  1. That's true, they could shoot you and the dogs, in a remote area nobody would hear it or not take any notice because everyone around shoots. When the kids were young if someone did take me out at least they had some protection from the dogs and they are a great deterrent in most cases. I didn't bother getting anymore guard dogs now the big dogs have passed on, the Parsons are very alert watch dogs and let you know. I think it's everyone's own choice what they own, not the governments, they would be happy if we had nothing to protect ourselves with so we become sheep and do as we're told.
  2. I've heard of wire fox terriers killing babies, it would only take one bite. The risk of owning protection dogs like I had and them attacking my kids was extremely small. When you live hours from any help these dogs are invaluable. As I said there is always a slight risk. I've owned these breeds for over 45 years. Same with dogs like Boerboels in Africa, they could kill anyone quite easily but they don't own them for nothing. These type of dogs don't belong in suburbia though. I agree these dogs being called nanny dogs is misleading to uneducated people looking for a dog, they are serious prot
  3. Have you ever owned pitbulls before? I'd hardly call it naive when I've spent the majority of my life with bull breeds and none have shown aggression to the family in any form. Humans are far more dangerous than dogs. When you live in isolated areas over here a sighthound isn't going to cut it protecting your family, you need man stopping dogs with stable temperaments.
  4. I have a theory the reason so many people are turning gay, trans, lbqtxyz is something to do with the earth trying to stop people breeding before we are all fcked. Nature, god or whatever runs the show.
  5. Because I know the dogs, educate the kids and watch them. A fox terrier could kill a kid, they have and would also be a lot more likely to attack than a bull breed. There is always a small chance but in the situation I was in the dogs were needed and it would have been a lot less safe without them. The dogs I had to watch the most around the kids were the lurcher types.
  6. Unfortunately APBT's and Am Bullies appeal to a lot of people with little care for others, with their ego topping the charts. It's a real shame because the vast majority of these dogs are good family dogs and would die protecting them. Nothing is dangerous if it's kept under control and handled correctly. I raised my kids around pits and bandogs and never saw so much as a raised lip towards any of the family in 30 odd years. I believe most people shouldn't own these breeds, they just don't keep an eye on the animals and they should be left to experienced dog people.
  7. I've had a few whippet crosses that never marked, they would just stand back and let the old dog mark but stood ready once the ferrets were entered.
  8. I had an Oz staghound that showed no interest in game at all, even running roos until he was 18 months and then one day it just clicked. Don't know what yours is but some of those deerhound types take a while to mature. Yeah just keep taking her out, only a pup still.
  9. A lot of people liked it , I'm not into war movies. Only movie I liked Brad Pitt in was Snatch.
  10. I agree a lot who own these dogs are doing it to boost their ego mostly but it's got to do also with how violent society is getting. People are genuinely scared they are going to be mugged, stabbed or whatever and it's illegal to carry a weapon to defend themselves but most of these breeds should only be in the hands of enthusiasts with a lot of experience. Dogs do stop more violent acts than they cause, by far, so disarming people of their guardian dogs isn't going to stop deaths and injuries, it will create more. It's a difficult situation and a sad world now.
  11. When my blue dog died I lost a bit of my heart, I only pick around now with two terriers and a whip/grey but I'm getting old so that's ok. I might be a bit mad but I got her cremated and want my ashes scattered when I go with hers in the hills we hunted.
  12. Yeah fred 3/4 whippet. Oz stags are greyhound/ deerhound from the old days but most have other breeds added.
  13. I agree you should be allowed to own a protection breed but you need to have an apprenticeship with dogs before owning one. The dogs were doing their jobs, the cops were pathetic.
  14. My two whippet/stags , full sisters from different litters. My best rabbit dogs ever, blue girl my best dog. Blue one died at 9 the black one at 2. I'll never get better ones.
  15. As far as I know they have added bull blood into many hunting dogs, terriers, pig dogs and even whippets to get that little bit extra, then go back. It's a good thing to add imo as long as it doesn't dominate and alter the original too much and take away the attributes of the original breed.
  16. I couldn't either dodger it was too weird. Brad Pitts accent was fcken annoying.
  17. Where the Crawdads Sing, the mrs got me to watch it, sounded a bit lame but was the best movie I'd seen for quite a while.
  18. I don't think so either, most dogs hate pigs and plenty will tackle them. The whippets will grab them. You need b ig strong dogs if you take pig catching seriously and want your dogs to live a while. Look how many jagd get killed in Europe on boars. Being too game and catching pigs doesn't go hand in hand.
  19. Yeah, I used to catch them as a kid on the Paramatta river in Sydney, it was badly polluted in those days but the eels thrived. I never weighed them but they were big and would release them. It turned me off eating them until a mate gave me some from a clean river, smoked. He reckons because they are oily they smoke up good, same as mullet.
  20. Yeah I wasn't taking anything away from your bitch, she's a beautiful terrier and I'd like a dog like her. My mrs used to catch pigs for export as a job. She used big dogs, mastiff/dane/English bull crosses mainly and they caught plenty. The trend now is for the lighter built Bullarabs, still big but leaner, usually a mix of English bull, pointer and greyhound usually around 35 to 40kg. Also English bull/Oz staghounds are popular. You can use anything on pigs, I used to have to watch the whippets when I was rabbiting and pigs about but the small dogs get knocked around and when you are catchin
  21. I live like that and it's good you are starting out small and progressing to bigger game. You can supply your own food off a fairly small area, chickens are a must for meat, eggs and manure for your garden, the best farm animal imo. Also quail for the same, they are the most cost efficient and quick turn over meat source. Hunting can be expensive with fuel, ammo and dogs if you have them. Could possibly swap eggs, veg for meat or other items. I still need to buy stuff so I work part time for cash, you need some.
  22. I have never had much luck with cage trapping rabbits but you could try spraying the cages with apple juice plus try different baits. Rabbits might not be very smart but their sense of danger is out of this world.
  23. I didn't either until I had some eel a Maori mate put in the smoker, choice bro ?
  24. Went pig hunting with a mate years ago in pines and his dogs ran into a family of feral dogs with pups. His dogs were the old type mastiff/bull terriers and they killed the lot of the ferals including pups. The noise was terrible. These same dogs ignored domestic pet dogs.
