  1. This is new to me as well, could this base be angled to allow for loooooooooooooooong distance shooting with some scopes, far better to have an evenly angled one piece base than to try and shim a single ring. Not a clue really, just throwing that in the mix!
  2. This rabbit price malarkey goes round and round, if you are getting £2.50-£3.50 each you are doing well, they are tight buggers round here and the dealers sell them retail at those sort of prices, and of course they only want head shot! I am in the pest control business and I do my clever stuff on the range, I want them stopped so head shots happen, but I put the round anywhere I know it will work, at £1 each cleaned it is seldom worth me making a trip to my game dealer!
  3. It doesn't matter what rifle or calibre or intended use, scope should always be as sensibly close to the barrel as possible. Obviously consideration must be given to practicalities and individual gun fit, that's what sensibly means above. :hmm:
  4. A 22-250 isn't a target calibre, but it is generally fast, that is largely the point of it, so relatively speaking it is likely to wear out barrels quicker than a lot of other slower calibres. How significant or important that is for the individual depends on their intended use of the calibre and the depth of their pocket. I have seen 243 ammo loaded to touch 4000ft sec, don't expect that barrel to last long either with hard use!
  5. You can destroy virtually any new centrefire day one if you work at it, the fact this is 24 years old is meaningless, he may only have used it for 24 shots, one a year!
  6. And where would I use my WMR... every site has its own characteristics and I run a business, I need to select the most appropriate tools and ammo I sensibly can for every site, distance is far from the only consideration, just the same I am easy to stretch the HMR and WMR to 100 yards, maybe a little further on the fox, but that is because I use them, and the ammo a lot, including regular target (zeroing) work with expanding ammo at the range. The HMR often takes the place of the .22lr in small gardens with 17g V-Max, the noise isn't a problem, all my rifles have moderators and the extra one
  7. This crops up all the time, and the OP is about as sensible as saying I want a car to drive, what is suitable! I use shotguns, 3 different calibre rimfires and any of my selection of centrefires on fox. Currently there is a thread just below this that has a .22lr for fox approved by the police, and they work, so why are people saying a HMR is no good and you need a centrefire......... as always, you select the right tool and ammo for the specific job. I don't take my .308 when I am leaning out of a bedroom window shooting foxes at 10 metres in a pocket handkerchief, terrace house garden, li
  8. Quite correct, do they list Deer CLOSE when they issue a 22 cf for them, or a bit further away when they issue a .243, or even further when you get a .308. These terms are stupid and meaningless, you shoot within your ability and whatever rifle/ammo that you have in your hands.
  9. Brand new and unused, unwanted gift, it's the wrong one for my 452. Please note this is a 5 shot HMR/WMR plastic magazine specifically for a 455, it does not fit the previous models. List price is £33, for sale at £22 posted to UK mainland.
  10. I tend to agree, but that does not change the legal position. Authority is all you need, verbal is fine, tell your region to go ask the guy if they doubt you! You simply have to show them good reason, like I said, your region, and no doubt others, are flexing muscles they don't have, and few if any have the balls to question them! Show me one piece of Firearms legislation that says you must provide written consent to get/renew a FAC! Indeed, ask your region to supply you with the legislation that says you must supply them with WRITTEN permission! They will no doubt get upse
  11. Well your area must be different to mine, in south yorks, if you apply for a fac for vermin/deer on private land, and do not provide evidence of written permission, you will not be granted the certificate, simple as that. I quite agree it is not needed for shooting, and I must have a dozen farms where I have verbal permission to shoot only, perhaps I am foolish? But that is how some of my landowners like it, and I for one respect that, it is their choice to write a letter or not. Charlie I am not suggesting for a minute your region does not make life hard for you, but they work from
  12. So I did. Let me remind you of the OP...... "Whats the crack on written permission for a. 22lr do you have to have written permission by the landowners or just the land deemed suitable by the cheif ? .22lr is not a normally deer legal calibre, does that help? .22lr is only legal on deer in extreme cases of humane despatch and you do not need written permission for that! Some of us are trying to address the question, what has a small section of the Deer Act got to do with the OP? You do not need written permission to shoot deer, you need it for shooting them out of season,
  13. Let me be clear here for those who have not read my posts earlier in this thread. I am not suggesting you shouldn't get written permission, indeed I have said it can be useful, I am simply making the point that it is not a legal necessity for shooting or getting a FAC!
  14. :hmm: You do not need written permission to shoot deer. You simply have to comply with additional conditions if you want to shoot them out of season! What clear direction is that and how does it relate to .22lr, small ground game and vermin? As regards the rest of your post, I'm struggling to see any connection to written permission?
  15. The OP is talking about .22lr, what has the Deer Act and the specific terms under which you can shoot deer out of season got to do with .22lr?
  16. That is a section of the Deer Act relating to the terms under which deer may be shot out of season, what has that got to do with the subject at hand!
  17. Most popular and maligned? Tricky one, I do not know the ratio, but there are still substantially more .22lr out there than HMR, and certainly I have had more issues with .22lr ammo over the years than HMR. Can't remember ever having a split case on a .22lr though, but plenty with HMR, although it has never effected the shot, and I have never had a HMR bullet stuck in my barrel, but I have a .22lr. Hardly scientific and the luck of the draw perhaps! HMR.................... Most popular and maligned?
  18. Blimey guys, it was a simple question........ "Perhaps those of you who have said you need the landowners written permission could point me in the direction of any legislation that says that. Some regions ask for it and it is without doubt useful, but verbal permission is fine legally." The answer is simple, there is no legal requirement, and even if we accept a written consent is useful for your region and generally (and I have made no suggestion to the contrary), that doesn't make it a legal requirement and it doesn't mean it is essential for every other piece of land you may pick up.
  19. Flippen ek, this goes round as often as the picture of the fox shooting a rifle. Hornady (made by CCI together with many other branded HMR ammo) and everyone who has any remote connection with the manufacture of HMR ammo is well aware of this, and split cases, and every other issue the HMR (and many other calibres can throw up). Some magazine damage has been reported from this problem, but no barrel has ever blown up and nobody has ever had any injuries other than shock from my understanding. Feel free to post any pictures of blown up HMR barrels or stomach churning personal injuries cause
  20. Perhaps those of you who have said you need the landowners written permission could point me in the direction of any legislation that says that. Some regions ask for it and it is without doubt useful, but verbal permission is fine legally.
  21. In principle Yes! If you make it clear it is your intention to sell your region may be able to help with a temporary Certificate, but they are not usually mad keen on the idea, so if you are heading the route of a paid variation, stick as much on there as you can think of, 1 extra slot or 10, the cost is £26!
  22. :hmm: It's called a 1 for 1, all regions use the same rules. It is free if you simply give up one slot and replace it with another, there is only a charge if you want to increase the number of slots!
  23. Flippen ek...6 pages and still going... .243 is an excellent and versatile calibre for fox and deer with the variety of ammo available. Start there and you will find out for yourself if it works for you!
