally for the field. But I was at Bisley yesterday so I thought I would give them a try, they need using up. Tikka .223 T3 Lite Stainless, 19.5" barrel, 1-12 twist, P8 Compact calibre specific mod, Harris Bipod, Prone, Short Siberia 200 yards, wind NIL, 10 shot string, ammo taken from 10 shot plastic ammo insert in box as it came with no sorting of any description. Rifle is Zeroed at a TRUE 20 -

They will NOT fragment very well, they are Jacketed HP, they will peel back and expand mushroom fashion, or go clean through depending where you hit the fox, possibly both. Just exactly where do you think you were hitting these foxes, because whatever you may think, if you put one of these in the right place the fox will fall down! "rezerod 1.5" high at 100yds as per usual" WHY, if you are shooting foxes -120, why are you not zeroed at 100 yards, and just where is the zero if you are 1.5" high at 100 yards?? average fox seems yo be around the 150-170 Mark. it really zerod at 200 whi -
It is hardly going to be opened if this is his 1st permission and he doesn't use or have permission for rimfire on it! Hence my question above......... What do you do with your rimfire at the moment?

American Eagle Hollow Points Not Dropping Foxs ¿
Deker replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'm not getting picky, he said like he always does (with his previous ammo, that was the impression I got anyway) shooting 1.5 inches high, that may give a 200 yards zero with his usual ammo, with Federal (AE) HP it is not likely to be on the same zero! Whichever way you want to look at it, no fox is going walkabout if it is hit in the right place with this Federal (AE) stuff, so he isn't hitting it in the right place, that could be down to the zero, ammo, or shooter, possibly his barrel just doesn't like this stuff, it happens, plenty of other possibilities as well! -

That isn't that much of a surprise, it can happen with many types of ammo and largely depends on distance and density of what it hits, especially bone/soft fleshy tissue. A while back I dropped a Muntjac with a .223 55g Wolf HP and look as I might, I couldn't find the way in or out until I skinned it, I have also dealt with other deer with these and the heart was mush and the exit as big as your fist!! I have a few boxes left of AE (Federal) .223 HP simply because I prefer the SP or V-Max types on the whole for my requirements, I find HP ok, but just don't find much to do with them! -
So do I, it works for me and what I do, but I do have a decent selection of tools, everyone has different shooting situations/requirements and there are lots of other calibres as well!

I'm getting lost with all the Bull here, YES, you can have a .243 on first grant for Fox, or whatever you like if you can justify it! THE END! do you mean me with the bull Firearms Law says you can have what you can justify! And also remember the 2002 Home Office Guide to the Police lists .243 as FOX suitable. So think about some of the replies......... thank you for the info ive used 223 and 243 how would you rate a 22.250 compared ? I run .223, .243, .308, (4 rimfires, a couple of air rifles, inc FAC and some shotguns) I have no need for a 22-250

.22 Allowed But .17Hmr Not Allowed
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Have you had ricochets come back towards you? No, have you?, that was my point unless you are being cryptic?? It needs several impact point to create a 180 degree ricochet, ie, into a quarry or similar, or maybe you want to argue that too? The danger of a ricochet is largely one of hitting someone outside the line of fire, not in front of it. And yes of course I've seen that .50 video, only thing I can say is only in America What YOU should be asking yourself is why have I had ricochets coming back at me, and as the 50cal video shows, they all do it it if you -

So, who is twisting your arm? Get the right load for the barrel in either case and any difference at 100 yards will not be worth talking about!

We are all different people. Whatever floats your boat!

As someone else said, VERY close sometimes, and I have had to stop more than one getting too close. They will come charging at you sometimes, but as we all know at other times they will simply turn and run in the opposite direction.

.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Same as Stalker, although only put 1000 ish rounds through my hmr. Never had/noticed a split case. But yours is a fair point Deker, i don't examine every case....Never really thought about getting a little brush and cleaner into the extractor lug seatings. Will do it when cleaning from now. Can only be a positive! You would be surprised what comes out of them, or perhaps its just mine with split cases. I tend to use a flat headed jewellers screwdriver to dig out the muck, they are not easy to access and care is needed. -

.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There is no getting away from the fact the tiny .17 bore is fiddly and tricky to clean, doing the job properly and CAREFULLY is essential. And don't forget chamber and extractor lug seatings, the HMR is well known to split cases and potentially this causes lots of muck issues in these areas. Edit Oh yes, strip and clean the bolt as well from time to time, only takes a few minutes but well worth it. -
.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?
Deker replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Tried using the snake last night ,bloody mare of a job ,ended up throwing it in the bin. Maybe i was too hasty chucking it. Maybe you could instruct me on the correct way of using it ,if would be so kind You seem to have worked it out, that is the correct place for it! -
I never knew that. It's on the BASC website but there's no mention of it in The Deer Act that I can see. Maybe it was a later Act that amdended the provisions in respect of cwd and muntjac. Same here. I thought, in England it's .243 for deer, regardless of species. Nope, all changed in the Deer Act Amendment 2007....keep up! Edit Applies to England and Wales, Scotland has their own version and I'm not sure about NI.

That is exactly your problem, its legal BUT you may have a job on your hands proving it was humane if several witnesses saw your Canada dancing all over the place spreading claret everywhere, which is 99% what they will almost certainly do with a 12ft lb in the head. I would like to see the man who can stop them in their tracks on a regular basis with a 12 ft lb. Edit Lets be clear here, the mere act of using a 12 ft lb on a Canada is NOT illegal. If that action leads to an act of cruelty then other legislation may come into play.
-
Many things that are legal are not written. Ask the BASC/CA whoever, the answer will be the same, it's not illegal but definitely not recommended! The fact is you will not find it written in any legislation that it is illegal to shoot a Canada with an air rifle, so it is very simple, if there is no legislation banning it, then its legal, BUT, as I said in #23, make sure you do it right or you will risk grief under various cruelty legislation. Just like fox, there is no law banning air rifle for fox either, and there is no law allowing it, but you would have a job to argue it is the right
