  1. Yep, there is a pattern, HMR has issues....... it is nothing specifically to do with any make of rifle, it is due to the manufacturing process of the ammo. It can also be a very useful calibre!
  2. The Zero on 24x will still be on zero if it's 10-12x mag. It just means that I'm still perfectly zeroed for anything between 10x and 24x too. So if it's a very tight shot, and I need better magnification, I will increase the mag as required. We all have ways of doing things but that seems a little strange to me, why zero at a magnification you seldom shoot at, the norm is to zero at the mag you most use and the distance you most shoot at. It should still be zeroed all through the range if you zero at 1x mag or 30x mag. The higher the magnification the bigger the perceived shake a
  3. That is a little too Black and White, there are plenty of ways a bipod etc can be used successfully with a springer, my lad mastered it with his Gamo and was deadly accurate! Same as what I'm using. I have a little Gamo springer and am really enjoying it. I'm changing my new (and recently damaged) scope over from my Ultra to the Gamo. I love my Ultra, but the springer is just so much more fun. Is his a break action Gamo? If so, what kind and what bipod is he using? Was.... he no longer has it, Shadow RSVP ( or some collection of letters after it ), yep a break barrel. Very cheap fix
  4. I'm confused...so why do you zero at 24x and shoot at 10-12x? :hmm:
  5. Do the maths, speed of sound - speed of pellet, 30-35 yard target and see yourself. Remember, it is not just hearing, bunny would also need reaction time. Then ask yourself, if they can do that how come anyone ever hits one with a sub 12ft lb air rifle? :hmm:

  7. If you have already checked other issues such as moderator, crown etc and they are all fine, then shimming isn't the answer to this sort of issue. If you can't adjust the scope enough left/right then you have a faulty scope, mounts or possibly even rail. That's like putting a sticking plaster on a broken leg.
  8. There are many explanations of Parallax on the web, most probably better than I can tell you, but put VERY simply, the best way to avoid parallax error is to make sure you look through the centre of the scope. Don't get all tied up in this malarkey, it isn't as critical as some make out in the majority of situations!
  9. Yesterday, 30feet, (about 9 metres) Just to keep the pot stirred about HMR and Fox! ATB!
  10. I'm not trying to put you off, as I said before, get what you want, personal choice, but why does lying down waiting for the fox need a varmint barrel? Heavy or light barrel will give no difference in accuracy with a 1 off cold barrel shot! For general field work I see no benefit whatsoever in heavy barrels, they come into their own with extreme distance, continuous use, therefore primarily on the range! Your OP said .....rifle will only be used for fox control and im not planning on shooting past 200yards Like I said personal choice, my .223 has accounted for a 10 shot string of
  11. Have/use what you like obviously, but I have never found a use for the Varmint barrel in the field on either a rimfire or centrefire, jut a heavier lump to carry about! What is it that is drawing you to the varmint barrel?
  12. I clean mine regularly and would always advocate that, but there are others here who say they never clean theirs and they shoot fine! Barrel Cleaning will seldom if ever be the reason bullets get stuck! I checked the zero on mine at 100 yards at Bisley yesterday as I'm off to a fox job this PM, 5 shots, all V-Bulls and two split cases out of 5, split cases seldom have any effect either! !
  13. A long time shooting pal of mine got one of these, probably about 5 years ago now, maybe 6, I was with him when he bought it from Tony at Wilts Rod & Gun in Swindon. Cheap as chips (in rifle terms). Light, pointable, easy to use and incredibly accurate. I have been out with him many times using this and the list of great shots it has pulled off goes on and on, we have both been impressed (and possibly a little surprised) just how good this has been for the money! http://www.czub.cz/en/catalog/364-centerfire-rifles-cz/KL/CZ_527_SYNTHETIC.aspx
  14. You don't have to be shooting any time, you can apply at initial grant, and more than a few get one then! Every situation is looked at on its own merits, then of course there is your regions Policy and what your FEO had for breakfast. It is quite common for them to be automatically opened upon first renewal, but take nothing for granted!
  15. How long ago did you sell your .22lr, I take it you notified your region of the sale at the time, that is also the time to request a 1 for 1 variation and get the slot opened again!
  16.  Sorry, but that is the first time I have heard a 1000ft lb PLUS FMJ described as "just as humane as an air rifle pellet"
  17. How far away are these foxes, how many rabbits? There can be few situations where one calibre is the answer!
  18. Shoot within your capabilities and that of the calibre/ammo you are using. That applies to EVERY type/calibre of gun! The HMR is more than capable of fox if you are sensible! ATB!
  19. There is no financially viable way of solving the problem of split cases on the HMR, it is a basic design/technology flaw of reducing neck sizing without being able to anneal. Whilst throwing money at this problem in the form of much tighter manufacturing tolerances may well reduce the incidence of split cases, it will never solve it, (with technology as it stands today) that will also slow production and increase costs substantially. As regards any other issues that will be quality control. This is well known and has been published many times.............. From Bob Palmer at Horna
  20. As above, spend what you like but performance wise there is very little in it, especially if you are talking sub sonic ammo. So, up to you, I have no need to spend anything more than a SAK costs!
  21. Very true, CCI still make a lot of the HMR and simply brand it, but not all, and not Winchester! There is more than a suggestion that Federal make their own as well, (if anyone can confirm or otherwise I would be interested) but Federal and CCI are both owned by ATK, so arguably come under the same umbrella anyway! From: cciexpert@ATK.com > To: > Subject: RE: CCI Ammo - Ask the Expert Form > Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2013 17:37:40 +0000 > > Deker, we don't make Winchester 17HMR ammunition and there may others. > > > > > > Make Every Shot Co
  22. There is no copper residue As SS said, there are loads of .22lr with copper coats, who knows what the original owner has shot, or indeed what the op may shoot!
