  1. Compare .204 32g V-Max (actually most of the .204) and .243 58g V-Max. http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/ballistics/2013-Standard-Ballistics.pdf With regards flat shooting they are VERY similar. As before though, you need to get what you want!
  2. There is no minimum calibre, energy, speed, ammo type, etc etc etc for fox in this country. If you have FAC Air and your FAC says Any Lawful Quarry against it, that is legal for Fox, however you want to look at it. Moving on...................... if you don't want to use it on fox, fine, if you can't find the right situation to use it, fine, if it isn't the right tool in almost every situation then fine, but it is suitable for fox in limited situations and is legal to use on fox! There is nevertheless potential for problems under a mass of cruelty legislation, but that is only if cruel
  3. The .204 is a cracking piece of kit if you can make it work for you, and you have a use it suits. The main one I was involved with was a pig, a Howa as well, which tend to be ok/decent, (it went back for a barrel change under warranty), then, even with a new barrel all manner of factory and home brews were tried before it got close to being sensibly accurate, never was, and presented issues in the field with its barrel length, and the whole point of the .204 is speed/trajectory, unlike many calibres, chopping the barrel will potentially have a significant effect on this. There are mixed r
  4. We used to throw stones, then spears then bows and arrows ....times move on, there are better suited calibres/ammo today for field work! What make/type of .303 rifle have you got? SP and V-Max types are available if you can find them, but why, ammo isn't that easy to come by and there is certainly not the weight/type choice of many other calibres, yes they will kill things, so will a 416 Rigby, if you want a bit of nostalga then crack on! The .303 is a relic, fondly enjoyed by a few still, nothing wrong with that, but it's 2014 now!
  5. Yes chap, visiting the range and experimenting can be very interesting, perhaps you should try it some time, accuracy was appalling, but I least I got it on the black, eventually, and I have caught some decent fish too! :D
  6. The .204 is a relatively niche market. There are those that rate it and it suits their applications but to get the best out of it you need to be very fortunate with factory ammo or load your own, then you have to leave the barrel looooong. There are plenty of other choices, do you really need to shoot corvids and bunnies at great distances, few of us really need to, if it is a test of your abilities try the range, I have used my HMR at 600 yards! The .243 is incredibly versatile and the 55-58g V-Max ammo for it is a pussy cat to shoot, and devastating in the right circumstances, then you
  7. Based on my experience I wouldn't even consider a .303 for hunting and gamekeeping on a large amount of land in the Scottish Highlands. What led you to that choice?
  8. Any Lawful Quarry means Any Lawful Quarry! Why should anything about range (distance) be a bit more clear, it stands to reason a HMR is not a long range tool, why does that need making more clear, does your FEO say don't use your .243 or .308 further than 500-600 yards? Just to add a bit here in your specific case, why on earth would you want fox added, or even had a debate with your FEO about fox, when you have Any Lawful Quarry. Regardless of anyones concept of the meaning of Vermin, you have ANY Lawful Quarry, why is there any debate about fox, your FAC is conditioned for it u
  9. The possibilities are the world could end tomorrow and I could win the lottery, both are far more likely than the police bringing a case against someone for shooting a fox under a vermin condition on a FAC. I don't give a jot what you do for a living, I have taken on a whole Firearms Dept, Chief Constable and Force solicitor and won. The terms of his FAC have been listed and are defined in the English Language. There is no case for a region to bring, they have worded it badly if they meant vermin NOT to include fox, so any court/judge would throw it out, there will never be a case to d
  10. Any Lawful Quarry means Any Lawful Quarry! Why should anything about range (distance) be a bit more clear, it stands to reason a HMR is not a long range tool, why does that need making more clear, does your FEO say don't use your .243 or .308 further than 500-600 yards?
  11. The FEO told him he could shoot a close range fox BUT WOULD NOT condition the ticket for it! why? Probably because Fox is vermin, his FAC is conditioned for vermin and so there is no need for fox to be listed! :D
  12. Seems to me the only person here unclear of what vermin means is you. The police do not/will not, need to bring a case to court for clarity, vermin is defined in the English language. Nobody is pushing any boundary, if your FAC says vermin, then you can shoot fox, as the OP has already been told by his FEO, which part of that says vermin is not fox and needs clarification?
