  1. a mate of mine was playing a decent pike on the trent and a bigger one tried to take it when I netted it it had f king great bite marks in it.
  2. one of the most difficult decisions in keeping lurchers SHOULD be weather to bread or not, but often as in your case you bred the bitch and want to breed a better dog from it, we all strive to improve our dogs, but the foult may pass on then where are you, buying in is often the best way, you can bread things like staminer and durability in by using different breads but an actual foult is another matter, and could persist for generations, good luck.
  3. two perfect lurchers can produce rubbish its true but you have more chance if there less than perfect.
  4. we had a big old moon here last night. but I went the night before, first time lamping with a dog in years and the bitch has not been, she ran 4 and cought 2, the two she managed to box of the hedge and back in to the open, great fun, I remember now why I used to go 2 or 3 times a week, its addictive lol.
  5. where did all the irish lads go I know there one or two on but used to be loads on all ways good lough.
  6. they are the same there a couple of outfits run all the lot, I went to two this year, one local where I take the old car in so that's £3, and sandringham and as you say full of townies dressed in country gear with lurchers that don't work, and summerset cider man don't even come no more.
  7. I had an ex track bitch for breading off very good natured and threw some good first crosses to saluki but to say she was reclass fkn hell why you choose grey mate just out of interest.
  8. I haven't lamped with a dog for years, but am going to give it a go this year, I have a light force 170 halogen on the roof, and my mate bought a cluson led about same size and I find identifying stuff at distance better with that, but as been said I think it spooks foxes more, a brighter more powerfull lamp is not the answer you are often moveing stuff off the next field.
  9. a mate of mine had same thing years ago I did it with a syringe cost him nothing.
  10. at the moment the dogs are bringing apples to me all the time, they eat them so after I accept it I give it back, I feel this creates trust and shows I don't want to take every thing away.
  11. most of the gundog boys over do it to, and neglect steadiness, I have a cocker bitch pup here who gets bored with that, and wont retrieve she is rock steady all I do is leave one ore two car dusting mits round the yard and do nothing she will find and retrieve every one every time, without any prompting, she will work two days most weeks all winter with my pack and be a gooden at the end, try letting him retrieve some thing he wants to carry, might work.
  12. I had a chat with a mate only yesterday and he said same as me there are plenty of young coursing dogs being run now and doing 3s and 4s but how many will be doing that in jan?
  13. crops cut 3 weeks early here but ground is hard, my bitch done nothing yet, I live on the land and right in the good bit for what I do, but she be there dead of winter.
  14. people think because they get a particular cross that does well at something they are going to get a gooden, no guarantees in the lurcher game, most crosses brought up round what your doing will pick that up and do just fine, all natural instinct, I don't recall if it was a pup you been offered but if it is you be ok.
  15. this has been an interesting topic to read with so many different views, worming and fleas aside, I believe if a dog is getting a proper balanced diet for the work it is doing it should not need any thing else, if it does your making it do to much simple as that, but each to there own. talking of fleas iv'e had nightmares this year I am now trying diatomaceous earth does any one use this and how do you rate it.
  16. the fast type saluki lurcher will learn to run any land and will know instinctively when it needs to get its finger out, buy from fast parents, avoid feathered, wooly, and tall rangy looking ones, nothing wrong with any of these, but if your looking for a fast one it will help avoid disappointment, as the slower steyers tend to come more from these types.
  17. is he any good if so put him to something like him cant go wrong.
  18. something is telling me to say Arthur low, but its a long time ago we walked about 12 miles to get the bitch mated, and it cost a fiver, the chap in the picture is my wife's uncle, he paid the fiver and he had a pup for it
  19. what a lovely picture that dog reminds me of an old bitch of mine I bred out of a maltby dog called A1 and a coursing bitch in about 1971 ish I have mentiond him a few times I know but I would love to know his breeding.
  20. your right as usual but i cant help thinking swap greyhound for coursing dog still fast more durable better stamina (i think whippets stay better than greyhounds any way) better recovery and the sence to use gears and not go headlong. that's my mother with some of my dogs over 40 years ago they all had some whippet in but the little red bitch was over half and incredibly fast and a long career to.
  21. how is the mother to these pups bred, ive been saying for years that the line bred coursing dog offers so much to the modern lurcher, more so since the ban this kind of breed will be a game changer as far as all rounder's go, any one who can remember coursing dogs 35 40 years back they were still a bit lurchery, and great all rounder's. good luck.
  22. how big is he, nice cross for a little all rounder, and a long career, hope you get the season out of him mate.
  23. looks a handy little dog mate how's he bred.
  24. I often wonder how many dogs have been called jackers by inexperienced people for that very reason.
