  1. This is a very useful GUIDE, which will give guidance to the Police and others on a lot related to Firearms! But note, it is actually a GUIDE which quotes a bit of Law! It is designed to help the Police regions administer the Law in a similar manner to each other, and steer punters in the right direction, large parts have nothing specifically to do with the Law and are yet to be tested in the Courts. ATB!
  2. Perhaps not "argue" Put your views across definitely. Tell them to put everything in black and white and their reasons for refusal, definitely. If they refuse you a centrefire and you have the "good reason" and the land to use it on, send all correspondence to BASC or whoever you use and let them sort it out, Do not be bullied by a firearms department that know little about how firearms are used in the field. Take whatever someone from a firearms departments says about firearms certificates, halve it, then halve it again. You may be closer to the truth. DSC is bollocks.
  3. steven35 Personally I believe the electronic high pitch units should be banned, they are simply a con. In my experience the best they do is have a very short term effect then everything comes back, at worst they do nothing. I have attended many a job where householders have bought these and then had to call me to do the job properly.
  4. HMR has plenty of ammo issues in all forms, and it isn't a rumour, it is well known and accepted since day one by all the manufacturers.
  5. This is 12mm Building steel, hit with various calibres/ammo at 100 yards, it will not be long before they punch their way through. Front and rear view.
  6. :hmm: What may be easy for some is impossible for others, don't be too hasty to jump in. My furthest rabbit with a HMR was 258 yards witnessed and confirmed on a range finder, another pal took one at 285 yards. These are one off shots and I would never suggest that was the norm, the circumstances and situation came together to allow these shots. I have taken many a rabbit at 160 yards with my HMR but I would again suggest that if anyone considers they need that distance regularly they should consider something more than a HMR, possibly a .17 or .22 Hornet. Most of my shots are
  7. Can you just add a +1 to most of your posts, it seems you are taking the words out of mouth a lot recently!
  8. The same as any other centrefire and some rimfires! As with charlie caller, I'm not aware of any lead hornet ammo, aren't they all coated, have I missed something or is someone else getting confused?
  9. Romax Rat CP I note it says Soft Block on the container but I consider it a big pasta type!
  10. I have never actually gone out specifically after rabbits with CF, and my rabbit work is Pest Control, any thoughts about meat are secondary, just the same I don't know anyone who goes out with the intention of making a serious mess of their quarry! The end result on a rabbit/etc can vary considerably and it is quite rare they are actually destroyed in such a total way, cf can commonly make very little mess of some wildlife. I hit a rabbit at around 200 yards with my .308 150g SP and it simply made a neat hole right through it, no destruction whatsoever. It will all depend on a lot o
  11. As the years roll by I believe the choice of Make is getting less and less important, the difference between makes when it comes to general field use is decreasing, there simply are no BAD ones out there! Perhaps more important considerations are synthetic or wood, heavy or light!
  12. Have I missed something, has the policy changed, are we not allowed to post these sort of images anymore?
  13. It makes the difference of how steep that angle is! This of course is exaggerated by lower powered ammo over long distance shots, compared to higher powered ammo on closer shots! If your quarry is always up this hill stay zeroing there, if not zero on the flat!
  14. Seems as though you are getting to like that 22-250! They can make a mess, this was a year or two back, about 180 yards I seem to remember with a .223 V-Max. This was a .243 V-Max, a bit closer. Both a single shot!
  15. Have I missed something, do you mean the Romax Rat 100g rectangular pasta type sachet (it is quite hard), is there a solid block these days? Most sites will get Difenacoum or Bromadiolone based baits depending on the survey, but I have certainly noticed what I consider a resistance on more than one site, usually move on to Coumatetralyl if needed.
  16. I have had a goodly few Wasp jobs over the years that I have talked the caller out of, lord knows why, I don't see any much overall reduction in them, certainly goes up and down a fair bit from season to season though! "oliver said bees were protected" Perhaps he would like to elaborate on that!
  17. :hmm: It doesn't matter what your intended use of the rifle will be, breaking in a barrel properly can only ever do good! There are numerous guides around that tell you how to do it. Do what you like, ALL my rifles get run in, even dedicated .22lr sub sonic barrels. They are also kept clean!
  18. This is a very common problem, perhaps it should be pinned! Just a few of mine, and it effects ALL makes! From Bob Palmer at Hornady, Published in Shooting UK 2007 "CCI makes the cases for all the .17 HMR ammo and loads it for the different companies. When they make the cases they draw the case out to a .22mag case that has a straight wall. Then the priming compound is put in the rim of the case. The case is spun to put the primer evenly in the rim. After the priming is complete the case mouth is reduced to the .17 calibre to hold the bullet. The reduction process, however, puts stres
  19. There are loads of reasons why ballistic programs are, at best a guide, as several have mentioned, they are perhaps even less accurate than your maths above...have another look or use a different calculator! ATB!
  20. It makes me cringe when I read things like this OP. If the gun was new it should be broken in, and if it was used it should have been stripped bare and cleaned day one! Whatever anyone wants to tell you the only way to keep your rifle sweet is to clean it THOROUGHLY and regularly, including action/bolt/moderator, even woodwork! If you rarely use it, never push the distance, are prepared for less than best performance and don't care about reduced barrel life then don't bother to clean it. That is a fact, I am not preaching and those many issues are simply not an issue to some
  21. In America rifles are disposable items, the less you clean them the more rifles your Gunsmith acquaintance will sell/repair!
  22. You have a "good reason" for a centrefire so apply for one, it's as simple as that. I don't hold with the myth that you wont be granted a centrefire on first application, it is a rumour and nothing more. A centrefire and a .22LR would be ideal by the sounds of things. SS is spot on. This myth persists because people let the Firearms department get away with it, and the more you do the more they will flex muscles they don't have, if you have the appropriate reason you should be granted whatever you want, so ask for it.
  23. I'll be the first to hold my hand up then...never seen one of them! Who did you get it from and what did they say it is for, it does look like that is to tilt the scope for long range, either that or to fit an odd shaped action! :hmm:
  24. I seem to have missed the reference to cast bullets, but you are going to have to find a new metal/allow over lead to get any sort of result out of them at normal 22-250 speeds! There is a very good reason most CF have a copper coat, especially the particularly fast ones!
