I agree totally. It was just an observation. I respect what those lads have done. And considering most on here do f**k all ..... ?

This is the thing. It’s like rabbits, if you showed me a photo of a dog stood down here with 20 rabbits I’d be more impressed than if you showed me a photo of a lad with a dog stood in a gateway to a walled field in Yorkshire. Same with deer, knock a fallow in a small ish field somewhere, with double fenced hedges, while you stand in the only gate? Or knock same fallow screaming across a 100 acre field heading for the wood that’s got no hedge or fence at it.......

No that’s why I said think. Genuine question / opinion. I’ve never really got them, got plenty of mates who have them and have had them, and go out with a couple regular. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying they are shit, just over hyped and don’t get the attraction really. Found that mostly another type can do what they do better. Like I said I fully expect to get a load of flack.

Large hare population in fenced and walled fields, on the lamp? Would those dogs have killed Double figure hares a week on decent sized arable land, no fences etc, on the lamp? Genuine question. I’ve noticed (and it’s taken a while ?) that there are some people who do a hell of a lot of travelling, and often have amazing dogs, some are amazing coz of the graft they see, others look amazing as they are taken to the right ground ........

Personally think it’s one of the most over rated types of Lurcher you can get, and I can’t see anything they can do that something else couldn’t do better and where there would be more chance of a well bred one. Tin hat on!

Did he press a extra 0 at end by mistake, f**k sake!!!
SheepChaser replied to hang & bang's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
It was mad mate, french bull dogs, cocker pops, golden retrievers etc etc all kinds of stuff that would have been very expensive to buy, chucked in there when it stopped being a pup and started being a young dog! I think the issue is, the kind of special case who thinks buying a cockerpoo for £1500 probably doesn’t actually have much concept of what keeping a dog means, and they think they will be like a teddy for life. -

Not true. Used to live next to a rescue centre and they had just as many abandoned and handed on dogs that were of the very expensive type as anything else. -
The whole Keep it on a leaf all the time thing....... does keeping it on a lead all the time not lead to a wound up dog? Dont see any problem with running with the dog off lead, just avoid civilians and their dogs. I hate running into folk walking pets when I’m out with my two, my main concern is that the little shit eater will start something that my two will finish before I could get them off. At the end of the day you’ve a 15 month, male, bull x, a bit of social boundary pushing and giving it the big I am, comes with the territory. Could easily just be the case

I’m guessing he could be in North America or Canada ?

Most farmers don’t really care about the stuff getting caught. I’m too busy and too tired to go worrying about someone lamping a hare or whatever. But round here it goes hand in hand with thieving and general hassle. Even this time of year we have folk out, in growing crops, with a vehicle and multiple dogs, running hares, driving through fences and stealing stuff. Battery’s and energisers off electric fences are a favourite. On the upside they do dump random things. Recently we had a load of fishing gear and also a drum kit.

Same everywhere. And it’s mostly the same people. It’s embarrassing to be fair.

We’ve talked about it so many times, I’d be really keen, but sadly the nature of our operation doesn’t allow it. Too many folk wandering about, our main yard is open to main road, has a wedding business etc etc. My actual house yard, currently isn’t secure and I have neighbours. I did have an nice big farm yard of my own till December and we were fencing it in, to have a free roaming guard. But sadly they sold the farm and yard for development!
-
Guard dogs are a funny thing. Don’t see too many set ups where it’s that necessary or practice to have a man eater ? most would just be a detterant? Seen one recently that would eat anyone other than its handler. There is no way in hell you’d get in a yard with it or even out of your motor. Which is great until the lead snaps, he drops it, or some kid climbs into his yard etc

People always defend the travellers but around here 90% of the hassle we get is from them. f***ing nightmare to be honest, and the police don’t do f**k all. Need to be able to shoot on sight ?

Looking at getting into bushing advice welcome
SheepChaser replied to the lamping ferreter's topic in Bushing Dogs
Do folk really have an issue with bushers catching in cover? It’s interesting how different people want different things from a dog. -
How many free pups get sold on? Or does it not happen because it was free, so they must be a proper Lurcher man.
-
Agreed. A circle of friends giving pups out amongst themselves is a bit different than just giving excess pups to ransoms for free because “you shouldn’t charge for a Lurcher pup”. I gave away an 18 month collie bitch yesterday, to a lad who does some work for me, and I’m sure a few favours will come back. Last Lurcher pup was gifted free from a mate, and I make sure I put as much hunting in front of him and his dogs whenever he visits. Just picked up a busher pup off a mate, he wanted nothing for it. Gave his Mrs £100 quid and dagged out some sheep for her. The pup was incredib

Looking for the right Stud dog.

I know mate ? -
OIf anyone looked at the litter in the initial post and went for one thinking it was a litter of working Lurchers then they are thick! I totally agree with you by the way, with regard to breeding working dogs
-
Man has a cocker..... breeds her to a cocker. Man has 6 cocker pups, sells them for £500 each which is a normal price for them. He’s ok? Man has cocker.... breeds her to a poodle. Man has 6 cockerpoo pups, sells them for £1500 each which is a normal price for them. He’s bad? Whats the difference?
-
It wasn’t a dig mate. And I agree Lurchers age money don’t mix. A lot of the time pups are gifted amongst friends. But what if you breed a good litter and have a couple excess pups? Feels like if you charge anything at all, you’re a bad bad man, and what you should do is put them on THL, free to members, as that would make you a proper Lurcher man ....... ? Dont really see anything wrong in charging 150 or so got a decent pup to a stranger. It’s a dog that’s going to hopefully last a long time, if they kick off about a couple hundred quid ........ seems a bit strange
-
Fail ? Rehome? Dogs having an ignorant moment. It’s a young dog in summer after first season. If folk get rid of dogs for stuff like this ...... huh?
-
Nail on head. They will be pet homes or ‘sporting’ homes
-
Always an interesting one. It’s funny how in plenty cases folk almost see you as a bad person if you charge anything for a pup.
