Think i have mentioned it before only met Plummer once when he was signing books at Chatsworth show in the 80s and he came across similar to how a company director in some cases talks to those below him. Though the old boys from my area who spent time in his company when he lived in Rotherham always said he was smarter than the average bear.

I'd say he must have been smart/intelligent to have written and marketed his books the way he did.

Evidently he was the most stolen author from libraries at one time !

We all know he used huge amounts of "poetic lisence", (some would say plagiarism), but his books were required reading for most young lads starting out in the game !

I never met him , but know one first hand tale; he came up to Lemington in Northumberland to interview some pals of mine for one of his books, and possibly buy some game birds and miniature working jack Russell's from them.

After listening to him for about ten minutes, the literally threw him out of the pub. They had no time for bullshitters !

At the beginning of this thread there's a lad who refers to him as "Mr Plummer" and appears to think he was some sort of God. Guess he was just a young lad with some spare hero worship to get rid of.

I can well imagine Plummer  addressing others as inferiors. I suppose the game he got into: lurchers and ferreting, are traditionally working class pursuits. So he no doubt thought he was superior as he was from a middle  class background, in a middle class job,  and was, in effect slumming it with us peasants----- "educating"  us in the process. I think he would have got right up my nose!

 But as a lot of lads have said., he saw an opportunity in the market. Churned out a lot of books on others' experiences and, in the process, entertained and encouraged  youngsters to get involved in fieldsports. Before the Shooting News, the only access we had to lurcher literature were the ads in Exchange and Mart, so his articles were interesting to a lot of us. It's only in hindsight we realise he was a plonker.

Old plummer always had that school teacher thing about him, that never offended me, as im not that insecure especially in the field or around working dogs, plenty of fakes in the dog game, always as been, always will be.

Shooting news wasn't that much, I wrote a couple of articles, 4 or 5 I think, can't remember how much the cash was, £18?£20? Certainly wasn't life changing, but the number of books he churned out could have bought his cottage if he was publishing them himself, and his teachers salary to top it off, he wasn't skint unless he had a secret crack and hooker habit he was keeping under wraps

If he had brass you certainly couldn't see it around him, dont think you would write books to a very limited amount of readers if motivated by money alone, that said he was jew blooded

Loads of people like that though, I have an acquaintance who to all appearances is a dossier, looks like he lives in a squat (currently he may look OK as he is serving four and a half years), but he has a collection of watches valued at well over a million quid. Ya just never know with people.
