Yep it was only to have a commercial vehicle to claim some tax against ,vans and pickups you don't get much for your buck for that reason and medium vans are too small for me, my Volvo is hanging on done 225k I think, I'd rather an estate car ,much better value but only claim for 30% of cost  , it's likely work will sort me a vehicle at some point so I'll most likely stick to an affordable estate.

I bought a hilux new I’ve had a pick up since I passed my test had lots, my lad hit a low cut stump fuked the side bad, used and abused lamping and I hit a transit on the lane head on, expanding foam and cable ties with tec screws it looked a pro repair. £27000 plus vat turned to 4800 in 4 yrs.

I to have an X-Trail and I like it a lot find it quite economic to be fair and my second one. Put some town and country style tires on it (buzz a bit) but good for bit of logging, ferreting and fishing etc. Even slept in it at the fishing comps with the seats down and an air bed. I'm retired now but would have loved to have had one when i was self employed, used to have an estate though. Although I could have claimed more for a van not much fun for the family.

Imo loans kill you I took one out after Thatchers recession to just pay my tax off. It was like a mill stone around my neck hell of a job to move forward. I did in the end worked hard put some by for hard times and retirement. I have never paid on the never never if I couldn't afford it we didn't have it. Watch my parents do it waste pay packet way in the bookies and the pub never having f**k all. Swore I would never be like that. We do have a credit card for protection when you buy stuff but always paid off when due but thats it.

My parents were abysmal with cash, absolute pair of knackers, hiding from the rent man, provy loans, every Christmas paid for by catalogue, I never had a credit card, never had one single loan in my life apart from mortgages because you can't actually walk into a bank with readies and pay for a property, finances should be taught from an early age at school.

My old mum died a couple of days ago, aged 92.

She used to tell me never get in debt for anything. If you can't afford it, you don't need it, or save up for it and pay cash. By the time you've saved up for something, you'll probably find you don't want or need it anyway.

Her and dad bought their council house years ago fo £13.5 k, they payed cash, almost their entire life's savings, they refused to "have a mortgage hanging round their necks" ! Offered to buy it for them but they said it wouldn't feel right. They wanted something to leave the four kids, but sadly the government made her sell it to pay the £800 a week the care home she was put in charged.

Talking to a self employed delivery van driver yesterday who had just secured a 35 grand loan for a new van and then management on his case for not getting a bigger van that would have cost him 45 grand. I hope we don't hit a bad recession as it's lad's like him who will be crucified setting all that debt on.

I own a 2005 LandCruiser very reliable and big it’s an 8 seater so with all the seating down its also a van you wouldn’t believe what I’ve had in the back of it, it’s paid for and the reason I got a 2005 is because as soon as you jump to 2006+ it’s a different tax bracket it’s my hunting vehicle and normal use vehicle.

I learnt years ago the hard way with debt I now owe no one nothing only utility bills no credit cards just my debit card my money.

As Mack says travel is definitely the way to enhance life experiences I always say when your on your deathbed you will not be thinking of your 65” TV or your flash motor but people you’ve met and experiences you’ve had, good thread by the way and nice to see it’s reached 4 pages without WW3 kicking off

wankers in charge  chart aren’t they been better staying council tenants and still having savings to leave 

most of the old uns are to proud would rather go in a home then have there kids cleaning up there shit after them 

with that and inheritance tax people be lucky to leave out for there family

Also it doesn’t hurt kids to not have everything they want. I didn’t have a lot growing up . There were things I wanted, like a new bike . But I could see that my parents couldn’t afford a lot , so when they asked what I would like from Santa I was realistic with my expectations. 
           A lot of people can grow up and think that “because I didn’t have much , I’m going to give my kids everything they want , even if I can’t afford it “. 
              I look around me at family and friends and I don’t think it is good for kids to have too much . I know some horrible spoilt kids , and I’m ashamed to say I’m related to some of them .
