  1. Just had a look at some of his vids ! It's appalling ! If shooting song birds were not bad enough his gun safety is frightening. Shooting into the air in a residential area, into neighbouring property, exploding targets in his yard - I bet the neighbours love him - maybe they are too intimidated to complain! I hope he owns the house and it's not rental, then it doesn't matter if he shoots holes in the walls with a pistol. And as for the back yard - looks like a tip ! I'm going to see if I can get onto Birmingham Police web site and let them know. He has been very obliging in posting hi
  2. Tried again this morning and the rifle worked perfectly, just shows what taking a hammer to your front sight can do ! I must say I'm most impressed with the accuracy of the 10/22 out of the box (despite the farting about with the moderator). I have only tried it at 25 yards so far, to make sure I was actually getting on the paper. I've worked out how to use the factory trigger, you squeeze it to about 7 pounds - then you're left with a 2 pound pull ! Popped a Bushnell Banner scope on to try it, it's going to have night vision eventually, rather struggled with the paralax at 25 y
  3. Report him to whoever you can think of !! The police do monitor 'Youtube' etc. My firearms cert. has just been renewed and had a enclosed letter about secruity including the folllowing, relating to social media sites - "some of the postings have cast doubt on the individuals siutability to remain a certificate holder and in a number of cases remedial action has been taken". My RFD tells me some people have had their certificates revoked and firearms removed because of statements posted. One would think blatant slaughter of protected species would merit investigation - after al,l he
  4. I could do with finding some decent dry lube myself, tried today with no success. Moly or teflon if anyone knows of a stockist.
  5. Picked up the 10/22 yesterday, fitted a scope and headed off to try it with a variety of ammo. Imagine my disappointment when it grouped like a shotgun ! At first it was shooting so low I ran out of vertical adjustment on the scope so I headed home and started shimming the rear mount. Next morning it was no different so tried another scope – just the same ! Then I noticed some of the holes were a bit ragged so I took off the moderator and promptly produced a 1 ¼” group – even with the factory trigger. So – was it the moderator or the threading out of line? Headed home again for ano
  6. Thanks for the info. I dismantled and cleaned the lot (they are very well made), I did notice the tip of the firing pin was well worn with little protrubrance and the gun is so old there are no spares available. Tried it this morning with two rounds failing to fire and the bolt not fully closing sometimes - so returned it to the dealer and came away with a new Ruger 10/22. It's a bit cheap and cheerful but I can play with it to improve the accuracy.
  7. I'm trying a used H&K Model 270 .22 semi auto, it's quite old (think they stopped making them about 1987 !). Any thoughts about the quality of these rifles? I tried a few rounds through it (sub sonics) and got some misfires and failures to load. The insides are pretty full of crud round the chamber and bolt face so I was going to give it a good clean and try it again in the morning. Being so old would you thing spares e.g. magazines, firing pins etc. be a problem? It feels great and is well made with a lovely trigger but thats not a lot of use if I have to cosset it!
  8. I'm getting a new Ruger 10/22 this week. Do you recommend cleaning out all the factory lube and relubing? Recomendations for a good brand of lube and which bits need grease and which oil?
  9. Thanks guys ! Hell, Stalker - the rabbits up here don't come as big as the one you've got on your pic !!
  10. This quest for ultimate accuracy! Is it all smoke and mirrors? I’m getting confused! In reality what level of accuracy can be expected from my CZ 453 .17 hmr, factory barrel, standard ammo ( Remington, Hornady, etc.) off a sandbag and with a reasonable level of proficiency and at 100 yards? I can, with a bit of care, usually achieve five rounds in a 1” bull (that’s in a bull, not just grouped somewhere on the paper), sometimes ¾”. Given that my eyesight is not what it used to be is this the best I can expect? The same applies to my Anshutz 1417 .22, 14” barrel shooting subs. All ho
  11. I've just read through the Guide on Firearms Licensing Law 2013. The table on page 119 quite clearly states for "Fox and other mediun quarry" that it is a "Yes" for .17 Remington & HMR, .22 Hornet and WMR – also .22 RF in certain circumstance". This seems to be quite unambigious and not a mistake as .17 Mach2 is not included. Whether an individual would consider .17 HMR suitable for fox is another matter but it would seem any judge faced with the question has definative guidance. The vagaries of different constabulary's firearms departments should not be taken as definative law
  12. Could it be a new set of snares with dodgy wire thats snapping as it kinks? Or sabotage ???
  13. It was a doe but not noticably pregnant, it was the very small intestine, barely 1/4" thick that was moving. I now think it was peristalsis of the involuntary muscle of the gut as this does not need a brain command to act. Anyhow, it's in the fridge ready for a caserole !
  14. I've just been out with my laser torch and .22 and potted a rabbit. Laid it on the floor to gut it and opened it's belly when I noticed it's intestines were still wriggling! I've not seen this before, it went on for quite a while, just the small intestine lifting and turning. I've never noticed this before but I don't usually gut them within a couple of minutes of shooting. Anyone else seen this ?
  15. I'm just about to start using a night vision setup with the aiming screen to one side of the rifle (without a telescope). Any advice on techniques and how to get a steady hold? You can't hold your cheek against the stock as normal and I've seen vids of guys shooting with the stock tucked under their arms, looking down on the screen.
  16. Multi purpose - doubles as a rifle rest !
  17. Well, I watched Richard Uttings reviews and he is adament that the Swift Nightingale in .17 is the bee's knees for this fast little ammo. A big difference over the Sirroco or SAK so I think I'm going to lash out on one - maybe a Swift Stubby as well for the new night .22. After all, it's only money !!!
  18. One thing that put me off some of the models was the extended magazine sticking out of the bottom, looked just right to catch on a belt ot jacket pocket in the dark.
  19. After watching the Youtube vid of the guy squeezing rabbits to gut them I gave it a couple of goes without much success, he must have big hands and arms like a navvy! I really must persevere as it looks a very clean and efficient method. Anyone got any tips ?
  20. Thats pretty good ! Did they just keep coming in? I'm sure the magpies round here know my truck ! A dead rabbit works for me but as soon as I blat one with the hmr the rest are gone for hours, never any close enough for the HW97.
  21. Does anyone use a Swift Precision Nightingale .17hmr sound moderator? At the moment I use a SAK .22 mod. and want to know if I would find much improvement with the Swift and use the SAK on my new .22. Thats £35 opposed to £130 for a Swift.
  22. Went to my RFD yesterday and handled a few (including a Heckler& Koch). I've just about settled on a new Ruger 10/22 stainless with synthetic stock. The new model seems much improved over my previous ancient one. It's to be used solely for night shooting and the flush fitting 10 shot magazine is a big plus - also the price is excellent ! The trigger was not at all bad. I'll try the factory barrel for accuracy and see what transpires, can always upgrade .
  23. I find my 3-12x50 (Hawke Endurance IR) very good on my hmr. My eyes are not so good these days and the exra magnification ensures feasable head shots on rabbits at 100 yards. Around the £300 mark though.
  24. I'm planning on getting another rifle for use with night vision (trying a Pitch Black unit) for rabbits. I would favour a semi, mainly so my field of vision does not move when I cycle the bolt. Any thoughts on the best to buy at the moment? I've had a Rugger 10/22 in the past but not very accurate, mind you it was pretty old. Choices could be: newer Rugger 10/22, maybe with some add-ons. Remington 597 Webly & Scott A-22 Anshutz (heard they are nowhere as good as the bolt actions). Anyone using any your thoughts would be appreciated.