  13. There is no letter of the law, vermin has not been defined in law because there have been no prosecutions, there will not be either, first off, because the word vermin is defined in the English Language, and second, because it would not be in the public interest to bring a case. His FAC is conditioned for Vermin, vermin is defined in the English language to include Fox, hence he is complying with his FAC conditions. The Home Office Guide is a GUIDE! Dictionary definition, in the Public Domain ver·min (vûr′mĭn) n. pl. vermin 1. Various small animals or insects, such as rats or cockroac
  14. It usually states on your ticket what your allowed to shoot. If you have All Lawful Quarry, then you're ok. If not and you have eg. vermin, ground game and other small quarry against the HMR. Then you can't shoot fox (its regarded as medium quarry). Some would argue its vermin but I'm using the headings from the Firearmas Guidance Tables as It's these the police would most likely rely on in Court. He has already been told it is ok to shoot Fox with his HMR by his FEO. Argue as much as you want about fox being Medium quarry, any size description does not change it status, fox
  15. HMR Barrel Length vs. Velocity 22 inch = 2517 fps, 103 fps spread 21 inch = 2523 fps, 66 fps spread 20 inch = 2515 fps, 86 fps spread 19 inch = 2538 fps, 83 fps spread 18 inch = 2522 fps, 41 fps spread 17 inch = 2505 fps, 43 fps spread 16 inch = 2492 fps, 53 fps spread 15 inch = 2477 fps, 27 fps spread 14 inch = 2432 fps, 70 fps spread 13 inch = 2419 fps, 32 fps spread 12 inch = 2387 fps, 57 fps spread 11 inch = 2338 fps, 45 fps spread 10 inch = 2276 fps, 45 fps spread Shamelessly stolen from Varmint Als site. Who knows about the accuracy of this, some figures seem to leave questions!
  16. I have read the pinned Crayfish thread, very useful! A bit more if anyone can help me please. Never tried but fancy a go, I have water and application to the EA is done. Any advice on net type, good, bad, those to avoid, seems a lot of price variation around the web. Who knows if I will take to this, so I'm not looking for Rolls Royce equipment to start with but would like to avoid rubbish. Oh yes, and what bait do you recommend, it will be river use. Any other advice, tips, hints on how best to catch much appreciated Many thanks.
  17. If your FAC is not Open it will contain words along the lines of...by the Chief Officer of Police, your mate isn't him!
  18. As paulus above.....and unless you know for sure the land is cleared you need to check, he may have had an Open FAC!
  19. I have Tikkas in .223 and .243 and was advised against a Remington 700 in .308 due to it being so inferior to the Tikka. I was a little nervous but after a good look around went for one, that was 6-7 years ago, barrel length was an immediate issue and I had about 3.5-4" (can't remember exactly now) cut straight off the barrel, the stock is original, as is the whole of the rest of the rifle, and it is has the X-Mark Pro trigger. It does for me and delivers PRVI 150g SP to 1" all day! I hate floor plates though, give me a magazine every time, that is my only niggle. I am yet to find the pa
  20. :hmm: Plenty of BA have 10 shot mags that stick out a bit, if you don't want a 25/50 shot banana on a semi don't use one!?
  21. Can you help please, what is all that malarkey around the scope, why is it mounted so high? Cheers
  22. All semis come with inherent issues over bolt action, just the same, commonly much to much is made of it if you are in the bunny bashing business! As CC #4. 10/22 are overrated but have a position, lord knows why they are the market leader, they are not the best out of the box that's for sure! From experience I would take the CZ or Anschutz any day over a 10/22, but I get by just fine with my cheap and cheerful Magtech 7022.
  23. SSG should be fine at Full Choke, just the same I stay at half for my SG. As a matter of interest what use do you have for SSG? Cheers
  24. The Fluted/rifled slugs is designed to compress to accommodate tight chokes, if it only stopped 3" from the barrel end I suggest under cartridge pressure it would be fine, that is what they are designed for!
  25. As CharlieT has mentioned the main use of the rifled/fin look on slugs is to allow for assorted chokes, these tend to give the slug only a little spin!
