Mine's just over 14" and there are a few tight spots she struggles to get into, though having said that if she knows something's in there she'll find a way in somehow. But I like the fact she's got a bit of leg as she can cover the ground faster.

Sorry to hear that. It's a real bitch when stuff like that happens, especially with a youngster that you're just getting started. Been there myself so know how it feels. Unfortunately running dogs can take some bad knocks and it's a risk we all take.

Either will do the job. It's a sweeping generalisation but hobs will often work more slowly and methodically than jills. They seem to have more staying power too. Being bigger as a rule they find it harder to pass through nets without making a right mess - especially if wearing a collar. Also their bigger size can make them better at killing below ground. But as I said, that's a real generalisation. I've had hobs that worked really fast and hardly ever killed, and I've also had jills that worked very thoroughly and were expert at killing below ground. Personally I like to have a mix of both th

My first lurcher wasn't into his food at all and would sometimes go 2 or even 3 days without eating. Used to worry me like hell, but eventually I realised he wasn't about to drop dead and would eat when hungry. Easy for me to say, but I wouldn't get too hung up about it if I was you. Though I must admit at only 41/2 months he's still got a lot of growing to do so it's far from ideal. If he'll eat something one day but not the next you could try giving plenty of variety so you're never offering the same thing 2 days running. If you can get hold of it try green tripe. Smells disgusting, but most

For Sale Large - But Old - Two Tier Ferret Hutch, £10

That was what I'd originally been going to do but thought I'd stick it up here first in case anybody wants it as it's still perfectly useable. -
For Sale Large - But Old - Two Tier Ferret Hutch, £10
krawnden posted a topic in Ferreting Equipment
I made this out of an old double wardrobe - turned it on its side and put a 'floor' in the middle to make it 2 tier and cut out some doors. It's 68" long, 36" high, 22.5" deep and heavy as hell. It's not suitable to keep outside as parts of it are made of chipboard, but if you keep it in some sort of weatherproof shelter it's fine. I made it about 15 years ago and it's been in constant use ever since. It's not pretty and it's getting a bit beaten up, but if you treat it carefully it's still got plenty of life left in it. Only getting rid of it as I've made a much bigger new cage and could -

Any pics of Taffey, the sire? How's he bred?

Tell you what, ive spoken to the sales rep alot before i bought my two and she emailed after that to see how i am getting on with them. Let stabba get and try his one and give his opinion on them. After that if there is still a bit of interest in them i will try get a deal on say 25 or 30 of them together and see what prices i get back if ye are interested, Great idea. Subject to hearing what stabba has to say, count me in on this. I still use a lead acid battery but I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for lugging that about. Had intended to buy myself a lithium battery, but having rea

If you can turn it on the ferret's neck but not pull it off it's just right. Don't have it so tight that you can't turn it.

Thanks for sharing this fox digger - it looks great. If you set it at the light intensity setting of your choice does it automatically come back on at that same setting after you've turned it off? Or do you have to cycle through each setting to get back to the one you want?

Puppies tend to follow the lead of older dogs so they pick up bad habits that way as well as good ones.

It's great to get them out when they're young. None of my relatives were into any type of fieldsports so as a youngster it was really hard for me to break into it. Wish I'd had someone who could have taken me out but at least I've been able to do it with my daughters. My youngest comes lamping, ferreting and fishing with me - can't beat it. She caught a 2lb rainbow trout on the fly in the summer and the look on her face will stay with me the rest of my life.

I never bother about the leaves - takes time and makes too much noise.

Hancock breeds plenty of litters so if it's just the fact that the pups he's got at the moment are too old for you, you won't have to wait long before some more come along. Tell him what you're after, and what age you want, and ask him to let you know when he has something. Or else ask him what litters are due and work out when they'll be at the right age for you. He churns out so many that I doubt you'll have to wait more than a few months for the right pup.

My neighbour's back door is a stable door and he often leaves the top half open. Between our two back gardens is a 5 bar gate. One warm Sunday morning my dogs were outside and, unbeknown to me, the lurcher jumped the gate into his garden then jumped the stable door into his kitchen and nicked and ate a joint of beef that was on the side ready to go in the oven. Then for good measure he chased their cat upstairs. Not surprisingly the neighbour was a tad p**sed off. I grovelled and gave him a really good bottle of red wine as an apology. (Shame he was unable to drink it with a nice pink bit of b

I can imagine gwp crosses being really useful. The real Deutsch Drahthaars in Germany are serious dogs that are expected to dispatch fox, wounded deer, trail blood etc all in adddition to the more typical hpr gundog work. Some of this type of blood in a lurcher can do nothing but good I would imagine.

I had a 27" bitch - absolutely awesome to watch her running down her quarry. Unfortunately the ground round my way is pretty rough and she was way too fast for her own good and took some nasty injuries. Didn't get her till 18 months old though, and as been said previously if I'd had her from a pup she might have grown up a bit wiser to the lie of the land and more cautious (though to be honest I doubt it). Fantastic temperament, very laid back, very quiet in the house, very biddable and a lovely dog. But I'd never have another one unless I was only ever going to run her on bowling greens
