  1. Do you have a problem with .222, have you found it lacking and require a little more? If not then don't try and fix it!
  2. Why do people persist in this you need a centerfire for fox BS, he clearly said close, and you have just as much chance of a fox moving at distance and taking half his guts out with a centerfire as you have of hittinig a closer fox in the jaw with a rimfire. Some read to much and have no experience. STOP generalising and understand not every fox it shot 200 yards away! Tell me why I need a centrefire to shoot a baited fox 30 feet away in a clients back garded from a window. Why do I need a centerfire to remove a fox that has taken up residence in the Hay barn, why do I need a centerfi
  3. Can you elabotare, what is that about please? Who is trying to reclassify centrefires for what reason and with what legal powers? Cheers fire arm legislation have meeting with various shooting organisations such as basc and other higher authorities to try and simplify licensing and one of the things mention was the +3000 rounds to be put in one category. so im guessing if your land is clear for .223 it will cleared for all +3000ups rounds Are you talking about ACPO's Coffee Mornings? Who are Firearms legislation and other higher authorities?
  4. If it has Philippines stamped on the side my suggestion is its a fake, the Genuine units had Philippines on the base of the saddle!
  5. Can you elabotare, what is that about please? Who is trying to reclassify centrefires for what reason and with what legal powers? Cheers
  6. i bought 100Hornady Vmax and there were split cases though out the 100 so i swiched to Federal and have not found one since 3years on!! Bob Palmer at Hornady, in an e-mailed reply to George's (Shootinguk) enquiry about split HMR necks: CCI makes the cases for all the .17 HMR ammo and loads it for the different companies.
  7. Frankly I'm struggling with that sort of power figure, the spring (what spring?) must shake it to bits and make it almost unusable. Ply comes in many grades and a 12 ft lb could shoot through some 3/4 inch ply in some situations! Did you set the Chrono up correctly?
  8. What do you want to do with it? This is not a common calibre for good reason, and as a first time centrefire there may be others better suited for your requirements!
  9. It may be a 1 for 1 but you are moving up the field, look at it another way, you just have FAC air and trade your FAC air rifle mod for a .308 rifle, do you really think it is just a case of, ok fine, get on with it? Another Interview is up to your region!
  10. The Hornet is an in between round between your .22 lr .223, it definitely isn't a .223 replacement. Are you happy with what you have, what do you want to do that you can't achieve with your .22lr and .223? Do you have deer on the agenda? Something to think about, get rid of the .223, buy a Hornet and a .243, but it obviously depends on your land and quarry (and bank balance), the .243 is the best Long range Fox calibre you will find, and all deer legal, for medium size and distance quarry the Hornet, then vermin and close the .22lr! For many people this will provide a first cla
  11. Everyone comes at this in their own way and for their own reason, Rifles are tools to me, simple as and end of! I have Air, FAC Air, 2 x .22lr, HMR, WMR, .223, .243, .308 and an assortment of shotguns. If I need a tool to do a job I buy it, I don't have any need for a Hornet, either .17 or .22, because there is no quarry and no sites I have that fall in it's power/range BETTER than any rifle/ammo that I already have. I have often thought there is a big gap in power between my WMR and .223 (around 1000ft lb gap) but this has NEVER been a problem on any site after any quarry, I have sim
  12. The question of split cases was covered in an email response from Hornady on another thread, but to repeat. This goes back to an article in Shootinguk from 2007, direct from Hornady. It has also been reported on this and many other sites since... Bob Palmer at Hornady, in an e-mailed reply to George's (Shootinguk) enquiry about split HMR necks: CCI makes the cases for all the .17 HMR ammo and loads it for the different companies. When they make the cases they draw the case out to a .22mag case that has a straight wall. Then the priming compound is put in the rim of the case. The case i
  13. Why do people keep bringing wind drift into the debate about HMR, .22lr and .22WMR are both worse! You guys can debate all you want but you don't buy a rifle on finances, you buy it to do a job, if you can do this with .22lr saving money as you say, then you simply do not need a HMR!
  14. Thanks for that link Dekers, I had not seen it before and it is simple and revealing. I do get fed up with people slagging off the .17hmr and repeating the same old drivel about being blown around in the wind. Wind affects the .17hmr about half as much as either the .22LR or the .22WMR Take a look at the graph for Trajectory on that site comparing the three rounds - they say it is a 100 yard zero but clearly it is a 50 yard zero or is my brain fogging up? They do seem to have a typo on the "Range". They list Average as 100 when it is 50 and long as 200 when it is 100!
  15. See what Mr Federal says..................... Tick the compare boxes of the HMR/WMR you want then hit the wind drift arrow. http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rimfire.aspx ...and see the WMR is worse in all cases!
  16. My #16 refers, the Rem 597 is a semi auto and NEVER AVAILABLE IN THE UK in HMR, and apparently NONE have blown up, there is magazine damage on some. As I pointed out in #16 this morning!.
  17. I think you should read my posts, #16 covers a bit, and does that photo look like a blown up rifle to you, I also draw your attention to his comments... "I and the rifle have suffered no damage". I also suggest you start another thread for HMR grief and feel free to show a blown up HMR!!
  18. The case is spun to put the primer evenly in the rim. After the priming is complete the case mouth is reduced to the .17
  19. The reason the necks split is well documented and accepted by most manufacturers. as a pointer..... Hornady, in conjunction with Marlin and Sturm Rurger turned what was pretty much a wildcat into the HMR we know. With the .22 WMR as the parent case! Edit Perhaps an idea to start another thread if anyone wants to pursue this as this has little to do with the .17 Win Super Mag!
  20. The HMR has issues and I don't see anyone arguing about that, but I think you are generalising and mixing up issues. If a cartridge has enough energy to split a case it will have enough energy to get the bullet out of the barrel. That is a squib load not a split case, commonly attributed to no propellant in the case! As regards "Blowing his rifle up", what does that mean and where is the picture?
  21. Not a daft question and the answer may seem strange, NOTHING appears to happen when the case splits, shot fires seemingly normally and case ejects fine. This is not an issue to be taken lightly but if you clean/maintain your HMR properly the case split is VERY unlikely to cause any issue, the HMR runs around 245ft lb and is surrounded by metalwork thick enough to deal with centrefire pressure. Suggestions have been made about blown up HMR barrels, my response is simple, show me one! There have been issues with the HMR and Semi Autos in the US and as far as I'm aware there are serious
  22. We seem to move on then! Do you have a WMR and a HMR? What experience have you had with them both on Fox, with what ammo at what distances in what situations? I have a lot of rimfires and centrefires and Shotguns and I do a lot of serious Fox control, there isn't "a" rifle, "more practical for serious Fox control" , every situation is different and I do my best to take out the rifle best suited for that situation. Fox and .22lr Fox and HMR Fox and WMR In these cases they were all stopped with the rifle "more practical for serious Fox control".
